Sh@t talkers?!

Tonight I met my friend's boyfriend for the first time. I tried to be friendly, but things quickly took a turn for the worst. He told me he was from Virgnina, and he was wearing a UVA hat, and being a TERP alumni, I told him I had love for other ACC teams unless it's Duke. At this point things started to get ugly.

He told me he was a huge Duke basketball fan, yet he's wearing a UVA hat, I didnt know what to say to him. Then, since he's from VA, I asked him if he was a Skins fan, he laughed at me and told me that he hated the Skins', and that he was a Steelers fan. At this point I wanted to smack him in the face. We have a poser from Virginia wearing a UVA hat, who told me he was a "die hard" Duke baskeball fan, and loved the Steelers. Why would a Steelers fan have to talk shit about that skins? I wanted to throw up in a bucket and then dump it on this guy's head.

He then proceeded to mock the Skins' by saying "The best day of the year for Reskins fans is draft day." He then snickered to himself like he just make some type of clever comment. I wanted to take my half full beer and throw it at his stupid ass. I mentioned to him that I don't even care about the Steelers because they're an AFC team that we rarely play. In returm he said, " I got two words for you, 'Steve Spurrier'." I really didnt know what to think about this, I really wanted to just stand up and throw his, I'm from Virginia and I'm wearing a UVA hat, but I'm a die hard Duke basketball and Steerlers fan, who talks shit about the Skins, in the pool. But, I refrained. What a f#ckin c*nt.

Seems like you held back a bit. It would have been nice to smack the jackass upside his head, but in real life that is a troubling propostion that might lead to bad things like jail because if you actually give the litttle bitch a nice punch in his jugular he might not be able to handle it. Anyway way to hold back. The guy was obviously not much of a football fan anyway.

if the steelers dont win the super bowl, they would be nothing more then the eagles. but the skins deserve most of the crap that gets piled on them

I guess I should get rid of my Cowboys jacket then.

I don't like it when people mock the Redskins, either. That's why I always have other teams' hats to put on when people criticize the Redskins. I get the kind you can fold up and put in your pocket; they are easier to carry around.

But seriously, it seems like you had to deal with someone who was looking to make you mad. Laron Landry talked about regretting the one time that he let someone get him upset in a game, and he went after him.

If someone gives you a gift and you refuse it, who does the gift then belong to? It still belongs to the person who offered it.

If someone tries to provoke you, and you stay cool, who do the words of the provacateur belong to? They belong to the person who spoke them. If you stay cool, it will really drive people who want to get to you crazy in the long run.

It's not uncommon for people to pull for more than one team in college sports. I know of several people who don't really have one particular team they root for, they are just a fan of the conference. I usually pull for Duke basketball, but I will pull for the other teams as well, depending on the match ups. Well, the only team I can't bring myself to root for is UNC. I think of UNC like I think of the Dallas Cowboys!

But anyways, I guess I have a different view on basketball, since football is my favorite sport and I never follow NBA basketball.

believe it or not, there are fans of other teams that live in Va. and if the skins didn't stink year in and year out, then no one would have anything to say. fact is, Danny and Co. bring on the bashing them selves. Win some games, make the playoffs consistantly, and the chatter will stop. Steelers fans have a lot more good things that have happened in their franchise the last 10 years than we have.

I find it amazing how people pile all the crap on Snyder. Don't get me wrong I'm not in love with this owner, but I can remember when Cook was the owner and we never seemed to get the big names. Especially in his last years. He seemed to get the guy no one knew about or someone who was in his last years. Some people thought it was Gibbs liking the older smarter players instead of the younger players who made mistakes. Theres even some grumbling that it was the GM who never got the names Gibbs asked for. Who really knows. I guess I'm trying to say that you can't please everyone all the time. I prefer Snyder because he does get the big names and is showing he is trying to win vs. the coaches trying to save a buck for themselves. There are some teams that I'm glad we are not rooting for. I will also say I agree with building through the draft but Gibbs has to get the right personel in the right positions to run his offense before he can look to trying to get future personel. Just like not everyone fits into the West Coast offense. Some WC offensive player don't work in Gibbs style. I will admit evaluation is the key and we have piss pour evaluation. Thats not the owner though thats the coaches and staff they higher to evaluate.

I wrote this last night when I got back from the bar. It's definitely a little exagerated, lol. I didnt actually want to throw my beer at him or throw up in a bucket and dump it on his head, I just thought I'd spice it up a little bit. As for throwing him in the pool, he was wearing a bathing suit, but I coulda got his UVA hat wet, lol.

He obviously doesnt know what he's talking about. Draft Day is meaningless to the Skins as they are not interested in the draft.

