Are We a Contender?

I have a good question during this dead time before tomorrow cuts... Do you think we are with this current roster legitimate Super Bowl contenders? Is so why, and If not what do you think we need?

Honestly I think we could be Contenders especially if Campbell is as good as advertised recently. A D-Line signing would put us over the top. This year for me there is just something about the roster that looks very promising. Out side of the Dline I don't see any big hole with lackluster talent Discuss...

since we are in the weaker NFC i would say yes. But, if we do have one weakness right now it is the lack of rotation on the defensive line but with the roster right now i say we have a chance and if the panthers cut kris jenkins we should pick him up just a little sidebar

Re: Are We a Contender?

To be totally honest, I can't see any proof that we are. My tune could change a few games into the season, but really, the playoffs in 2005 weren't a lot to change my opinion. A lot has changed since and there are far too many variables right now to say anything but 8-8, maybe a little better.

Legitimate Super Bowl contenders??? No.
Not this year. Campbell is a big question mark. Too many unknowns.
Any team can make it to the Super Bowl. But if your talking about legitimate contenders the true SB contenders: Patriots, Chargers, Colts, Seattle, and Chicago.

The day I think we're no longer a contender in May is the day I stop posting 10.77 posts per day. Teams each year come out of nowhere to be contenders.

i would take chicago out of there and maybe seattle too the NFC's top 3 is:

1. I hate to say it but I have to go with the Saints, I hate them but they haven't lost much and picked up a few good pieces to add on i know they lost horn but he was gone for most of last season.

2. Whoever wins the NFC East- the nfl's toughest and most physical division. Whoever comes out of this will definitely be a legimiate super bowl contender.

3. Whoever wins or comes in 2nd beind NO the NFC south- Ever since re-alingment in 2002 the nfc championship has featured one team from this division and who's to say that it wont happen again

Yes!
What we need to have to make it happen is an injury free season and a little luck.

Re: Are We a Contender?

Anyone can win the Super Bowl so everybody is technically a contender, but we have more "ifs" that need to come through for us than a lot of other teams do.

We can win the Super Bowl if Campbell makes the leap, if our offensive line stays healthy, if our defensive line can stop the run, if our secondary can limit big plays, and if our defense can generate turnovers.

I can see us doing very well next season, I can also see us sucking. I think the crux of the question is what chance do the 'Skins have of winning the SB? I wouldn't lay down any money unless I was getting 20-1 or better.

They have to prove a lot to me. Staying healty, consistant, and not getting complacent will determine how we do. We have the talent.

Re: Are We a Contender?

I say we are definately contenders. It is very unlikely because there are so many conditions that would have to be met for us to actually get to the super bowl (or even the playoffs for that matter)
We could win the super bowl if.....
-Jason Campbell is the real deal and has really stepped up his game as much as the reports say he has
-Our D-Line steps up and turns out to be decent
-LaRon Landry turns out to be a stud and impact player his first year
-Shawn Springs stays with the team and stays healthy and good
-Carlos Rogers or (maybe and) Fred Smoot step up their game
-Rocky McIntosh turns out to be a solid LB, or Marshall has a good year
-Brandon Lloyd is utilized much more effectively, and is much more productive
-Our running combo of Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts fills out its potential and is a destructive force
-Sean Taylor regains his ability to play the pass real well
-Santana Moss stays healthy and good
-Carter continues on the momentum that he had at the end of last year
-Injuries do not screw our team

So basically, I change my answer to no because all these things will not happen, but if they do, then we have a shot. We also might have a shot if all the other teams get food poisioning before every game we play.

Re: Are We a Contender?

Everyone is a Super Bowl contender. Thats just how the wonderful NFL is these days. But, I can't say we are a serious contender. So much is riding on JLC and Grilliam's defense improving. Those are two HUGE "ifs," in fact they are just about the biggest "ifs" a team can have. We could get there, but there are too many question marks at this point to say we are serious contenders.

So, who thinks we are playoff contender? Wildcard? Divsion Champ? Can we make it to the NFC title game?

(Don't forget we were only a few points away from being there just two years ago)

Re: Are We a Contender?

I think if everything falls into place at the right time, then we have to be playoff contenders. Comparing the 2005 season, to the season just past, both teams share a large percentage of the same personnel. We improved the D, and have upgraded the O, as we are in the 2nd year of the 700+ page Offense, so I think we are SB contenders......on paper

Re: Are We a Contender?

Super Bowl or bust for me, as always. Really no reason not to have the highest of hopes. I've learned to handle disappointment.

I always like to compare us to that ridiculously lucky Giants team that made it to the SB in 2001(?). If they could make it then, we can make it now.

GMScud 05-31-2007 04:35 PM

Re: Are We a Contender?

I have a lot of confidence in our offense. I think the rushing attack will be close to the best in the league, and that will only open things up for the passing game. It's all about defense. If they play well, then we are playoff caliber for sure. Super bowl contenders?? No.

offiss 05-31-2007 05:01 PM

Re: Are We a Contender?

I beleive we will, if our d-line can play legitamately which we have to believe they will [according to the coaches there were a lot of health issues last season], with the new additions I think we can be a pretty good defense.

