Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

If this is the attitude of their head coach than its no wonder his players are getting in trouble every time they turn around. No responsibility for their own actions. Its always somebody elses fault.

I know he appologized for it but all that is is damage control. Kinda like the Portis situation.

MARVIN APOLOGIZES FOR "PROFILING" REMARKS

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has apologized (via a statement released by the team) for comments from Wednesday suggesting that police in the Cincinnati area are profiling Bengals players.

"Yesterday, I gave a radio interview and made some comments that did not illustrate the high regard I have for the Cincinnati Police Department," Lewis said. "I apologize that what I said did not reflect my true feelings."

Our guess? Marvin realized that accusing the cops of profiling Bengals players was the most effective way to ensure that they will.

Marvin also realized, we believe, that he was stoking racial tensions in a city that has a history of fragile relations in this regard. Of course, he's now trying to say that he wasn't.

"At no point did I say or mean to imply that these issues had anything to do with race," Lewis said. "Broadcast comments to the contrary are simply not true. When I spoke of our players being perhaps more subject to scrutiny than others, I was referring to their standing as public figures."

Bull, we say. The word "profiling" implies that decision are made based on superficial characteristics. In a city that is far bigger than the "small place" that Lewis makes it out to be, players from the local professional football team can be "profiled" only if (as a reader pointed out this afternoon) they are wearing their helmets (or, in the case of Chris Henry, their jerseys) while driving around town.

Besides, "profiling" is one of those code words that imply racially-based motives, regardless of whether the word "racial" is plopped down in front of it.

So if Lewis is now falling all over himself to say that he didn't mean what he said, why did he say it? Does he say other things that he doesn't mean? Isn't the ability to control of the connection between his brain and his tongue part of the gig?

We think that Lewis meant what he said, and that we wouldn't have heard a peep about it if someone in the organization hadn't been reminded that a team that plays for free in a stadium fully funded by the public should not be criticizing the public servants who get paid far less to put their lives and limbs in jeopardy every day.

The end result? We think that Marvin is now officially on the hot seat, and he could be the former coach of the Bengals by January of 2008.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not defending Marvin at all, but what kind of asshole cop goes around pulling people over for not using their blinkers? Sure, it pisses me off greatly when people don't, but MAN what a douchebag.

Way to have a lot to do that day cop.

IMO it doesn't matter because the cop was doing his job. The guy was driving on a suspended license. He shouldn't have been driving in the first place and I say "nice work" to the officer for doing his job.

Ah, well that makes more sense. All I heard was, "He pulled our player over for not using a signal light."

I didn't know the rest of it because I was half-asleep this AM when I heard it. If that's the case, then good.

I just thought the cop was arbitrarily pulling people over for not using turn signals.

If all of his paperwork (i.e. License, insurance, registation) was in order he probably would have just gotten a warning. My point is we shouldn't be crticizing the cop for pulling him over just for a blinker. The driver broke the law and got busted for it.

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

I think Marvin needs to redirect his attention to his players. Perhaps a big sign in the locker room that says "NO BREAK LAW = NO GET ARRESTED".......he might have to simplify it a little bit for guys like Chris Henry (perhaps a series of Tarzan-like grunts could be effective), but I think some of his guys might actually get the point.

This is all a sarcastic way of saying Marvin was totally out of line here. As has been said already, take some responsibility. Why would you want to give your idiot repeat offenders an out by letting them say "Coach, it wasn't my fault, the cops are just after us." I'm reminded of the scene in "Liar Liar" where Jim Carrey's client just committed some crime and wanted advice and Carrey simply picks up the phone and yells "Stop breaking the law, asshole!". Personally, I think Marvin would be wise to start every practice the same way.

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

I can sense Lewis's frustration over this issue, expecially with the scrutiny I am sure the team owner and commish are putting him under given the negative publicity re: the Bengals. I can just imagine Lewis hearing about this from the team attorney....

"What, another idiot got arrested? What'd he do?...A TURN SIGNAL!?!?! Sheesh, I can't get a break. Why don't those cops target real criminals and cut me a little slack for criminy's sake?"

Unfortunatly, Marv couldn't keep his feelings in check when on camera and he's now in backtrack mode. Clinton is a player, his stupidity is almost exusable (I said almost). Marv's a coach and should know better.

Perhaps some of the guys are being targeted. I'm not making excuses for any of the Bengals by any means. But Marvin Lewis is a well respected NFL coach. He's not just going to say some dumb shit w/out some kind of reasoning behind it. If guys are bring pulled over for not using a turn signals then that's BS. I see cops break the laws more times then i can count. Speeding, not using turn signals, parking illegally and so on.

I'll just say it. If a police officer sees a young black person in a nice car, ESPCIALLY IN CINNINATTI OHIO, they are automatically going to do a double take and be suspicious. That's just how it is, and that's always how it's going to be.

I agree (even though I hate people that don't use signals), and in saying Marvin should have kept is mouth shut on the issue is in no way a suggestion that he is wrong.

Police profile constantly on traffic stops, whether it is policy to do so or not. Even if the profiling isn't racial, in most cop's minds, the odds of pulling over a blinged out 'sclade riding on 22's with limo tint all around and finding criminal behavior (suspended licenses, narcotics, driver impairment) is much greater than pulling over a minivan with soccer stickers on it. Whether we all agree with that statment or not, that is what the cops are thinking.

That's called profiling my friend. Too many times cops are riding around looking for some BS reason to pull someone over. They pull that shit all the time. Yet they are the first ones to whiz past you on the highway doing 90 when they are just going to the grocery store.

