Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I welcome a LONGER season, hope it happens.

Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I think they should go to 18 and cut out 2 of the meaningless pre-season games.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, I'd love a longer season, but with 16 games how beatup are many teams come playoff time?

I'd venture to guess not significantly more beat up, it's only one game, and they'd be removing one preseason game as it is. Besides, all the teams would be dealing with the same schedule, they'd all be on equal levels when it comes to being beat up. Maybe you think about giving a bye week for all teams to rest up before the playoffs begin? I dunno. Overall it'd be a good move, getting rid of one of the ridiculous preseason games and exchanging it for a game that counts would be win-win in my eyes. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
The league is also talking about playing the Super Bowl overseas and moving the Pro Bowl up to the week before the Super Bowl.
Is Goodell trying too hard to fix a good thing, or does he know something we don't? NFL notes: Goodell says Super Bowl may head overseas - USATODAY.com |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
Super Bowl overseas?!?!?!?!? Honestly, I don't know if I could even TELL YOU how pissed I would be at that.

Agreed. The Superbowl is an American institution. There's no way in hell a bunch of Frenchies or even English soccer hooligans could appreciate it for what it is. And the Pro Bowl before the Superbowl is an interesting idea. More people would watch it, but I bet neither of the Superbowl teams would allow their players to participate. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
Seriously, that would cause a MAJOR outcry over here.
|
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
i dont want them to play any regular season games overseas though
|
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
Teams with depth will benefit from a such a change and teams without it will be hurt. I personally would love to see more football, but I wonder whether our team would be helped or hurt by such a change.

Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I find it hard to believe that the owners would cut even one preseason game.
Correct if I'm wrong, but I believe most teams do not have preseason games included in their season ticket packages. So, teams make a significant amount of revenue from extra ticket sales in addition to the fact that players are not paid for preseason games. I don't know, I might be talking out of my ass right now, but I thought this is why they haven't already cut preseason games. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
Actually, they are included as far as I know.

At least for the SKINS. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I like the idea of a 17 game season but I wonder what the players union would have to say about that. I think they'd want more compensation in the form of more player jobs on each team. The owners might not like it.
As for the Super Bowl overseas. I think it could be ok. As a fan I would much rather travel to Madrid, London or Paris to see the big game than to Detroit, Minneapolis, or Atlanta. All teams include preseason as part of the season tix package. If they didnt they would have a tough time selling them. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
If they expand to 18, cut down two preseason games and then add a second bye week. The second bye week would (a) extend the season longer and (b) give more time for recuperation.

Great plan. When I first saw this thread, I immediately thought "why not 18, a nice even number?" and I guess I'm not the only one. :) |

I could see Snyder standing in front of the other owners using that line and then he would here a loud HA HA HA HA HA. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
What is the point of making the season longer, Im sure the players are against it and so am i. Whats the point of overseas games too, i just dont get it

MONEY and more MONEY |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
i wonder why they came up with a weird # like 17? why not use Matty's plan. i love me some more meaningful football. and the super bowl is usually just a big corporate event, so why not?

That would be the perfect plan. Players probably like it though. |

That's the number of dogs found a Vicks home the day the NFL was discussing extending the season. |

More football= More money! Why in the world would you be against a longer season? I don't know one sole..well except you....that wouldn't want more football? I would can the overseas crap! The NFL would be like everything else in this country! You wanna see the NFL come to the GOOD OLE USA and BRING YOUR WALLET! Or stay home. |

If that was the case we would be havin a 90 game schedule......turn us into baseball. I'm all for it....lol |

I agree. Going to 17 is stupid. It went from 14 to 16...so it's natural to move up to 18. The football season is too short anyway, and the preseason is too long. |

Why would the players want to play an additional 2 games for the same pay? Whoever said the union would object is correct. Ever game is like a car wreck. Would you like to be in two additional car wrecks a year? There is no way they go to 18 games and then have a full set of playoff games. Also, I think they have to consider the possibility of watering down the product. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I love how Godell says "adding a 17th game will create more inventory, and that has some appeal. The issue is, how do you create more inventory?" Nice. Pretty much saying we'll do whatever rakes in the cash. "Inventory." HA!
That being said I'm all about more football. Players won't like it though. |

I think players will like it for two reasons, if they can drop 2 preseason games for two regular season games, they'd go for it. Also, adding two games means records previously untouchable, would be MUCH easier to beat. What record would be safe with two more regular season games???? |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
While I like the idea of getting rid of preseason games in favor of real games, that fact that the NFL wants to play the extra game outside of this country doesn't make me happy. The NFL schedule is already hard to make fair as it is. with Thursday games and short weeks. Imagine having to play a game after having played the previous week in London or Spain. Or needing a win to make the playoffs and having it in Germany or Japan. Any one here ever had that kind of jet lag? What time would these games be? A game in Tokyo started at 1 Pm EST would be 2 AM. You think anyone is going to that game? As much as we love the NFL here in the USA, it has not caught on elsewhere. So be it. Forcing it down the throats of other countries isn't going to help. I think the NFL will be fine if they leave Europe and Asia to MLB and the NBA.
As much as we love the NFL here in the USA, it has not caught on elsewhere.
I beg to differ - within 72 hours of registration being open for this London NFL game there were over half a million ticket requests, not to mention how many were requested after that point. Demand has been so high that the NFL are now going to have a "lottery" to determine who can get first option on buying tickets (I personally was registered within the first 10 mins of registration opening). I know many in the US are keen to protect what they feel is theirs (and we have discussed this a fair few times in other threads), but the NFL is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more popular than many US residents would think. Whilst I think this London game is good for the NFL to expand its potential revenue base, I too agree that a full week of "worldwide" games wouldn't work at this point - they should continue to do the 1-2 overseas games that they have agreed to for the next 5 years and work from there. 17 week season, no thanks, as has been mentioned earlier 18 is a much better number - BUT with an 18 game season all of a sudden records that have stood for a long time become easier to reach, etc. I also agree that the SB should not leave the US, for Goodell to even mention it means he must be smoking something. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
Just raise the salary cap by a % equal to the increased number of games to appease the players that feel they should not play more games for the same pay; or get rid of the salary cap, which I am all for.
Also, I say get rid of all pre-season games and got to a 20 game schedule divided up into two 10 game sessions. Each 10 game session would have a Bye week and there would be an additional Bye week in between, sort of like an All-Star break without the All-Star game. That gives us 23 weeks of NFL not including playoffs. |

It only makes good sense to drop whatever you add to the regular season. I hope they drop one or two of these pointless games! |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I really hope this happens, we need more football.

Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
The nfl is gonna screw itself if it tries to fix what isn't broken. The league is at its greatest success, don't screw w/it.
As it is now, the 16 game schedule has usually resulted in a good no. of meaningless games at the end of the season. There is parity right now, but the longer the season the harder it is to catch up in the standings. That's why we have so many playoff teams playing their 2nd stringers in games 15 & 16. 16 games is a lot, 17 or 18 is really a lot. Preseason games are not for starters as much as guys trying to make teams. If they cut out preseason games, teams will just have scrimmages against one another & there will still be the chance of injury. |
Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!
I like the idea, just not so sure how much the players are going to like it. It will be interesting to hear their take on this.

Following an expansion of the regular season from 14 to 16 games in the 1978 season it never hurt a thing. It just increased popularity and ratings for the NFL. This is what they are trying to do once again. With a kicker, pick up on the Out of Country cash flow, we reap the bennies also. For what logical reason do you think it would do harm? |
