Broncos Release Al Wilson

I know he's a middle linebacker, I wonder how he'd play on the outside? Why would the Broncos release a 1st round pick, 4 time pro-bowler? I know he was due some money, but so what? He's only 29 and he's a team leader and a monster on the field. And since he's a free agent now, we wouldn't have to give up anything to get him. Granted we did just give a MLB a $25M contract, but it's intriguing nonetheless....

Here's a link to a press release:

Steady.... Let's just stay put on this one.... I mean... Do we have to jump at everything that is released?

I guess his injury last year was more serious than initially expected.

Remind that if Wilson passed physicals would be a Giant right now...

Nooooo, nor was I suggesting we go get him. But this is a significant thing, because Al Wilson is one of the best LBs in football. And since this is a Redskins fan forum, and since the Redskins have been actively pursuing LBs (Briggs, Fletcher, etc), it's worth mentioning.

He clearly can't play.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

comin off a neck injury, maybe he's not recovering at a pace they're comfortable with considering his salary.

The good thing is that we didn't just bite on the trade offer earlier , although it sounded pretty good.

I don't like the idea of signing him overall, but if he would play backup mlb for vet. min it might be a great pickup. It wouldn't matter that he'd need time to learn the d & get healthy since LF would be starting. The reason I don't like the idea of signing him overall is simply roster space & chemistry would be impacted. We've gained some stability this year, let's not screw w/it.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Nothing too serious....just a NECK injury that caused him to fail a Giants physical. Note to self...don't sign LBs with neck injuries who could be paralyzed at any moment.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

I hope everyone doesn't think that by me posting this thread I was suggesting we go sign the guy. I just thought it was interesting, especially since he was one of the names being discussed in that old Bly trade thing.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Might be worth it if he excepts less money or a back ended-non guarunteed contract to ensure he overcomes his injury. He was one of the better LB's.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

It's definately worth a thread. Wilson is a pretty significant player, even if his neck injury may ultimately end his career.

I would not be surprised in the least bit though.... if he visites Redskins Park this weekend. Just throwing it out there... We love free agents. Our Redskin staff can not get enough of them... They have absolutely no confidence in the draft. None what so ever!

yeah, forgot about the failed physical. Good note to self!

If we sign him, would he get to wear #56 like he did in denver, or has the Danny already made plans to retire that no. & hang it from the rafters of Fedex?

FRPLG 04-13-2007 04:36 PM

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Well if we gave him 56 then he'd be doomed to be moody, injury prone and ineffective. But he'd be a leader!

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Well, he is a linebacker -- for that reason alone, I'll bet this front office has their eyes focused on him.

Gregg Williams could always institute a 2-5-4 defensive set this year, you never know. Maybe they figure if there are enough linebackers on the field it should help stop the run at some point.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Al Wilson may not play this year according to NFL Sirius Radio. So I think we should let this one slide and let the Giants sign another beat up linebacker to eat cap space, while riding the pine.

really, is his health that bad?

feel sorry for him, he was a beast. what a fast decline. but if it was the neck injury that makes sense.
espn only mentioned a back injury

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Unfortunately due to injury, Al Wilson has as much chance to be successful as a one legged man in an ass kickin' contest! We should pass.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

Those bastards at Denver tried to give him to us in order to get our 6th. They've been trying to unload him all offseason, any buisness with the Broncos seems like bad buisness...

they offered their 1st & 3rd, maybe their 2nd. Not a bad deal if we got picks 1-3, but as I recall reports on that deal were unclear as to whether we got 2 or 3 picks.

too bad for Wilson. when healthy, a top 5 linebacker. his career is probably over

well at least it shows us that the skins people did their homework on mr. wilson and that they're capable of showing some restraint.
overall good job by the skins front office. they're always getting bashed on the choices they make. they should be commended on this one.

He used to be one of the better LB's in football, no longer. I have a feeling his career is over.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

I did not realize his neck was hurt that bad. But he did fail the Giants physical so there must still be something wrong with him.. But if he is healthy I would rather have Wilson that Fletcher.

Re: Broncos Release Al Wilson

IF he signed an incentive laden deal he'd play harder and would be a solid back up. Highly doubt that he will sign with the skins. I would think someone like Houston, Oakland, Clevland, Atlanta would be good fits. Someone will give him a huge contract that he isn't worth.

i thinks he told the giants he was still havein problems cause wanted to stay a bronco.we dont need him unless we move him outside.
