Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I will probably be ridiculed for this statement,I love Riggins as much as the next guy,but i just finished watching sb17 over again and in my opinion theisman should have been the mvp.Riggins was pretty pedestrian up to the point he ran for that dramatic td,29 carries for 101 yds,3.4 avg, mostly blocking got him those yds, theisman on the other hand looked great,he was 8-10 on his first 10 attpts, should have been 9-10 if not a great play by a miami defender, and his scrambling kept a few drives alive. His play where the ball was tipped at the line and he knocked it out of bokampers hands to prevent a sure td was pure hustle and saved us the game.Another thing overlooked that I didnt remember,on our final td drive, riggins fumbles at about the 10 yrd line and a miami player picks it up and is running for a sure td but theisman tackles him,the play was not ruled a fumble because the refs said riggins knee was down, and theisman then throws the final td to downtown charlie brown, had instant replay been available then i believe riggins fumble would have been ruled a fumble, and who knows what would have happenned then, riggins could have turned out to be the goat instead of the hero

Re: Theisman Should Have Been Mvp Of Sb 17
Theismann certainly played a good game with the oppertunities he had, but he just didn't have too much of an overall effect on the game. Riggins ran 15 more times than Theismann passed.
Probably wouldn't have won unless we had both though. |
Re: Theisman Should Have Been Mvp Of Sb 17
That tipped play at the end zone is one of the more underrated plays in Redskins history. It's like when Terry Orr recovered the fumble by Rickey Sanders (I think) on the kickoff return after it was 10-0 in SB XXII. The Broncos recover there and it's a whole other ball game.

if I'm not mistaken, i think that was the only fumble of Rickey Sanders professional career |

I was actually going to say that, but I was thinking more along the lines of most underated play in sb history |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I'm not sure how you can discount one of the most dramatic game changing plays in SB history.
Riggins was clearly the MVP of that game. |

Theismann played solid. He had two picks though. Riggins deserved it. But what I remember about that game was how our defense shut down the Dolphins in the 2nd half. I don't think Miami got a 1st down in the 2nd half. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Ritchie P. does not seem to get enough credit in this town. It all goes to Gibbs becasue he was the HC. But Ritchie was one of the great defensive coordinators in the history of the NFL. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
Can't agree with you there.
38 carries for 166. Both were Superbowl records and Riggins completely dominated the 4th quarter. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
Riggins definitely deserved it, but Theismann was so "aware" in that game. He really did save the game with that tip away from Bokamper. As far as the Terry Orr play against Denver, that was HUGE! Almost as huge as the
3rd down pass to Monk to get the Skins out of their own endzone in the 1st quarter. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I agree the tip that Theismann had was probably the game saver. I'm not taking anything away from it. But Riggins' TD rumble was a huge play as well and really broke the Dolphins' will.

Not sure if anyone remembers but there was a HUGE no call by the refs that day. When Williams twisted his knee, he actually fumbled the ball and Denver recovered it. However the refs blew it dead. If they had called it a fumble which they should have Denver would have had the ball in our territory up 10-0. Not sure if it would have made a difference but the momentum would have really swung in Denver's favor. |

I remember it vividly,it was def a fumble, game could have def turned out different if broncos go up 17-0,or maybe it would have turned out 42-17 lol we def could have scored more points in that game,we took it easy on them in the 2nd half |

Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
riggins won that game for the skins, not joe t.the best play he made the whole game was keeping bokamper from intercepting a batted pass in the 3rd quarter.i love joe t,but riggins deserved the mvp more than he did!

Yeah and the interpretation that the refs had for that call was that Williams was in the act of "giving himself up" and that is why they blew the whistle. I don't care how one slices it, it still was a fumble. |

maybe Riggins did deserve it,like I posted before I think co-mvps would have been great, when was the last time anybody watched this complete game? not highlights, but the whole game,I think if you rewatched you'd have a better appreciation for theismans performance |

Yeah, well said buddy! I think that you are old school like me (DOB 1969). The one thing about Joey T. is that he played with mad heart, and passion. I don't know if any of you guys listen to the John Riggins show or not, but in their top of the hour show intro, when you hear Joey T. yells out, "YELLOW 31, YELLOW 31, HUT 1, HUT 2!" Man, hearing that makes the goose bumps come out. Do any of you guys feel the same way? |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
Joey T is my favorite player ever...but Riggo was the MVP of that game. I will agree that Joe's performance in that game is probably underrated.
Riggo's TD was the greatest single play in Redskins history and it capped one of the greatest overall playoff performances any player ever had. He carried the redskins to the super bowl. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
one single play won riggo mvp. the infamous run and to be honest had that been the only play he made in the game he still gets my vote. but the truth is the skins rode the diesel most of the second half and with the help of that oline with broke the dolphins back just by pounding it out. The oline should have shared that mvp with riggo. hail skins.

Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I see where you're coming from Htown. Theismann takes a hit these days because just about everybody hates him as a broadcaster. Since it's been so long since he played, I think many people, especially the younger Skins fans don't recognize how great a player he really was.
It cannot be overlooked: Theismann was the last great quarterback the Washington Redskins had. There hasn't been anyone in a burgundy and gold uniform to line up at that position that comes close to the talent, leadership, and gamebreaking ability that Theismann had. I also think Riggins deserved the MVP -- but Joey T. was a VERY close second. The 43-yard run in the fourth quarter is on just about every Super Bowl highlight reel. It really is one of the NFL's signature moments. In fact, it might be the most recognizable in Redskin history. If you had to list the most memorable plays with this franchise, I can't think of one that could be ranked above it. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I agree with the sentiment about Joey T. I think he was the last truly great quarterback that the Redskins had. I know people talked about how poor of a season he was having in '86 when he broke his leg. Overall, Theismann was the most consistent quarterback we have had in the last twenty+ years. I thought Mark Rypien was going to be the next Joe Theismann for the Washington Redskins, but it seemed as if had that one really great year, then he started sliding off the page. I was disappointed in that. There are so many ifs that us Redskins fans ponder on. What if Joe had never broken his leg....would he have had another Super Bowl ring? Maybe two more? If Mark Rypien had kept up his play from his Super Bowl year with the Redskins, would Mark have gotten another Super Bowl ring? Not saying that it is always the quarterback that makes or breaks you, but a proven leader can make a difference between winning and losing sometimes.

Yeah, I've often wondered what happened with Mark Rypien. I know in 1992, the whole team was in a funk. Age was starting to show in a lot of the players, and Gibbs himself was exhausted. In 1993 in the opener on Monday night against the Cowboys, it looked like he regained his '91 form -- but then he got injured in the second or third game of the season, and never was quite right after that. I believe that was his final year as a Redskin. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I think Riggins gets it because of the dramatic nature of the run and his overall playoff performace which was unreal.
Having said that, Theismann is underrated. He had great feet and he could be deadly accurate. Also, he played with a chip on his shoulder and he "competed" (Hat-Tip: Norv Turner). If he had played in New York, all those phonies up there would still be licking his balls. |

I think when Rypien got hurt early in 1993 is when Rich Gannon stepped in. Then that following off-season the Redskins drafted some Shuler guy
