Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

For all the ire that the Redskins draw from the mainstream media, I found myself mulling over this concept following Nick Barnett's arrest.

We can credit Gibbs for being very careful to draft only the highest quality of character guys, but in today's NFL, how rare is it to go 2+ years without a player getting in trouble with the law (Since ST's run in)?

We may be the model citizens of the NFL.

Just some food for thought as the work week begins.

I think it's a definite bonus that we have the majority of our players have shown class off the field. Strong character especially helps, unfortunately, when you go through a tough season off the field like the Redskins endured last season.

However, I think there are a lot of teams that can make that claim really.

now if only our players can not shoot each other in the sack then we would be perfect.

We will never be considered class until we start winning games consistantly.

I do agree that we have pretty upstanding players on our team, but I can say that there are a lot of teams that haven't had players in trouble for 2 + years, so I really don't think that is to unusual.

All that said, we do have a lot of guys that need to grow up. Clinton needs to not share his opinions so much. It usually tends to backfire on him. (I do hope the costumes come back this year though). Smoot needs to stay landlocked. B. Lloyd needs to act like an adult (by the way, I hear he's been great attitude wise this off-season)

Now if he can keep that up for the regular season we should be fine. Brandon Lloydneeds to step it up this year. Another performance like last year will NOT cut it. I want the 2005 Brandon Lloyd.

I don't know if we are the "classiest" team in the NFL. I guess it depends on your definition of classy. But we certainly aren't on Roger Goodell's radar, which is a good thing. I love that our guys stay on the right side of the law. But we really shouldn't applaud that. Has anyone at any of your jobs applauded you for NOT getting arrested for doing stupid shit? These guys are adults, make a ton of money, and are in the public eye representing 52 other players and an entire organization. They should be grateful with their physical/financial blessings and act accordingly. I'm not gonna applaud anyone for doing what normal society expects.

I read somewhere recently, and I can look for the link tomorrow I suppose, that the NFL and its players really don't do much worse than normal society in terms of numbers of arrests and types of arrests. If anything, the league is a reflection of society in general with people getting arrested for drinking and driving, bar fights, domestic disputes. But the cameras aren't focused on most of society.

SS! Surprised you're still awake on a "school night." It's been pretty much Quake and I going back and forth for the last hour.

I hear what you are saying to a degree. Certainly when a player in the NFL gets busted for anything it's news based on the high profile of the league. But I think (and I have ZERO numbers to back this up) that if you take the number of players in the league and divide by the number of arrests/off-field transgressions, it has to be a lot higher than pretty much any other profession. I could be way off, but it just seems like all that money, all that testosterone, the sense of entitlement, and the young age of these guys = more slip ups than normal.

Re: Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

I only really care about class in so much as it relates to winning. I'll take a pack of thugs and Lombardi trophy over some 5-11 choirboys. So while I of course support bringing in character guys, I think that should be a strategic decision and nothing more.

But I think you need balance. I think if you look at the teams that have been most succesful recently - the Patriots, Steelers, and even the Colts to an extent - they have all had some basketcases but a solid enough group of leaders to keep them in check. You don't want anyone bringing shame to your franchise, but you need some wild guys to fire everyone up. I think we negotiated that perfectly in the 80`s.

There is no such thing as the classiest team in the NFL, only teams who have players that are lucky enogh not to get caught when they mess up.

Re: Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

we definitely don't have that perception around the league. i think Taylor is still considered a thug amongst fans around the league. he was facing a DUI and 26 years. Its not like it was some small stuff. He was found innocent so i am not going to hold any of that against him. If you think about him be accused of spitting on Rudy Johnson and the Tampa game where he definitely spit, you have to think of him of an unclassy player. I think taylor has an unclassy name around the league, and a big one at that. I think the past season with no problems have helped that and he is becoming a veteran but any fan of another team still thinks of him as a classless player.

Furthermore, class is not just not getting arrested. Many teams don't have criminals on their team. Class also has to do with the organizational structure of a team, from the top down. I think that the league does not feel our organization handles it players with class. From Archuleta blabbing to espn last year and the lavar fiasco last offseason, I think we are considered an un-classy team. I definitely don't think when people think of the skins they think classy, mostly due to the perception of the way we treat our players.

As far as a fan base, I think we are one of the classier organizations. I would say we are in the top 5. Obviously the Raiders, Eagles, Cowboys are near the bottom

Why of course we are! Now all we need is ol about 11 or 12 wins to go with all the CLASS! Now that will be class, FIRST IN CLASS!

