ESPN vs NFL Network Draft Coverage
 

Alright given that one of the few things going right in my middle of nowhere town is that our local cable gives us NFL Network I was able to have a say in where I got my draft coverage. With that said I honestly believe that ESPN is doing a horrible job covering the draft. Heres what I've noticed after 9 1/2 hours of draft coverage.

- Mel Kiper has done a good job giving a rundown of picks after they're selected.

- Chris Berman wasn't as annoying as a lot of people on this forum claimed he was (with all the Landry in Washington jokes, and the go home early on which he had a valid point), but he wasn't exactly drawing me back to ESPN.

- The analyst for ESPN must be on coke or something because it seems like every 5 minutes someones getting their panties up in a bunch. I mean its alright to go on a 1 or 2 minute tangent to bust on a team for making a bad pick but these guys are making the whole draft a display of how egomanical they are.

- MeShawn Johnson is responsible for starting a lot of the shit. Don't be surprised if this is the end of his broadcasting career. Hell at least Michael Irvin was light hearted when he got mad, MeShawn's just annoying.

- I love Tony K, but my friend was right, he really should just stick to PTI. Think about it, the world of comedy is like baseball, if you hit 3 for 10 you're doing good. Tonys going about 1 for 15 these days when under the MNF banner.

- NFL Network on the other hand has done a much better job covering the draft. The analyst are a lot more light hearted and objective, not to mention that they get a lot of news in before ESPN.

- The only knock I have on NFL network is they need more of an elaborate display a la ESPN, in fact the only reason I kept tuning into ESPN during the draft was becasue of the fact that ESPN had more information on screen readily available.

- To everyone who will be watching the 2nd day of the draft and the rest of the first day I highly recomend tuning into NFL Network if the option is available to you. Personally I'd like to get a feel for what you guys thought of the draft coverage. Other than that I apologize for acting like the analyst that I have criticized in this very thread.__

I was use to the visuals on ESPN and Kiper but, I like the "needs" bubbles NFL network had for each team. Some of the highlights on NFL network were better (more) too. And of course you have TeamCam. Mayock wasn't bad and NFL network was getting info about who was on the phones with who before picks and trades were made. I can't decide.

i am watching the NFL network online since i am overseas. The ESPN draft coverage was on earlier but the NBA playoffs started. So i looked on NFL.com and found that they have the draft coverage available, for free. NFL network coverage seems to have more information and isnt repeatative like ESPN. Watching Berman and Kiper gets boring after a while because it seems like they say the same thing about every pick.....

Damn, I didn't know it was available on NFL Network. I was listening to the awful radio coverage with Colin Cowherd.

I really did prefer the NFL if only because it seemed like Schefter knew exactly what was going on every moment.

A dead bird on a stick is better than Irvin. Don't care for Keyshawn, but still better than Irvin. (btw, Keyshawn still plays, so we don't need to worry about him being an analyst for at least another year.

I love Tony on PTI, but wow, I find him amazingly annoying any other place I see him.

I just like the fact that there was a second channel to turn to when a commercial came on.

I like how ESPN had different groups of analysts to talk to, Wingo, Mark May, Jaws, Kornheiser... I also like Chris Mortensen -- he's one of the best.

But it seemed like NFL Network had more scoops from the teams as to what they were going to do.

For me, they both supplied adequate coverage.

ESPN is second to none. and as much as i hate to say it, keyshawn was very good. especially when the panthers were up, and he said they would probably go wide out, to start phasing him out

Personally I like Kiper, so I lean to ESPN and I switch to NFLN when ESPN is on commercial.

ESPN does a much better job covering the draft. They have been doing it for years so its smoother. Also cut away to NFL Live which mixes it up.

NFL Network is great during the season but ESPN has the draft locked up for now.

NFL network has one of the smoothest new analyst that i enjoy listening to. Charles Davis teams up well with Mike Mayock who really seems to know players because he was at the Senior Bowl, combine, and everything else and it doesn't feel like he had to cram to learn everything. I agree with the statement that ESPN had a better looking set though. Im also glad i was able to change channels during commericals. Steve Young and Keyshwawn Johnson, and the dude with the glasses are waay to annoying. Next year NFL network will get the top vote this year is ESPN though for quality and having Kiper at the top of his game

I think both had adequate coverage. Kiper and Mayock are a wash for the most part although I get the feeling that Mayock is bs-ing a lot of the time. For me, Chris Berman's monkey shines are starting to wear a little thin. Rich Eisen is much easier to take in eight hour doses.

