What does everyone read?
 

What are your favorite books? Who are your favorite authors? Have you read any good books recently?

I just finished reading "Lonesome Dove" by Lary McMurty. It may be the best book I've ever read. It's very long, so some people get turned off by it for that reason, but once you start it's hard to put down. It won the Pulitzer Prize, I highly recommend it.

Aside from the Internet babble, Maxim, Playboy, ESPN The Magazine, and the Sunday Paper. I'll read a book here and there, but too infrequently.

I don't like books. If I want fictional tales, I'll watch movies. And if I want to find out more about something in the non-fiction realm, I don't want to read a whole book. I'll read articles and stuff instead.

I read periodicals, mostly online. Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Bottom Line, Forbes, Time, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and some other stuff here and there.

My favorite author is [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Palahnuik"]Chuck Palahniuk[/URL], who's first book was Fight Club. I obviously picked that one up because of the movie but I've been obsesses with his writing ever since. His books can be philosophical as well as disturbing. It's funny because a lot of his books read almost like 200 page epic poems because he will frequently use the same type of verses over and over. I've heard that his writing has made people vomit and/or pass out during some of his public readings, so there's that.

I also just recently read both "Dexter" books by a guy named Jeff Lindsay. If you've ever seen Dexter on Showtime you know the basic story of the books (a serial killer that works for Miami PD forensics and only murders other killers); the books were a good quick read.

Basically I'm a huge movie guy, so I basically started reading the books that my favorite movies are based on. This isn't always the case, but sometimes it's a good way to start reading a good author.

Pretty much the same here. The only thing I read regularly is the WSJ and usually the Washington Post, sometimes The Economist.

Lately though I have been reading books on different people in politics.

The Economist, that's a real good one. I don't read that many articles in that one, but the ones I have read have been excellent. They have some of the best analysts out there.

Definitely. It's good for statistic junkies or political junkies or just run of the mill joe that want's to read a good meaty article.

My favorite book ever was "where the red fern grows" but i dont read books like that so i would say Sports Illustrated and ESPN the magazine basically anything that has to do with football and basketball

This will come to no suprise to most of you but I read my Bible everyday nowdays. I've been consentrating back with the 4 Gosples. I figure Jesus was only around 33 years, only preached and taught 3 of those and never wrote anything down. I love reading his Words from people that were with Him and knew Him. I love Bible quotes and I now love His even more.

I figure when a subject or situation comes up and Jesus says something about it I'll start there with my answer searching.

If any of you wants a Bible and does not have one I will buy one and mail it to you for Free.

Recently I have been getting more into philosophy. I am reading "The Story of Philosophy" by Will Durant. It's a very interesting read.

WSJ and The Economist are both must-reads for me.

My two favorite books ever are The Toothpaste Millionaire and Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation Around the Globe. Just recently finished Manhunt: The 12 Day Hunt for Lincoln's Killer, which was really good. Right now I'm skimming through Overthrow, about the United State's history of "overthrowing" foreign governments.

I joined something called booksfree.com recently, it's sort of like a NetFlix for books. Saves me money and time. I do love going to the bookstore though, I could spend hours there.

I have some philosophy books left over college and I've been meaning to either re-read or read some of them for the first time.
The only problem is I have a bunch of existentialism books and they'd probably fly right over my head at this point. I'm pretty sure I've gotten significantly dumber since graduating.

because of the limited time i have, all my reading is about politics. i still read all the status quo magazines. like sports ill, maxim, stuff, people, etc.

I never took a course in philosophy in college which I regret. I'm starting to really like it and I'm particularly fond of Baruch Spinoza.

SGG might have a better answer since he went to law school and he's probably more familiar with law schools overall, even though he didn't go to AU. I know that AU's Washington College of Law has a good reputation, particularly for Int'l Law.

I need to read more Kurt Vonnegut. I read Slaughterhouse Five a few years ago and really enjoyed it, and I have Cat's Cradle but I've never gotten around to reading it.

Of the books I have actually read, which have mostly been for school-related stuff, The Catcher in the Rye is the one that really stands out in my mind as the most memorable book.

I actually took a Shakespeare class in college to fulfill my literary course requirement, and I really dug some of that stuff. Henry VIII, The Taming of the Shrew, and MacBeth were excellent.

I also liked One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Lord of the Flies a lot.

And then there were kids books, there was an author named Matt Christopher who wrote a book about just about every sport there was. I LOVED "The Kid Who Only Hit Homeruns." You can imagine what it was about. There was a kid, and all he did was hit homeruns. He was my hero in 4th grade!

An author I really hate? Nathaniel Hawthorne. When I read The Scarlet Letter, I was getting so pissed at how thick his verbage was. I had a hard time wading through his diction.

Yeah, but I read Choke about 5 years ago and I have trouble remembering it now. I've been thinking about re-reading all of his books.

Fight Club was my favorite but I also really liked Diary.

I like Chuck's books but they are kind of hard to follow at times.

It's not like his other books because he works in a bunch of his short stories, but they are supposed to be written by the characters in the book itself. There are also a ton of main characters, who all use pseudonyms, so that's hard to keep track of.
Maybe I'll give that one another shot because I don't have anything else to read right now.

I read everything by Richard Laymon, he's a horror writer, like the only author I've gotten into, kinda funny though there's always sex in his books and it's usually graphic, but at least I'm reading ha ha

I read lots of nonfiction lately--mostly popular science type stuff. A very cool book is "Stumbling on Happiness"--it sounds like a self-help title, but it's by a Harvard social psychologist. It's all about how bad we are at predicting what we'll like and dislike in the future. Kind of a "Tipping Point" kind of thing (which I also totally recommend!).

Btw, I am a philosophy professor, and I have trouble understanding BOTH Spinoza and existentialism. I am more into Matrix-type stuff--robots, brains in vats, that sort of thing. What's weird is they pay me to read that stuff. (Beats working for a living! ;) )

AU has a good law school and most recruiters for big firms hit G-town, GW, and AU when they are in the DC area. US News' rankings will give you a good idea of what kind of reputation schools have, even though the ranking system is flawed.
