Let's Go To The Landrymat!!!!!!!
I first would like so say that I'd hate to be a receiver running through the middle of the Redskins secondary next year. I think we're going to see a lot of alligator arms for years to come, with Taylor and Landry routinely punishing opposing players.
LaRon's brother, Dawan Landry plays safety for the Ravens. He was a rookie last year and was taken in the 5th round out of Georgia Tech. My Ravens fans friends told me he was an absolute beast. He had good numbers his rookie year. NFL.com - Dawan Landry LaRon was more highly saught after, so I'm hopin he'll have an even stronger impact than his brother did last year. I also hope that we don't have to watch Pierson Prileau start for the first half of the season. Is anyone else gonna be pissed if Landry has to sit on the bench like Rocky did last year? Also, I've seen a few people gripe about how we did not get any help at d-line. I'm going to look at this as a positive, actually. To me, this means that Gibbs/Williams/Vinny/Snyder must have faith that Montgomery and Golston are going to turn out to be solid players. Plus, if Griff can stay healthy and Carter plays the whole season like he did at the end of last year, out D-line may not be as bad as everyone thinks it's going to be. Hopefully, I'm right. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Absolutely. With a heavy rotation the DL we have can be good late in games. Of course, we need a lead then not trying to play catch up.
|
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
with this better secondary we can blitz more and leave corners on an island which can help our defense a lot

I say we go after Cory Redding.

I'm pretty sure we will. I just don't know where and who to start my rumor mill with. |

Plus it gives a tremendous amount of flexibility that the Skins did not have last year. Like if (or when) Springs gets hurt you could move Smoot in at corner, you have David Macklin at nickel and Pierson could also play in the nickel (as he did some in 2005). I guess they are looking to rush Marcus more from what Gibbs said at his presser and we'll hope they can generate some pass rush with LB's and DB's coming. I guess you can look at it as they did not have any real pass rushers in 2005 and the defense played well. At #6 I think Landry was the right pick. Would have been nice to move down a bit and get Okoye, but from how everything played out it is pretty obvious that no one wanted to move up. Landry is far superior to Okoye at this point and much more deserving of that high a pick. |

What's been happening is that every year we don't address it, our defensive hole grows exponentially. On top of pushing back the start of a neccessary development process for the DL--thus delaying the rebuilding of our front 7, we also are doing two things with the current players: #1) Waiting too long to get potential replacements on the roster for guys like Griffin, Daniels, Wynn, etc. It forces a necessary extention of their careers and a poor allocation of financial resources. #2) Waiting while the window of oppertunity closes for guys like Springs, Washington, Fletcher, and Marshall, thus inherently giving us extra needs to fill when we need to be taking DLineman. Landry does not help anyone get better on the defense. Landry is simply a good to great safety. But we had too many holes. We are building this thing backwards, and its going to cost us a lot financially against the cap, and the window of oppertunity is going to start much later now, and end about the same time. Less oppertunities to win it all. Additionally, what happens next year if theres another prospect thats too good to pass up in round 1? We can't take him, because we pushed fixing the DL back another season. That's why we needed to go with Okoye such and such now, so that we could have grabbed the best available guy next year. Now we back ourselves into a corner for next draft, and every year we continue to ignore the DL, the defensive "hole" we are in will worsen exponentially. |

Judging from this and previous posts that you have made I have to ask, do you understand that every team in the NFL play's with 2 safeties? You seem to think all you need is 1. If Landry is everything as billed, he will immediatly provide help for Taylor and allow him more freedom in the secondary, he will then provide single coverage on any TE in the league, as well the ability to man up on just about every WR and RB, something AA couldn't remotly do last season, he then will privide a big help to our CB's with his abilty to eat up ground when the ball is in the air, he will also allow for more corner blitzes knowing both our safeties can cover just about any WR in the league. I wont mention the dropped balls in the middle of the field because WR know that no matter who hit's them when the go across they are going to be knocked silly. How's that for starters? As for your DL, what happens if the players you wanted are just average players on the NFL level? What happens if you address the pass rush [you know like we did last year] and we get a player or 2 who are average where are we then? Without a safety and yet still a need for a pass rusher. untill we address the fact that Carter can't play the run teams will exploit that, just like the AA, why attack strengths in a defense when you can continually attack the weak spot. I didn't see anything spectacular coming out on the D-line, Landry could be a top safety, I would be surprised if we say that about any of these DL. |

I've conceded that reed is better than taylor overall at this point in time but they've conceded that sean taylor is more intimidating hitter. Those raven fans are really up on dawan though. I can't wait to see sean taylor and dawan just kill someone out there. I have always wanted a big hitter with taylor. Everyone was happy with arch taking that spot. I remember someone was selling a t-shirt called bash bros with the numbers 21 and 40 on it. Laron is going to be able to plug up the run when needed and catch up to anyone on the field. I hope that taylor and him make each other better. All indications are that laron is a quick learner so lets hope he can pick up the system fast. Playing all 4 years at LSU is not an easy thing and having experience at both CB and Safety just builds on his experience. Laron could have easily been drafted last year but decided to stay in school. They say his real problems are going for a big hit over a sure tackle and his hands. His catching ability can't be worse than carlos's though. I want to go back to the 2004-05 D with blitzes from everywhere. We never really did have a good d-line and we still were successful. Now we have a super fast and strong backfield and can easily afford to send a blitzer from the secondary and still have coverage back there. It will be mayhem. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
GTripp, I think point #2 is right on -- and you just know that next year, when Shawn Springs finally peters out, the priority from this front office will be to draft another cornerback before they address the D-line.
The writing is on the wall with these guys. |