I bet that is what is going on in Cinn. and that's why Marvin Lewis said what he said. Again I'm not backing Chris Henry and the gang one bit. They need to clean up their act in the worst way. But know that there is some truth to what Marvin Lewis is saying. As a matter of fact I would put alot of stock into what he is saying.

Now in no means am I going to take up for Chris Henry. Kid needs to clean up his act. But why did those people in Ket. leak to the media that he failed his drug test when it wasn't true? Whoever did this should be fired. They are just as wrong as Henry was for breaking the law IMO.

How do you know that?

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

Besides the obvious PC reasons, the problem with profiling is?
Is this not a way for the cops to be more effective with the resources they have? Do they not look to a certain age, sex, race for specific types of crimes? Do they not use these techniques because past experience has taught them it is a way to maximize their effectiveness?
Would we rather them waste time checking out people who most likely have nothing to hide?
The airport is a classic example. Many times have I seen grandpa, pasty white old guy being searched at the check point. Does anybody really think he is packin' a couple of pounds of C-4, or perhaps it is better to concentrate on those that typically blow up airliners??????????
yes that's right, that threat seems to be coming from middle eastern males.
I don't know the answers to all these questions, but this makes sense to me.

Schneed10 05-25-2007 12:43 PM

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

I have no problem with profiling, racial or otherwise. I remember being 20 years old and driving back home from my girlfriend's house at about 1:00 am in the morning. I came upon a DUI checkpoint where the cops had everyone slow down, they looked at you, and decided whether or not to have you blow a breathalizer. They took one look at me being a young guy out at 1:00 am and ordered me to go blow the breathalizer. I passed, hadn't had a single drink, and the cop doing the tests yells up to the cops at the point, "Hey you gotta send me better candidates, this guy's clean too!" And the cop at the point yells back "You said send in any young kids, so I am!"

I had no problem with that because they're right, males age 18-25 are known to be the most careless drivers in the world, and the most likely group to get behind the wheel under the influence. I wasn't one of them, but I couldn't fault them for checking me, just look at the odds.

Race isn't the only part of the profile cops should be depending on. Their age, their clothes, the make of car they're driving, how loud their music is, what type of music it is, all of these things tell cops a little bit about you. Are those profiles always right? Of course not. But if they pull you over and you've done nothing wrong, then the worst thing that happens to you is you're delayed 15 minutes while they check you out, and you get to be on your merry way no matter what color your skin is, what car you're driving, how old you are, or how loud your tunes are playing.

And if you've done nothing wrong and you're a law-abiding citizen, you thank the cops after they make you blow the breathalizer at a DUI checkpoint, because those efforts are helping reduce the number of drunk maniacs on the road that put your life in danger.

Schneed10 05-25-2007 12:58 PM

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

In fact, when cops profile people, I'd say that race is only a small part of the equation. If a cop sees a young black man driving a Mercedes on 20-inch chrome wheels, hat to the side, with N.W.A. pumping from the system; and then the cop sees a middle aged black man driving a Honda Accord wearing a shirt and tie with Stevie Wonder playing at a normal level, the cop is going to profile those two very differently.

Now, the older guy could be on his way to sell some drugs, and the younger guy could be on his way to a job interview for all we know. Or both of them could be on their way to job interviews. But if I'm a cop and I see both men forget to turn on their blinker before turning, I'm going to pull the younger guy over and let the older guy go.

You may want to check you local laws but cops cannot just ask a person to take a breath teast. Yes they can ask you to pull over to ask you questions and if they smell alc. they can then ask you to do those little road test. If then they ask you to blow in their hand held tester it is not permissible in court because it has to be done by a person certified to do the test. Yes they can include it in their evidence but they cannot convict you of DUI by that test alone. The reason they ask permission to do the road side test is that it will confirm their suspicions and if you noticed I said asked permission. This is voluntary as the cop is not cert. as I mentioned above.

Yeah the part I failed to mention was he asked if I had anything to drink that night, and I said I had a beer with dinner (which was like 6 hours before getting pulled over). But regardless, if you indicate that you've had anything to drink, I think they have probable cause to test you. I'm no lawyer though.

When I was a kid, I used to drive a fairly tricked out 61' Corvette. (A restoration project I bought out of a barnyard where it had been sitting for 10 years). It drew the attn of every cop in a 6 county radius. They profiled me as someone who was ABUSING the local speed, noise, safety statutes with abandon for that time.
Guess what........they were right!

There is a huge element of truth to this, perhaps not by the cops but the media. I love how everyone wanted to crucify Henry even though it was just a report that was not official.

That is a bit a too extreme.

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!

#1. Marvin Lewis explicitly stated in the past that he had to draft some talented players with character issues since no free agents wanted to go to Cincy. So, to that extent, Marvin shouldn't complain about players who he drafted and who had prior character issues getting arrested. He had fair warning, acknowledged that he took a risk, and he took a couple of hits on those gambles.

#2. As for the players, if they are engaging in criminal activities, they should never complain about getting busted. As corny as it sounds, if you can do the crime, be prepared to do the time.

#3. Profiling does exist and, while it may make sense to many who are not subjected to it, there are an awful lot of innocent people who get harassed by cops because they fit a "profile." For those of you who have not been subject to profiling, you probably don't think that being singled out, stopped, questioned, and treated like a thug is a big deal. But, I can tell you that many of you (particularly those with right or libertarian leaning political persuasions) would be offended by profiling if you were actually a constant target of police. I'm not saying that profiling, of whatever kind, should always be banned. I am saying, however, that it is easy to enthusiastically support profiling when you are not subjected to it.