That's exactly what I was thinking, not quite with the negative undertone but still somewhat similiar. The Skins best day is the first day of free agency.

A guys like this, you can talk sh*t to him all day, and criticize his teams, you won't get anywhere. He's got no loyalty to any team, and just doesn't understand it; he's a pathetic front runner. Of course he's a Duke fan and a Steelers fan; I'm sure he's also got a Patriots hat somewhere in his closet, right next to the Michael Jordan jersey he wore all the time 10 years okay. He's like a little 5 year old brat who is just running around trying to annoy people. Whoever your friend is, she can do a lot better. I think the best way you can get back at him is by telling her that he is currently getting ridiculed by a bunch of people who have no respect for his manhood.

ABSOLUTELY! If he's a UVA'er just mention the HOKIES, and UVA's pathetic record against VA's REAL team in the modern era. Its white collar snobs versus blue collar Joes, and my heart is with the JOEs. Who the hell wears coats and ties to a tailgate after all (seriously, UVA fans sip wine and dress up for games, wierd huh?)? One HellUVA joke.

Re: Sh@t talkers?!

I have problems with ppl from Maryland who used to be skins fans who then switched their allegiances to the Ravens during the season that they won the superbowl or after. That franchise is lucky they got their success soon after they moved to B'more otherwise there would be no sellouts crowds full of fair weather fans. Worse still, IMO, are the ppl who like both the Skins and Ravens. Pick ONE of them, especially because they are cross-town rivals. As a terp alum, I had to deal with these baltimorons on a regular basis talking about how great their franchise was. They claim that they have 2 rings to our 3, but then I point out that it wasn't the same franchise but rather 1 for the b'more Colts and the other for the old Cleveland Browns (one of the worst in league history prior to the move). My level of detestability for the Ravens now rivals my hatred of the Cowboys, no joke.

As for front-runners, ppl who don't anything about sports by default root for the team that is winning. Therefore to root for a team like lakers in bball, or other teams that u have no direct geographical (or other) ties is synonymous with being an uninformed fan, unless there is evidence to the contrary.

This stuff is actually funny. I see people on here that are mad or angry at people who live in the area and aren't Redskin fans. Do you know how crazy that is. I am a homer, of course. I bleed burgandy and gold. but come on people. People who jumped ship to the Redskins when the colts left weren't really skins fans anyway, probably more football fans. Now they have a team back, they can call their own of course they are going to jump ship. In Charlotte, people here were Redskin's fans, when the Panthers came in, they adopted them as their own. You can't blame them for jumping ship. I personally can't stand the panthers, but when you are from the area and you get a team, you can't blame people for pulling for their team.

the fact is, there are a ton of bandwagoners out there, always will be. you, me, nobody can do anything about those people. Look at it this way, when the Skins start winning on a consistant basis, we will have some more skins jerseys floating around.

As far and the geographical thing.. I have always been and SF Giants fan, and I have never even been to SF. So, am I not suppose to root for the Giants? People sometimes just latch onto a franchise and there really isn't any explination for it.

I am from Gettysburg PA, and I can assure that if Gburg were to be given an NFL team they would at best be my second favorite team. If you jump ship to a new team just because they are closer to you you were never a real fan to begin with.

Re: Sh@t talkers?!

For me the issue isn't that a new team came here or geography or anything. The issue is that ppl who had watched the skins for 20+ years and rooted for them through the good times when they won their superbowls and called themselves die-hard skins fans at some point, just switched teams when the skins were going through tough times and the ravens happened to achieve success as soon as they got here. If you didn't have a team until the ravens came to town and then supported them from the beginning when they first moved to b'more thats fine. But to switch to the team that won the superbowl the most recently is pathetic. Also where were these so-called fans two years ago when the ravens missed the playoffs? Weren't they asking for Brian Billick's blood after losing two games in a row last year (with a 4-2 record at the time), which eventually led to them firing Jim Fassell? If you're gonna throw away years of tradition just to support a team that is temporarily winning, that's ur prerogative but to me thats despicable and as someone said before u aren't really a true fan of anything.

It's the reason I am still an O's fan and not the Nats who just came to town. I grew up watching the O's through their struggles and Cal break the record and to me thats irreplaceable, i'm not gonna just start rooting for the nats even if they won a world series.

