I don't like how she seems lean heavily on Cris Carter's quote about how other coaches would react and how Gibbs seems to have lost his players, and so much of that quote isn't rooted in any actual proof, just assumptions.

Women don't know shit about football. Sally Jenkins has no idea what the hell is going on. The fact that she writes these negative articles about the Skins over and over should say something. She pronounced them dead when they made their playoff run. Now this! Questioning Gibbs b/c Taylor wants a new contract or whatever. How the hell does he prevent any Redskins from ever being unhappy???

First she says that the players' absence is a "sure sign of trouble":
"For Springs and Taylor to pull no-shows is...a sure sign of trouble."

Then, she goes on to say how it's not anything new:
"But Taylor has been completely unreachable -- as usual. The fact is, the 24-year-old Taylor has never really been reachable, in any sense."

If this behavior is not new, and it hasn't been a problem in the past, what is the big deal now?

I agree with the mods..let's get back on track with dissecting Jenkins' latest piece of tripe.

Matty-yes we can now set our watches again. Sally has chimed in and the universe is right once again.

Smoot-exactly what I was thinking. While I don't lend a lot of credence to what Carter says I also don't think he is a dumbass. In this case though it sounds more like someone speaking off the cuff and not really thinking about it. How does he know how all those coahces deal with this stuff? I doubt he really does. Just spouting off it seems to me.

On the whole she does raise some interesting points that I would tend to agree with slightly but she clearly roots all of her assertions in bias and agenda. She doesn't like Snyder and doesn't really like the Skins. Who cares? It is not her job to like them. But it is also not her job to DISLIKE them and commit to bash whenever she feels like it or it is convenient. Pieces like this would get a lot more respect from me if she didn't wait until turbulent times (or perceived turbulent times) to write pieces on the Skins. It just seems like she waits until it is opportune to bash them and never writes anything positive even when things are going well. That's crap. Journalists don't get the luxury of having their pieces stand alone. Look at the body of work and if it shows bias and agenda then you have to discount everything accordingly. It is the same with Pastabelly. He writes decent stuff a lot but he also writes a ton of crap and not just about the Skins. It is why he has so is losing respect with many.

What bugs me is that she weaves these little tales out of her manhattan apartment. The bottom line is simple: springs and taylor are holding out because of money. Sean Taylor signed the contract - an $18 million dollar contract. That might not be much to him, but it's a heckuva lot to me. And shawn springs is 32. That might not be too old to do my puny job, but it's fair to ask if he's getting too old to play professional football. So blame these guys if you want, but please, don't try and say this is Gibbs fault because he drafted the best player in the draft, who just happens to also play safety. To do that is to agree with jenkins and admit that you really don't either understand football or business.

I haven't read anywhere that Springs is actually holding oput for more money. He's making some pretty decent change actually. Taylor has a fairly legitimate contractual gripe but I think he's just a superstar that is so used to doing anything he damn well pleases that he doesn't care to explain himself for not showing up.

With quite a few NFL teams constantly having disciplinary problems these days, it seems like the Redskins, with the exception of the one Taylor incident,rarely pop up on the radar screen.

I think you can attribute some of this to Gibbs' "being in touch."

Neither guy is holding out. OTA workouts are not mandatory.

Sally Jenkins rarely has anything positive to say about the Redskins. I'm surprised the Washington Post continues to publish this garbage. It's much too early to make anything of these absences. Springs had informed his position coach, he wasn't going to show up until June and he is working our with a specialist. What's the problem. Sean Taylor has been a no show on these voluntary workouts since he has been a Skin. Obviously it doesn't bother him that he is working on Gibbs's last nerve. And this is not the way to negotiate a contract extension. But he is young and his agent has done this before with his other clients. Hopefully we won't see another TO experience.

Jenkins' article is off base, though it is not without any merit, in my view.

I think that Jenkins raises a good point in that the Redskins could have signed Ryan Clark for 1.5 million, and if GW had been more tuned in to what Clark meant to the team and to Sean Taylor, we would have a lot more money available, would have had a much better team last year, and more harmony overall. Human beings being imperfect, mistakes are made, and that is part of life needless to say. One good result is that we now have a great new prospect in Laron Landry.

However, you can't blame Coach Gibbs because of Taylor's decision to be awol; that is Taylor's choice. Sean Taylor has a contract he is playing under and that is not related to personnel decisions the team makes that he may or may not like. He is someone who it has been difficult to reach not infrequently, as Jenkins points out. He may be an emotional person and is responding according to what his feelings are. Taylor has been awol when Ryan Clark was on the team too. The fact is that the Redskins have been very patient and supportive of him through all of his legal difficulties. There is no shame whatsoever for Coach Gibbs in a grown man's decision not to be in touch. To blame Gibbs, as Jenkins does is spurious. As for Cris Carter, he is paid to make inflammatory statements. Enough said about his view.

Shawn Springs is causing a needless disruption by his absense, and this is his decision. Yes, the Redskins tried to replace him, and you can't blame them for that, because so much depends on having a healthy secondary. Yes, they asked him to take a pay cut, and that was their right. It was his right to refuse, and that is over and done with. Those things happened, but that is different from Springs' decision not to show up. He may relate them in his mind, and Jenkins may do that, but it really comes down to a grown man who is making a decision that simply suits his purposes. It has nothing legitimate to do with Coach Gibbs.

It is still early, and hopefully the two players will recognize the wisdom is returning to the fold soon. Mistakes are made by human beings and that is life.

The old saying in media is: "It doesn't matter what they say about you...as long as they're talking about you". I would bet that Sally generates a larger response than many of the WPs other sportswriters because of her negativity towards the Skins. There is not much concrete feedback a sportswriter can get other than E-mail or written responses to their articles. Sally knows how to play the game and I'm sure that Manhattan apartment doesn't come cheap. I just ignore Sally and this useless trash and use her articles for what they are best for, lining the bottom of a bird cage or to start up the old fireplace.

Do we have to go through all of this every year with Taylor and jumping to all of theses made up conclusions. Tayler has never been very good at showning up for these practices and for that matter comunicating with the FO. When he does show up he is in shape and ready to begin the new year. I think that all of the coaches have comented at some point about how ST gives it 110% ever pratice and works his butt off at every pratice. So until does something differently I really don't care what he is doing as long he is staying out of trouble.

Really, my only gripe with Sean Taylor showing up is this: such a big deal was made last year about how he and Arch didn't communicate well and how he really missed Ryan Clark. Well now's a chance for him to start fresh with Landry. To take on the role for Landry that Clark did for him.

That'd be nice to see him step up and participate in that sense. For his own conditioning though he doesn't need to be there.
