Portis apparently is not a dog lover
According to PFT, Portis made some pretty dumb comments:
PORTIS SUPPORTS VICK Redskins running back Clinton Portis and left tackle Chris Samuels have spoken out in support of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who currently is caught up in a dog-fighting investigation. But they're not saying that Vick is innocent. Per Portis, it's no big deal if Vick is guilty. "I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog," Portis told WAVY-TV. "If that's what he wants to do, do it." As Portis spoke, Samuels started laughing, and at one point raised his eyebrows with (as we interpret it) an "oh sh-t I can't believe he's saying this" look on his face. "I think people should mind their business," Portis added. In response to the question of whether dog-fighting is prevalent in the NFL and the NBA, Portis said, "I mean it's prevalent in life. . . . I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I know a lot of back roads that got the dog fight if you want to go see it." Um, we're not licensed to practice law in Virginia, but we don't think that the Commonwealth has formally recognized the defenses of "everybody does it" or "if it's behind closed doors, it's okay." And if we didn't know better (and, actually, we don't), we'd be inclined to wonder whether Portis has been to a few of those dog fights in Laurel, Mississippi. Or in Surry County, Virginia. And Clinton's comments provide even more reason to believe that Ray Buchanan said what Chris Landry said he said about Vick and dog fighting. The lesson here is that current and former NFL players look out for each other, no matter how ridiculous they look or sound when doing so. Need more evidence that Portis should be ignored on this point? He refers to Vick as a "positive role model." We need to know whether Clinton gave Mike this label for giving the middle finger to the home fans (including kids) or giving an STD to the ex-girlfriend. Or maybe he's referring to the water bottle thing. There are just so many positive things from which to choose. |

Can't imagine Gibbs will either. |

think Vick will feel Godell's wrath?

Haha..i dont know Portis just says alotta stuff...
|
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
I like Portis, but damn that's the stupidest thing I have ever heard him say.
Maybe this issue needs to be put way out in the public spotlight and if a few ignorant NFL stars are the ones to do it so be it. Obviously some people need an education on how to treat man's best friend. |
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
Wow I can't believe it..
|
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
I'm down in outer banks right now and just saw it on t.v. It was pretty much stereotypical Clinton Portis joking around. I wouldn't really look too much into this.

Bob Costas hates dogs too:

WOW. This is worthy of its own thread and i hope the moderators get a hold of it. This honestly makes me feel sick because to be honest CP was probaly my favorite skin. I mean the only reason Taylor wasn't was because of his immaturity but now that he's grown i dont even know what to say. I am honestly speachless. WTF is Portis thinkin. I'm not tryin to seem preechy but im in the boat with Gibbs where I like to see players with good values and good morals. The fact that Portis is making light of this dog situation is a joke. You can put me on the record right here and mark this down, if there is not a good explanation for these comment's I want Portis traded, as much as I loved him there is no room for this. I expect the foot to come down hard and soon. MODERATORS if this is true try to make as much impat as possible. Portis is a great player no doubt but I feel if were gonna go to the show with gibbs it's gonna take character and the shit aint helpin. I want some light on this and i want it soon. |
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
I should have mentioned that this could all be bullshit(and i hope it is). But until I hear otherwise I will defend my previous statements.
|
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
He likes to goof around with the media, but I don't think he was kidding about this. Dammit Clinton. This isn't a joke. Vick is on the verge of being in deep, felony shit. And having our star tailback back him up, joking or not, is bad news. Man, my best friend is a dog lover and Skins hater. I'm never gonna hear the end of this....

Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
The first and main thing that I think Clinton was doing is taking the chance, since he was in the Virginia Beach area, to defend a fellow football player who is from that area, and who has been much maligned.
What the PFW article does is insinuate in libelous fashion that Portis might have participated in such events in the past, and purposefully tries to stir up hostility against him. The article is a crock; yellow journalism. As far as dog fighting, to me there is a cultural divide here. Dog fights may well be common in the rural South as Clinton says. People may view them as a tolerated norm. They aren't good, but I can see how if you grow up with them that you could be desensitized to seeing them as a bad thing. I recently saw a movie about slaughterhouses and I can say that what the meat industry, and also what the dairy and chicken industries, do to animals is not a good thing either. I'm not a fan of what boxing, ultimate fighting or a lot of things do to people either. I think it's good that there is this public discussion going on about the issue, because it will cause people to reflect and hopefully reconsider participating in this practice. It's no big deal to me at all and I don't think any less of Clinton just because he thinks something that differs from me. He doesn't participate in these kind of events himself. I think we all are best when we recognize that there are different cultural norms and try to tolerate each other's views and work toward common ground. |
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
If this is true, then Skins and NFL should look further into the dog fighting thing. These millionaires don't need to be 'feeling gangsta' fighting dogs. And if ya gonna fight dogs goto a country where its ok. No reason a player in his prime should sacrifice his potential in Hall of Fame/ NFL folklore history. Quite an incredible oppurtunity to be a player in the NFL. The full wrath of the law should come down on Vick and/or Portis or anyone involved an such an illegal activity.

Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
Look, who gives a shit if ther are dog fighting rings. There are human fighting rings too. Most people refer to it as boxing. But, there are many other hand to hand sports that go to the death that are not illegal. Who is it to say that it is wright or wrong. Iyou stop dog fighting, then you have to stop boxing. Are we not more important than the animals?
Alot of people would rebute that animals being raised and trained to fight is inhumane What about the peolpe that were brought up on fighting? Is that humane? The point that I am trying to put across is that you cannot say that it is ok for a person to compete in a fight while it is not ok for any other animal. If they want to criminalize dog fighting, then human fighting should be just as illegal. I do not like boxing or any other martial art, nor am I an animal lover. I just believe that what is fair, is fair across the board. |

maybe but portis also said on ballers on bet last night that we would be in the nfc championship game at least |
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
If you want to compare humans to animals, SSG. Isn't that whole "It's X's property" the same type of bullshit people used to defend slavery? He can kill him, that's his slave.
It's ridiculous to say that this should be equated to boxing. First of all, boxers at any time can say stop, they get paid a ton of money, and have the best doctors in the world able to help them out. It's also a conscious decision to fight. These dogs are being forced to fight and often both end up dying in hideous conditions. If they find out that Vick has been a part of this (rumors of dog fighting and Vick go back to his days at Tech at least) he should be banned from the NFL. |

oh oh dont like where this is going

Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
Portis sounds like a moron in that article,Im glad O.J. wasnt a friend of his
Reporter: what do you think about O.J. ? Portis: I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I know a lot of back roads that got the bitches stabbed if you want to go see it." and i dont buy the argument if you grew up with it you might think its ok,I grew up with a rascist father and I knew from an early age that it wasnt right to hate someone because of their skin color, you either know right from wrong or you dont care if its right or wrong |

You know, you are right. Dogs will one day become human, and so breeding them and using them for fighting really isn't that big a deal at all. |

OK, then stop bitching about it! |
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
I wonder how much thought Portis put into his response about the issue, had he thoughtfully considered the reaction his remarks were going to create, maybe he would think to reconsider. By me being an avid dog lover, I consider his remarks offensive, as well as insensitive to an aged old love affair between man and dog.
Tom Lantos, D-Calif. chairman of the congressional friends of animals caucus wrote a letter to Roger Goodell urging strong action in the event it's founded Vick is in anyway (knowingly) involved in such hideous behavior.Regardless of whether you like dogs or not, there is no place in a civilized society for this type activity. |

It is our intent to find out just how serious he is, and believe me he does not have to get on a plane to travel to Montgomery County, Md. where we had serious problems of this very nature just a short while ago. Once the legal authorities become involved (local or otherwise) where illegal activity is aledged involving NFL players, it becomes the responsibility of all those concerned to get to the bottom of the problem. I do not believe it was the intention of anyone here to demonize Clinton Portis, I do however believe that his remarks were of a sensitive nature, and one could very easily gather from his remarks the perception he did not find Vick's association in any way reprehensible. |

Yes , maybe Vicks lawyers should use that defence ,,,, the dogs made him come to the fights ,,, the dogs set the fights up and charged $$$$ ,,, they can think ,,, they can speak and leap tall buildings !!!These are educated pitbulls they can read and write and even have Va drivers licence's ! Maybe the dogs have degrees they're super dogs !!!!! |
Re: Portis apparently is not a dog lover
I wouldn't worry about what CP said, unless he himself is involved with dog fighting. Probably bored and just wants to make the papers, etc.

Guys, may want to excuse me for being so sensitive on this subject, but just sixteen month's ago one of my dogs was viciously attacked and mutilated by by an out of control Pit bull Terrier. Vet bill was enormous, three different court appearances to recover expences for untold suffering to the animal. I share no sympathy for anyone involved in what Vick is being acused, or for anyone who condone it. |

Does anyone have a link to this interview online? I kinda wanna see it myself before I judge.

The main difference is people CHOOSE to box or fight in UFC. The animals that are made to dogfight have no choice in the matter. What makes the whole issue of dogfighting worse is that as humans we are using an otherwise innocent and defenseless animal to suffer, be maimed and/or die simply for our amusement. To me it is sickening that people participate in this and support it. You are dead wrong on this issue! I just watched the interview and Portis was not joking, he was dead serious. Samuels simply said he felt the media should not be pushing this so hard until Vick is actually convicted. While Portis was talking the look on Samuels' face speaks volumes (it was definitely a "Oh $@%* I can't believe he is saying this). Dogfighting is a felony in 48 states and a crime in all 50 for a reason. |