His condition was never one that should have been relied on as a long term starter. Remember, they signed Brandon Noble and were prepared to ride him out as the #2. Salave'a's days of being a durable, 16-game starter are long over. And you're right -- injuries did play a role with the D-line. Salave'a and Griffin were playing banged up practically all season, and the results were obvious. All the more reason to find guys who can play as opposed to milking older players until they're completely squeezed dry. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Going in to Gibbs first year back, I recall everyone thinking that the Dline would be a weakness. That D was top 10. My hope is that Williams and Blache can make chicken salad out of chicken s*** here--they've done it before. And no doubt GWs defense mus have good safety play, so LaRon could have a big impact right away.
My guess is that we go with a big FA on the line next season, to avoid the development issue. And we draft some depth (because with any luck, we'll have a few more day-one picks). |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
I don't think we're done with the defensive line. The WP indicates they may seek a trade for a veteran, and there's always the June 1 cuts coming up.

Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
I will say this, you know how so many offenses tend not to throw near Champ Bailey? They're doing the same thing with Sean Taylor, though to a lesser degree.
Putting LaRon Landry back there, which side of the field are you going to avoid now? Both safeties close really quickly and have incredible range. So yes, I do think LaRon Landry will make other players better, namely Sean Taylor. More balls are going to come Taylor's way, we can probably expect more INTs, which we SORELY need. So that's a plus. I do wish we addressed DT though. I'm comfortable with Andre Carter providing the pass rush, as we've said on this site, he came on last year and looked good. But DT, I'm not so sure. Gibbs and Williams are putting a lot of their eggs in the development of Golston and Montgomery at this point. Maybe they can be solid, but they got killed against the run last year. Maybe Fletcher can be like Pierce, and get the line in the right position before the snap. And maybe Salave'a will be over his plantar fasciatis problems and return to being a decent run stuffer. But man, there are a lot of maybes in that last paragraph. I don't see a way we can stop guys like Philly's Shawn Andrews from opening massive holes against us. I think we're very vulnerable up the gut to the run. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
What I want to see from Landry & Taylor is the ability to force teams to alter their short yardage game. In the past we were not able to play more than 7 or so players in the box, obviously to protect against the TE option or the deep PA pass.
Now with one of the best projected pass covering safeties I hope teams respect us on 4th down and 1 & punt the damn ball or they will pay dearly! Overall, I was pleased with the picks that were made. However, I don't think I would have selected a QB, instead I would have looked at o-line depth. Should be interesting to see how this team shapes up in Camp in 2 months. Campbell better be ready or we're still going backwards....... |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Correct me if im wrong, but what makes Williams D unique is that he builds the D from the outside in rather then the inside out. He believes that blitzing and misdirection is the best way to create presure, and as we all know because of injuries to our secondary last year AND because of how bad AA was in pass coverage, we couldnt blitz as much cause we had to keep everyone in pass coverage therefore we could not get preasure on the passer. Now with the depth in the secondary, we will be able to send more guys in which will create more ints for rogers to drop and big play opprotunites for playmakers like taylor, washington, and hopefully landry to capitalize on. I believe that we will be back in the top 10 in D.

You are correct sir. GW's D works from the outside in. He's always brought pressure with corners, safeties and linebackers. Injuries were definitely a factor in what hand-cuffed what he could do last year scheme-wise. |

No matter how Williams' scheme works, you can't have bozos at the D-line.

Yes this is all true, but the #1 premise of GW's system is stopping the run on 1st down so that the offense has to deal with 2nd and longs and then 3rd and longs. Then and only then can you feel comfortable bringing the noise with the exotic blitzes. He doesn't bring that ruckus on 2nd and 3. He had a choice to make; rely on Prioleau, Springs, Fox, and Stoutmire to provide the coverage necessary to bring pressure from other places; or rely on the injury prone Joe Salave'a, undersized Kedric Golston, and the raw Anthony Montgomery to stop the run next to Griffin. He chose to shore up the secondary. There were two problems on defense, and only one could be solved by picking at 6. Trading down to address both problems would have been much better; but since that wasn't possible, I can't really express a beef on Landry because he'll solve one of the problems. It's just I still think we're vulnerable to the run and won't be any better than middle of the pack on D this year because of it. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Of course, middle of the pack on D, combined with the offense we have, may be good enough to make the playoffs.
As we all know in our heart of hearts, our hopes ride on Jason Campbell. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
I think Fletcher is going to make more of a difference in the middle than people think.
|
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
It will all depend on how our current group at DL performs. If they can regroup and recapture some of the magic from 2005 we'll be ok. If they pick up where they left off last year or worse, of course we're in trouble.
Gibbs seems to think most of the defensive problems stemmed from coverage issues last year, so we'll see who was right by year's end. Personally I don't see the cupboard being as bare along the d-line as some people seem to think. |