As for the offense? I think we will be leaps and bounds over anything we have had since Gibbs return, this season will prove just how awful Brunell has really been, Campbell doesn't have to play like a pro bowler but he will make plays, and he will hang in the pocket and look downfield with the arm to get it fown field without making the ball look like it was punted, we never had that with Brunell, opposing defenses will now have to respect that ability which should allow more room to run the ball as evidenced when Campbell stepped in last season and betts reeled off 6 100 yd games in a row. In all we should finally put a legitamte offense on the field with Campbell, which in turn will keep our defense fresh.

Re: Are We a Contender?

I believe that our problems last year were Lack of chemestry on offense, and injuries on defense. Our team is one year removed from the playoffs. I believe that we have the capability of being a solid playoff team if those issues are fixed, but we are still a little way off from being a Superbowl threat.

Re: Are We a Contender?

hell yeah i think were a huge contender

RobH4413 05-31-2007 08:10 PM

Re: Are We a Contender?

I think the biggest question this year is how our defense can hold up.

GW needs to prove last year wasn't a fluke. All this faith in our defensive line needs to be well merited. Our secondary has to show up, and stay healthy and that swagger must arrive in full swing.

We need that cocky attitude, a certain "je ne sais quoi", that's french. (Theismann, anyone? never mind).

Prediction - If we can produce turnovers like the second half of 2005 consistently throughout the season... we go 11-5. From there it's anyones guess.

GusFrerotte 05-31-2007 10:47 PM

Re: Are We a Contender?

Too early to say man!!!!!!! To many variables and BIG FAT IFS regarding this team. Will Lloyd and Randle El be able to get the ball more? Will Washington be like his old self? Will Rocky be true starter calibre? Will a rested and healthy D line be able to finally get a pass rush. Will Landry truly be able to help in the pass rush dept? And most importantly, is JC the real deal, or is all this great talk about him working hard in the offseason going to end up nothing but a lot of hot air.

I agree that almost all of the above must happen if we are to be contenders and also that that's not likely to happen.
It's very likely that Lloyd will not step up, Portis will be injured and ineffective, the DL will continue to be a problem for lack of a stud, and weak side linebackers, as well as Smoot, will be ineffective.
I also worry that Moss' weak stats last year are more reflective of his ability and attitude than were his stats of a couple of years ago.
No, I don't think we'll be a contender for the Super Bowl and will probably fail to make the playoffs.
At this point, I have very little faith in management. It still seems absurd to me that we didn't address obvious problems on the DL, inspite of statements from management to the effect that poor sack totals were caused by poor coverage in the secondary.
It sounds to me like somebody's excuse to pick up Landry

Re: Are We a Contender?

lets just hope we can be NFC East contenders this year....

our D-line is horrid, im not going to sugar coat it, we will struggle with it all year. we knew it was bad but yet made no adjustments, not through the draft or free agency.

Re: Are We a Contender?

Since I am posting at 2AM on a thursday nite, u better believe we are contenders. Every team starts with a clean slate and given the fact that we haven't made any huge mistakes this offseason, i'd say we have just as good of a shot as anyone. If i had to make a prediction though I'd say wild card berth with maybe a playoff victory.

Good one, took me a second to catch it.

Since everyone in the division made the playoffs last year but us, I'm going to have to say no. I do think we'll be improved defensively, the additions we made in the secondary should free us up some blitzers up front. But JC is still young and learning, Portis and Moss are already hurting, ah screw it, hell yeah we're contenders. Run, run, run with Portis and Betts, play action to Moss, and find a way to get Randle El loose and we're in the hunt!

We are a defensive improvement and a major offensive variety away from being a contender. Not this year, neither next.

Rams!!!!!!!!!!! really dont even see them winning the division or making the playoffs. The Bears had their chance two years in a row and they f**ked up both times. The NFC championship will be

Then again, once their in the 12 team tournament, Carolina has just as good a chance to come out of the crapshoot as the 8 other teams that play WC weekend do.

The Bears will be good again, but even if they win their division, a return trip to the SB is unlikely to say the least. Not that they aren't the most qualified team, but the field is really, really large.

I like St. Louis' defense this year to take the big leap foward (and thats the key to this pick). Couple that with an MVP season from Bulger, a great, consistent performance from Jackson, and the explosiveness of Holt, and you have my 2007 NFC Super Bowl pick.

Arizona is a darkhorse. Leinart will be everything for them that JC will be for us and more.

Arizona is always a darkhorse and every year they mess up. But my NFC super bowl pick is the Redskins and the NFC goes as follows

Seedings

1. Saints 12-4
2. Redskins 12-4
3. Seahawks 11-5
4. Bears 10-6
5. Panthers 10-6
6. 49ers 9-7

Wild Card
3. Seahawks 28
6. 49ers 21

4. Bears 20
5. Panthers 34

Divisional Round

1. Saints 24
5. Panthers 28 Panthers beat the Saints for the 3rd time in that season

2. Redskins 35 Redskins get revenge at Fed Ex field for the 2005 playoffs
3. Seahawks 17

NFC championship game

Redskins 31 Clinton Portis has a huge game and rushes for 3 TD's
Panthers 10