Re: Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

I'm sorry but we are definitely not the classiest team in the league in any sense. I'm not busting on our organization because I do think we should all be proud of the team, but to me there is no indication that we are any classier than most of the other teams.

Sean Taylor has had 2 different spitting accusations (at least one was confirmed) against him. He's also had plenty of run ins with the law. Portis had his stupid ass comments about Vick. We also had the leak problems last year and coaches who wouldn't talk to players or other coaches. Really classy teams don't have these kinds of problems.

Our fans can be just as low class as anyone. I go to about 5 homes games every season and I hear plenty of stuff that make me glad my 10 year sister is back at home. I also see fights at just about every game; usually they're between Skins fans and people rooting for the away team, but that's not always the case.

And although I disagree with this I'm sure plenty of people would argue that the team's name is far from classy.

yah, i almost got in a fight with a POS stupid bitch at a skins game a couple years ago. Stupid arguement that went too far.

I think a lot more goes into being 'classy' than just keeping players out of the legal system.

Re: Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

I think the reason we don't get in as much trouble is because the respect the players have for Gibbs. He's not one of those "in your face coaches", and gets along with all the players. The players wouldn't feel like they were in trouble, they would feel like they let him down. In my opinion thats worse.

Oakland Red 06-19-2007 02:10 PM

Re: Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

I think we have players who have been chosen because in part they are good hearted, and that fits with Joe Gibbs, who has a very big heart. The Redskins aren't just looking for players with athletic skills, but players who will be best able to handle adversity, keep their intensity, and play very well together as a team.

Last year things didn't work according to plan, but the situation was complicated. I think we will bounce back, big time, this year.

I'm very impressed with what is being written about the defense for one thing. Gregg Williams is changing and adapting his style and putting more of the emphasis on the players making plays, rather than emphasizing his scheme as much. To me, Williams deserves much praise for making a course correction, and the players deserve much praise for staying together after a difficult period last season, and bringing a lot of enthusiasm to the new season.

Coach Gibbs deserves much praise for changing course with the offseason workout rules, and letting players work out on their own. Many didn't, but they all genuinely had that choice, and that makes all the difference. Doing something because you have to tends to drain anyone of enthusiasm. Doing something out of choice is much more motivating.

I can see all those pre-Super Bowl stories now about how the Redskins changed and what led to our Super Bowl (winning) season.

Skins are only a year removed from a player having to plead out of a felony firearm charge, and barely a month removed from a different player supporting a person's right to run a dog fighting ring. 1.5 years ago, we had a player spitting in the face of an opponent during a playoff game, and last year the skins enjoyed a media frenzy about an anonymous player badmouthing the coaching staff. From a relative standpoint, these issues are not really a big deal (unfortunately), but enough to strip the redskins of any claim to the title of "NFL's Classiest Team"!!

Lets at least make it to the playoffs for a few years straight. I know we can do it. But we have almost no offense. There are a lot of teams that have us beat for that title. But why do we need to be the classiest team. were doing fine the way we are right now.

Re: Are we the Classiest Team in the NFL?

Yeah, it is nice the Skins have been pretty much free from off the field distractions, but with ST's thing last year and now Portis saying politically incorrect things about dogfighting, we can't say we have a squeaky clean image. The Cowboys and Eagles can probably have the same argument for them being the classiest. You don't hear squat about the Patriots either, with the exception Brady had a kid with MS. Moniyghan. The Gmen are pretty quiet also. Only Giant to come close making a splash is Shockey filling the single playboy role. We are up there in the top 10-15 probably, but not #1.

There is a good chance we might not be in the top 10 GTripp with regards to being model citizens. It is unavoidable that a lot of teams will face player indescretions with the law as a disproportional amount of these guys are thugs in the first place. The system in place starting with college recruiting does not put much emphasis on integrity, as it does on how fast a 40 you do or if you have some good hands, etc. The NFL would like you to believe it puts a lot of emphasis on it, but don't let em fool you. Ray Lewis was allowed back with no problem, with the least of his offences was obstructing justice, with all likihood he might have capped that guy himself. Vick is going to beat the charges as there is no solid evidence he was personally involved with the dogfighting, all heresay evidence from shady witnesses. Yeah they act like it matters, but the bottom line is alway the $$$$$$$$$$$ signs.