Kornheiser may has well have been getting coffee for all the insight he added.

One thing ESPN messed up on was the ability to not understand if a player didnt get the "call" he wasnt gonna be drafted.

They were so sure Quinn was going to the Fins that they had Suzie talk to Quinn less than 5 mins before the Fins had to pick. I think Quinn realized by that point he wasnt going, but he spoke well about Miami. Also after that they had a freaking camera on him the whole time. Someone should have realized he wasnt getting picked, but they were all shocked and zoomed into Brady's reaction, which wasnt really too surprised.

Stupid on ESPNs part. I will be watching NFLN next year.

I thought Keyshawn was good as well. I thought he was objective, well spoken, and appeared to have done some homework on the picks.

My problem with Keyshawn was that he seemed to put being right in front of everything else. Personally I hate people like that, theres a difference between being objective and yelling louder then everyone else so people percieve that you're winning a debate.

I felt like he started out all right but after a while you can just see he was pissed off that everyone wasn't worshiping the ground he walked on. I was also surprised that Jaws spent most of his time in arguments that added nothing to the draft coverage. That disapointed me to because I feel that Jaws is one of the best analyst out there right now.

Mayock also annoyed me when he got into a pissing match with Adam Schafter over the Randy Moss story, claiming that we should pay more attention to the 5th and 6th round picks. Come on Mike, everyone isn't a football junkie, to keep people around on the second day you have to keep them hooked and the Randy Moss story did just that.

In conclusion I say that we move Mel Kiper to NFL Network and Mike Mayock to ESPN. I think someone else pointed out on this thread that Rich Eison is a lot easier to take then Chris Berman, which in my opinion is right on the money.

ESPN's Quinn and Moss coverage was simply over the top and unbearable

I personally hate how Berman tries to sound smart by 'predicting' the pick right as the commissioner goes the podium.

I can't stand him anymore. I think I'm making the switch to NFL network this year.

The whole thing is over kill in my opinion. It's just drama. Who cares if Brady Quinn's girl is with him on draft and what she has on? It's just turned into a big production. That being said, I'm glad the NFL has decided to shorten the time between rounds and only televise the first two.

rounds 3-7 are televised on ESPN and NFL Network on Sunday from 10am-7pm

I could not stand the Def Poetry Jam they did on NFL Network for the draft last year though. Whenever they showed that or went to a commercial, I went right over to ESPN.

Since last year he has begun to grow on me. I think that it all started when he and Adam Schefter got into that heated discussion over Randy Moss at last years draft.

I like ESPN's coverage solely because they have Mel Kiper. His conviction and passion when he provides player analysis is very infectious. Mel might not always be right, but he certainly appears to believe that he is. Lastly, kudos to any guy who can make a career out of focusing on this one day each year.

Mel Kiper is like some sort of Rain Man. It's amazing how he takes no notes.

What's really crazy is when he talks about other sports. He's actually pretty knowledgable in several sports.

Ive had enough draft coverage from espn already and the draft hasn't even started yet... an hr and a half special mock draft, give me a break. Id rather see some coverage on the nba playoffs, nascar, baseball, ect. Sorry if that offends you die hard football fans, but I'm a sports fan, not just a football fan.

I like watching NFLN for the draft, just because I don't like ESPN's analysts, although I don't like Mike Mayock either, he always sounds like he thinks his opinion is always the best lol. The good thing about having two versions of the draft though is that when one hits commercial I can just switch back to the other.

Anyway I'm going to have NFL Network streaming this time around since I'll be home for the weekend and our Comcast package doesn't include NFL Network. Honestly though, ESPN's Todd McShay vs Mel Kiper dynamic is getting pretty annoying, they always seem to be ragging on each other in the same manner that Clayton and Salsbury use to.

Plus NFL Network is probably going to have Casserly and Mayock covering the draft this week which is great because Charlie does a good job in my opinion of providing information, weather it be on the mindset of a GM/Scout or analysis of a particular player, even though he seems to constantly butcher names. I mean hell, the other day Casserly listed the Cowboys Wide Outs as TO, Crayton, and Joey Galloway. However other then slip ups like that, he's been pretty good.

I also like Mayock better then Kiper, and how can you not like Rich Eisen?

There's one pretty big difference between Clayton/Salisbury and Kiper/McShay
