Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
FanNation | Truth&Rumors | Cowher secretly planning 2008 return
Supposedly, we're one of three teams he or his "people" have contacted regarding potential opennings in 2008. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Ah, the infamous "league source"
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
He'd be stupid not to contact the Redskins. Gibbs won't be here forever (sad to say) and he'll get paid here and get whatever he wants.
That said, why does this keep being brought up every few months? |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
when he retired there was talk of him taking over after gibbs. I would be happy for this to happen except for the fact that we already have two cordinators that could be coaches and there is no reason to bring in another system. GW should be coach after gibbs as long as he can put up a good defense these next couple years. Saunders and GW would be pissed off. GW would get a million dollar bonus though. This is just a rumor right now. No need to take any substance out of it but the skins will be of talk when he comes back. Danny boy will beat out any offers so why wouldn't the skins be a front runner?

I don't think GW will finish his tenure here. His stock fell a little last year, and if he fields a good defense this season, teams will throw some money at him. The NFL is all about timing and striking while the iron is hot. That being said, my gut tells me Williams won't wait for Gibbs to finish his last year, and another team makes Williams forget about the $1MM clause in his contract. Gregg Blache will eventually take over the defense. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I like the idea of Cowher as HC and Gibbs doing some GM work.
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Blache could draw some serious interest as a head coach very soon.
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I would also like to add that I have seen to many super star cordinators turn out to be bust aka: Norv. Cowher is a proven winner!
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I would only want Cowher if Grimm and the rest of the most recent Steeler SB Champ staff came over. Because I am not convinced it was all Cowher that led to their last Super Bowl team.
The Steelers also do a great job in the draft, something we are just now getting better at. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
WOW, now that one catches my a little of guard, but just a league source, which means nothing.......?
First of all Joe will still be here in 08, I hope. I like Cowler as a coach and all, but at what capacity if something like that were to happen with the SKINS in 08? With that being said when Joe finishes up with the coaching gig, he would be a great fit. I believe he moved down South to....NC I think? Close to DC |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
If Gibbs did happen to step down after this year I have no doubt Snyder would be all over someone like Cowher. But then again, if Gibbs stays on as Team President I'm sure he would have a say in things too.

That argument about the staff or the coach is as old as the chicken or the egg. |

Last off season he could have gotten out of here and maybe the off season before. He chose to stay. I think he will pull it out for one more season, if he is promised the job. Even more, his stock did fall. He was a great D cordinator but 31st in the league won't draw up much interest. Even if he has a top 16 D, teams won't be throwing themselves at him. He'll need to have a top 8 Defense to draw the same kind of interest again. We'll be able to keep GW if we want to. But we might not want to. He didn't do well in buffalo and if the defense is in the bottom half of the league again, i don't see snyder passing up on an opportunity to get a coach liek cowher. Also, if we want cowher we will get him. Its up to Snyder. |

IF Joe wanted to step down after this season....? To spend more time with family issues, etc. and remain Team President which would be great if he decided to step down as HC, I could not right at this moment think of a better fit than BC. I'm not so sure about the Owners thinking behind GW, and AS I don't think would be in the mix for HC. I certainly like Cowlers coaching attitude and style. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I don't see Joe stepping down unless it's for serious health reasons.

Remember, Cowher won year in and year out... his staff was always being pulled to be head coaches, his players were gone to free agency, and Bill RARELY missed the playoffs. Your crazy thinking he only did it because of Grimm. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Cower's whole philosophy is so close to Schotenheimer's. Would Danny really want that again?

Cowher was Marty's coordinator before becoming the Steeler head coach. Danny wants big name coaches and winners.... Cowher is both. :coach: Bring on BILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :towel: |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
ill say the same thing i say every couple of months, when this is brought up, i would love to have bill cowher coach the redskins
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Forget GW and forget Al. You a proven winner in Bill Cowher! For years he played smash mouth football and won. Run the ball and play good defense. Isn't that what we did when we went to the playoffs two years ago? Why wouldn't we want that? Not to mention, cowher won a ring with less talent then other teams. Big Ben...lets get real.

Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Gibbs won't quit. He'll play out his contract.
Gibbs won't quit. He'll play out his contract.
I hope your right hess. But whenever that time comes wether it's the end of this season or next season, two max. Hopefully he might consider moving up to full time President/GM, but I think only time will tell, and this season will have alot to do with that descission, no repeats of 06. If something gosh aweful like that were to happen (WHICH BY THE WAY I DON'T THINK SO....I SEE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR) he might have a belly full! I think BC would be a fine replacement at that time. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I dont think there is a better replacement for Gibbs than BC the only other person other than GW and BC i can see running this team is Russ Grimm... other than that i have NO IDEA who else out there we would consider worth going after (Pete Carroll?)
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
"League Source"...yeah right. Even if this is true that the Redskins have already started talking to Cowher, it would be the biggest show of "no confidence" in Gibbs from the organization. And that same message would be received by the players.
I just do not see that happening. Training camp has not even started and the organization is already talking about a new coach for '08? How much sense does that make? I don't believe a word of that article. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
i like cowher. good, successful coach...
but for some inexplicable reason, i'd prefer to not have him in DC. maybe it isn't even the preseason, but still... no cowher! |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Unless our D is stellar like in "05 Williams isn't going to be such a hot commodity. He already had a crappy short tenure at Buffalo, so he has that hanging over his head. Cowher is a proven winner, still relatively young and the guy that can get us to the promised land. I love coach Gibbs, but when he did come back I know it wasn't going to be for that long. Either way I see coach taking a hike after this season. If we don't make the playoffs, he will split as he does not have the time for a longer rebuilding process, and if we do make the playoffs he can retire vindicated. Saunders might get pissed, but if we falter this season again offensively, he can take that 700+ and go somewhere else. Gibbs offense thus far is way superior.
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
A guy like Cowher is going to be in very high demand in NY and Cleveland next year after they jettison their dud- head coaches. Given that demand and his leverage over the market, I suspect Cowher is going to want full control over football decision making, which leaves no room for Gibbs or Cerrato. He'll also likely want his own staff and to switch to a 3-4 defense which he used for his entire tenure in Pittsburgh. Do we really want that much turmoil and turn-over in the coaching staff AGAIN?
Personally, I think BC is a fantastic coach, I just don't want to have to sit through 2-3 rebuilding years and new systems, especially if we improve to a 10+ win team this year why blow it all up? I'm with the naysayers...stay inside the organization if Gibbs leaves and provide some kind of continuity if at all possible. |

Whatever dude. Say what you will, but it is a discredit to Gibbs if the organization let something like this leak out, if they are indeed talking to Cowher. Some guys just see that Dallas helmet on my sig and instantly want to take a stab, when I have said nothing to cause offense. |

There is now way we should be talking to Cohwer or anybody else right now. I have all the faith in the world in Gibbs and hope he stay’s as long as he want’s. Your right about your sig though. It does make me want to take stabs at you. All in good fun of course.:duel: :dallas: |

After looking at the link at the bottom, it says PFT.com......total shit! Somebody farts and they report it as news or rumor. After looking at the source I truthfully don't put one ounce of merit in this BULLSHIT RUMOR! Still like BC....as a coach of any team. But this is JUNK! |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
He's not coming here. It won't happen.
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
Never know Skins, there could be some merit to it. BC might have just needed a break from Pittsburgh, or saw that the party was coming to an end there. Coach Gibbs is probably going to step down soon and Williams already had a failing grade at Buffalo. Of course he is more loaded here, but still, not sure he is HC material. Don't know about Saunders either. His first year offense sucked. Gibbs offense was great, wide open etc during Gibbs I. Wish we could go back to that.
|
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
A denial doesn't mean much, just means they don't want the issue to become public if it was true. I for one hope that they are at least thinking about it. I don't think our asst HC's are good candidate material.

As for the reality of Cowher and his return to the NFL. One, lets consider his salary that he will be looking at. Probably somewhere in the 6 to 7 mill per year range. There are only about 5 or 6 teams in the league that can afford a coaches salary that is that high....and three of those teams are in the NFC East. Washington, Dallas and Philly. If there is any truth to this (which I highly doubt) than I would not be surprised to see Cowher roaming the Washington sidelines in '08. |