The difference between Cooke and Snyder is that ol' Jack got results. He did that by having a top notch front office that evaluated talent by talent, not by reputation. If they didn't get the talent Gibbs wanted, they got him players he could win with. Snyder's front office is suspect. The "proven commodities" they select are suspect. I am glad you brought the O's into this. I think I can relate to why Panther fans jumped off the skins, or the Ravens fans jumped off also. I was a HUGE O's fan. (also a SF Giants fan, but that was because I played for the Giants in little leage and just kept up with them) I had season tickets to the O's. I still root for the O's, but if a team were to be moved to charlotte I would certainly root for them as well. and here is the reason : PETER ANGELOS!! I can not stand this guy. He wanted to compete and spent the money to compete every year though the early to late 90's. which we went to the ALCS two years straight, had one of the greatest managers of our time (Davey Johnson). One, he couldn't handle Daveys "I wont take any of your crap, its my team" attitude and fired him the year he won manager of the year. plus when he got word DC was thinking of bringing baseball back, he got rid of all the good players and put a mediocore team on the field, knowing attendance would drop, then cried that they would never survive with another team in the area. He has driven the O's into the ground! I still root for the O's, but am not as die hard as I once was, because of his sorry ass. So, I can see how some people could root for the skins all those years under Cook, then get fed up with Danny and his ways, and free spending, mediocore teams and jumping to the Panthers, or Ravens, or who ever.

Now, I could never jump ship from the skins, no matter what. But I do understand why people do it.

Don't hold back next time!!! I went to college at a state school in PA with about 5,000 eagles fans. In four years there I got into at least one fight per season representing the skins. The highlight had to be when someone tried to tell be that Andy Reid was seriously a better coach then Joe Gibbs. After trying to make him realize that Joe Gibbs was already in the Hall of Fame and WON super bowls he decided to get in my face a little bit. Me being the confrontational person that I am got in face his and starting getting real loud with him. He ended up giving me a little bit of a push to get out of his face so I head butted him and split his face open. Needless to say I didn't have to deal with many Eagles fans after that one.
Well, didn't read this one until I already wrote to "beware the guy in the UVa hat," now I feel all of a sudden compelled to defend my University. I'll just say that, like all stereotypes, this one grossly oversimplies the populations of the two schools. Al Groh has also been fairly successful in scaling down the tie-wearing and such. I would further point out that dressing up for football games is hardly a UVa specific characteristic. I am now pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina and girls wear sundresses to games as they do at many of the other SEC schools (including Auburn, who did beat VA Tech in the Sugar Bowl a couple of years ago). It is more of an "Old South" nostalgia (which has its own problems) rather than a "white collar" phenomena (both elitest, perhaps, but not exactly the same). Not sure when you want to start the "modern era" either, but the all-time record between the two schools is 37-44-5 so not nearly as lopsided as you imply. I will admit that the past decade has been pretty rough, but when UVa has had a quarterback they have done well (Aaron Brooks, wins in 1997, 1998) and Matt Schaub (win in 2003). I will let everyone get back to talking Redskins now, but you know how it is, it is ok to make fun of a team yourself, but when someone else does so you feel compelled to respond.

people who pick random teams and root for them are usually not big sports fans. Big sports fans stick with a team through good and bad. No one should be allowed to root for duke unless they live in NC or were smart enough to get in and go there......or have family that went there. You shoulda bashed UVA BBall and Football, both those teams underachieve like the skins every year.
I don't think you can really compare Cooke and Snyder. They're from two completely different eras. Salary cap and free agency have a huge impact on how the business is run.
Tell ya what; I think Cooke, who owned and won with the LA Lakers, owned the LA Kings, built the LA Forum, promoted the first Ali-Frazier fight, not to mention his Redskins years, would manage the new era better than Snyder is.

(Of course, it was also Cooke who foisted Norv Turner on us.)
It's the reason I am still an O's fan and not the Nats who just came to town. I grew up watching the O's through their struggles and Cal break the record and to me thats irreplaceable, i'm not gonna just start rooting for the nats even if they won a world series.
I think that's an interesting point, however, I do find myself pulling for the Nats, too. They're not "my team," but I do like them. Not as much as I like the Mets (cause I like the way Reyes and Wright play) or the Marlins (cause they're no real threat, but I love Cabrera and the D Train). The funniest thing about this is that all 3 teams are in the NL East, cause I'm not a huge NL guy I like a lot of the NL teams. I don't really hate any NL teams.

Anyway, while I agree with your point because the O's will always be "my team." I will still root for other teams. The same way I do with the Skins. That's my team, but I like to watch a bunch of others.

I would let it go dude. I am from Michigan, went to EMU just down the road from U of M, but because of my uncle, was a big Buckeye fan. Go figure. Guy seems like a fair weather fan also. Steelers? Duke? Perennial winners usually attract fair weather fans that just want to attach themselves to a winner. Duke is going downhill and without Cowher, the Steelers will decline as well.