I don't think the Dline is solely repsonsible for the breakdown in '06, nor are we in need of a major overhaul. I think the additions of Landry, Fletch, and the rest of the gang flat out tackling, like football players are supposed to, will go a long ways in helping us getting back to that '04 form. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Personnel wise, our defensive line as it stands now is hardly any different from the line we had in '04 when we ranked 3rd overall on defense. The difference maker was Antonio Pierce.
I agree with TMC, London Fletcher should make a large impact on the team. He's a strong tackler himself, but his true value comes in the ability to get guys lined up in GW's defense a la Antonio Pierce. Fletcher could get the line back to form. Also, Gibbs' more relaxed style this offseason on workouts will hopefully keep the players fresher and injury free. These are all reasonable points, they all happen to be optimistic. I'm hopeful they pan out. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Landry is a good pick for one of the holes we needed to fill and I am not worried as much that the D-line wont get sacks like last year. What absolutely scares me is that teams ran all over us last year and that was our biggest problem on defense. We haven't done much to try to fix that problem by getting run stoppers on the D-line. Salavea may still have a good year left in him and Montgomery might step it up but its a risky gamble to trust that. Also Fletcher is a tackling machine and should help out with the run to some extent but if teams run off tackle we could have a tough time trying to stop them. All i'm saying is that we are a run first on O, stop the run on D kind of football team and we didn't focus in on that gameplan with the way we drafted this year. I am hoping that we can pick someone up to help us out but if not I am keeping my fingers crossed that everyone can outperform their expectations.
|
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
I dunno about fletcher to be honest. I hope he still has something left in the tank. But, with an old crappy D-line, these old LB's might suffer. We really needed Okoye in my opinion, young, big and fast, woulda helped fletcher a lot

Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Why would we have problems providing Washington is healthy? He is a past Pro Bowler and arguably our best defensive player. Marshall is moving back to his natural weakside position. Our LB corps will be a strength, not a liability.
|
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Although I would have loved to have gotten another D-lineman, IF Griffin can stay healthy and Carter performs like he did towards the end of last season, our defense will be fine. The improved secondary will certainly help. I guess only time will tell.

that's the question; is he/will he be healthy? Same w/Rocky. The weekend's wash post articles seemed to throw it out there that both might not be ready. That makes sense of the LB selections. i guess the coaches felt that there was less depth at LB than d line. On this thread everyone seems to categorize our d problems as d line or secondary. The LB corps had a lot to do w/our horrible 06 as well. I"m really concerned about Washington and Rocky though, we need both to play big for us. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
According to what I've read from most reports, Rocky's surgeries were very minor. In addition to that, I would be willing to bet that Marshall is slated to start (at least in the beginning) on the weak side. My MAIN concern is Washington. He played hurt most of the year, and he could either play at his same level at 2006, which seemed decent to me, OR he's going to be better and improved.

Offiss, safeties are the last line of defense. The reason that they don't make anyone else look better is that everything they do on a football field is dependant on what the entire offense does, and what the other 9 players on defense have done. If the offense runs on you, the most successful defensive outcome is one where the safeties aren't involved. If we were constructing the defense the "right" way (and I quote myself because right is just my perception of the correct way to build a defense), we couldn't justify taking two safeties in the top 6 in a span of 4 years. Those are picks that could have been used in more impact defensive positions. We don't have a single impact defensive lineman. Most decent teams have at least one. Heck, the Raiders have two! So while I don't think we will be regretting this pick down the road at all, because we ignored the DL again this year, we will continue to regret previous picks like Rocky, Rogers, and even ST. I can't see our defense improving all that much this year, although I expect the LBs to play much better on the whole. Our DL will just be last years DL, aged one year. That's what I mean when I say the problem will worsen exponentially. |
Even though he build the D from the outside in, all defenses are reliant on a strong DL to be successful.
I think GW is trying to get production out of a DL without investing a lot of resources into it, which is good football strategy--but when you don't get that production, 2006 happens. |
Re: Points on Landry and D-Line
Personnel wise, our defensive line as it stands now is hardly any different from the line we had in '04 when we ranked 3rd overall on defense. The difference maker was Antonio Pierce.
Yes Pierce was a difference maker, yes Fletcher does address that need. The OTHER difference between 04 and now is three years of aging. |

You say we keep ignoring the D-line? Not so, we addressed it last year in Carter, and what happened? Everyone is now talking as if he doesn't exist, because basically he doesn't. I don't want DL for the sake of need, I want a difference maker and I didn't see that in this draft, not one of these guy's is better than Mario Williams was coming out last year and take a look at how much trouble MW had against NFL caliber lineman. Landry on the other hand has the opportunity to be great, and I think he will achieve that goal fairly early in his career, while allowing Taylor to ascend to the #1 saftey in the league! |
