Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
My wife has just now started getting super obsessed with Facebook and it really drives me up the fucking wall. I'm just wondering if I'm in the minority here when I say that the whole thing is just a way for people to feel good about themselves.
"I have THIS many friends!" "Look! So-and-so wrote a nice comment about me!" Assholes and dumb chickenheads I THOUGHT I was all done with in high school are all of a sudden finding her and wanting to talk. She just eats it up because it's definitely got to be good for the ego. As far as I'm concerned, if you KNOW me and you are my FRIEND, you have either my cell phone or AIM. That's all. |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
I hate it. It's also a way to get involved is some VERY shady activity. There are a ton of s*xual nuts out there that use those sites to find partners.

Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
It's kinda dumb, but I actually signed up for facebook. It's a good way to see a lot of pics of friends and see what they are up to on a daily basis. You can email or talk on the phone, but it's nice to have everything on all one page. And facebook is like myspace, without all the molestors.

Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
If you are out of High School and are on these web sites, you better check yourself there is good chance you are a dork.

You might think so, but a healthy majority of recent college grads are on a myspace, facebook, etc. type page (including many on this site). People who graduated from college in the mid-90s might think its lame, but most people who graduated from college between 2000 and 2007 have either a myspace, facebook, or similar web page. And, mredskins, what's the difference between frequenting a site like this, and keeping in touch with long-distance friends on a site my facebook? |

Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
While MySpace has its numbers of teeny-boppers, emo-driven blogsters and sexual predators, such a cyber-world does have its advantages. An open community like MySpace allows for networking, especially for musicians. What's the easiest way for someone to get their music heard to millions? Put their music on MySpace... MS even has billboards for top artist hits that are signed to major, indie or no label whatsoever. In fact, Lily Allen started her singing career on MySpace- and its catapulted her into stardom.
For most of us, it's an easy way to reconnect with our old pals and remember birthdays. |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
I like facebook, but not myspace. As a college student I find it convenient to organize big parties and events. Obviously that is not how I keep in touch with everyone, but it can help at times. Myspace is overloaded with high school and middle school losers.
Of course there is a limit of everything, and there are people obsessed with facebook, and it actually lowers their grades which is sad. Personally, I might check it once or twice a day, not more than 10-15 minutes a day. Isn't your wifey too old for facebook TMC? |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
i am pretty sure over 90% of college kids have a facebook. I don't know a single student at maryland without a facebook. I am sure there are quite a few that don't but i really can't think of anyone i know, that I am sure, that doen't have one. There are the people who are facebook whores and use it too much but its a simple way to stay in touch with people. Organizing events are a lot easier too. Facebook is meant for college students more than high school students too.

Um maybe for MySpace but not for facebook. From my personal experiences and those from my female friends, I havent heard of sexual nuts. But there are stalkers. But again, aren't there always stalkers? |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
Also there are tons of privacy settings on Facebook, so I dont know why some students(mainly girls) bitch about stalkers. You can set your profile so that only your friends can see it. And beyond that you can also accept someone as a friend and still prevent them from seeing pics, etc. so I dont really see what the problem is.

Um that isnt true. Majority of college students are on facebook. See BSB's post for clarification. |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
I don't have a myspace. I don't see any reason for it. It seems much more wierd than facebook does. Facebook is more clean and seems to be more private with real friends being "online friends". Facebook is less sketchy too. I don't really hear of people talking about myspace that much.
Facebook is to myspace as Thewarpath is to extremeskins---i don't really know why that is but it sounds right. Facebook can be stalkerish too but most the girls i know limit their profiles so only friends can see them. I am pretty sure myspace does that too but facebook is less of a global community and more of a local community. Regardless of privacy settings people can't see people in other 'networks' unless they are friends. I can't see someone in the UNC network becaues i am in the UMD network, unless we are friends |

Haha couldnt have come up with a better analogy myself. Well done lol. |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
I'm along the lines of TMC. I'm pretty easily accessible, email, AIM, phone. My wife has a myspace page to keep up with friends...she doesn't spend enormous amounts of time on it, but it's an easy way to keep up with people for her. I just don't have the time for stuff like that...

That's what I'm sayin' about it. I just feel like anyone who is so casual of an acquaintance that I'm only going to talk to them via MySpace or Facebook is too casual of an acquaintance to put any energy into that relationship. That might be the cynic in me, but really, I don't have, need or want relationships with a hundred people who are going to be pissed off at me if I don't, "Answer their comment..." |

Must just be me then. When I had a myspace page I got emails from the craziest people.... |

those are spammers |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
I have a myspace page but I don't spend much time on there at all. It's nice to find old friends, I've gotten in touch with 5-6 old school buddies since signing up so it's not bad in that respect.

Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
Why isnt there a 'thewarpath.net' facebook group? Seriously. Someone should get on that.

Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
The one nice thing about MySpace is that a lot of really stupid people post a lot of really dumb "tell all" accounts of their weekend...like my 16 year old half sister who included my wife (yeah, she has a page) on as a friend. Unbeknownst to her, I read some of these accounts of parties and going someplace that's not where mom and dad think she is. Some of the stuff she wrote had my jaw dropping all the way down to the basement. So, I saved and printed the webpages for future use. The material I have could have her grounded for life + 20.
By the way, I guess I don't think she's stupid (straight A student), just making some incredibly stupid decisions. Lesson #37, folks: Don't write anything down in cyberspace that someone can use against you. |

ok me too |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
I use myspace much like I use this forum. Just to talk to people. Working at night with no coworkers can get boring.

Yup. The Wall Street Journal ran a story a few months ago about how employers are starting to run searches of young job candidates on myspace, facebook, etc. Apparently, a healthy minority of candidates are screened out of the hiring process based on their web pages. |

I'd make the group and invite you guys...but I dont know who you are.

I watched the movie about the guy who invented Facebook Friday night but I feel a sleep and missed 90% of the movie.

Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
The Social Network is a good flick
|
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
It seemed good but I had thrown back about 6 drinks and just ate dinner when we cut it on. That combination does not work to good when trying to watch a movie. I did go to see the play Thomas and Friends with my daughter and did not fall to sleep Saturday morning.

Hate them both. I refuse to join the idiocy.

Actually it was very good, watched it Sat. night. I think there are some conflicting opinions in this thread vs. the other facebook thread. Some folks hating on it in 2007 are mainlining it in 2011. |
Re: Facebook and MySpace: Hate it or love it?
What a difference 3.5 years makes! I probably gave in a year or so after my post in this thread. I probably spend 20-30 minutes a day on average on Facebook, between getting updates on Digsby and my Blackberry and signing in. It's a nice daily distraction.
