Kiper has his flaws as an analyst, but he's very unbiased, puts countless hours into his work, and although his methods are aging and sometimes flawed, his opinions are usually well formulated, well defensed, and generally correct. McShay just strikes me as a lazy scout who believes that he really knows everything about scouting as is. I feel that Kiper will continue to work to improve the way he rates prospects where as McShay will just make excuses for why he can't make accurate projections. |

Re: Who Is The Better Evaluator Of Talent Mcshay Or Kiper Jr.?
As evidence for my prior claim, I present this article:
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft07/insider/columns/story?columnist=mcshay_todd&id=2809454 It seems as if he writes this under the assumption that he couldn't possibly be evalutating receivers improperly, while openly admitting that not even he can notice a difference in the way receivers seperate. He does this because he's completely unwilling to even consider the possibility that maybe, just maybe, seperation isn't the best way to project a receiver. Most scouts like McShay grade receivers under the assumption that the QB is staring each and every one of them down the whole time, every play. In reality, NFL QBs do this approximently never. For sure, how a receiver plays the ball and what he does after the catch are considerably more important than what he does before it. But as long as guys like McShay are grading prospects, you are going to have the best players at the position inexplicibly fall. |

Re: Who Is The Better Evaluator Of Talent Mcshay Or Kiper Jr.?
Kiper places great emphasis on how much the Redskins de-emphasize the draft, an opinion I embrace. However, on draft matters and evaluations, I think the NFL draft is one of the most over-hyped time out's in all of sports.
The most important criteria in determining, and evaluating a player's complete worth cannot be determined by numbers, or combine routines. "It's in my heart" |

Granted....I'll give Kiper the edge when it comes to oral evaluation, at least for what it's worth. |

Re: Who Is The Better Evaluator Of Talent Mcshay Or Kiper Jr.?
These guys are okay but NOBODY can ever predict how prospects will be at the NFL level. Sure they hype up people and they do get drafted high but what about all the hype the media gave guys like Heath Shuler, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, Ki-jana Carter, and all the other guys that are not mentioned. What really makes the draft special is the guys who execute well at the NFL Level, such as Marques Colston, Tom Brady, Matt Hasslebeck, and the Redskins drafted by the Skins in the 80's. Long live Bobby Bethard. So to Mel Kiper and Todd Mcshay just b/c you get a paycheck to analyze some college kid, you still don't know JACK S!@T.

I could have 560 posts in two months if they were all between 1-3 words. Sheesh.
Has anyone heard Scott Van Pelt (ESPN broadcaster, Maryland grad) do his Mel Kiper imitation? It's hilarious! And I think McShay is a hack... |
These guys are okay but NOBODY can ever predict how prospects will be at the NFL level.
I agree with you to an extent JankySpanky, that at a majority of the positions where there is insuffient data to draw any correlations between characteristics of a bust or successful prospect, it takes some amount of good fortune to land the right guy.
I just think that we've been cultured by the "experts" to think the draft is a complete crapshoot when in reality, that's just an excuse for them not doing their jobs. I bet Mel Kiper wouldn't tell you the draft is a crapshoot. |
every year mayock takes someone and falls in love with him. last year it was cutler. this year its c Johnson. he cant hold kipers jock
Additionally, Mike Mayock said that Sean Taylor would be the best prospect to come out of the 2004 draft.
No matter where you stand on Taylor's value to this team, I think we can all agree that he is not the best prospect to come out of the 2004 draft. |
