Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
John Clayton just did a segment on ESPN News, where he reported that Sean Taylor went from 228lbs to 212lbs. Clayton said that he did this in hope to improve his speed to become more of a "centerfielder" type of safety, and team officials say that Sean is now running a 4.5 forty due to the drop in weight. Now the question is will this hurt his hitting abilty? I doubt it.

He will still pack a load, but will he be able to hold up for 16 games? He's about due to knock himself out anyway. |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
Are you kidding. This kid is gonna be moving so fast, the fools running trying to cross the middle will think they were hit by a train!
He's gonna LAY HEAVY LUMBER! |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
He'll be just fine. He just needs to play with more disipline
|
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
This concerns me because now he's the weight of a CB, and if he hits like he normally does, he won't make it 16 games...injuries will occur, and frequently. I hope I'm wrong. we need him for 16 games + the playoffs + the super bowl!

Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
Looks like he gave that weight to Brandon Lloyd. I think Sean Taylor is awesome and I love watching him knock the snot out of other receivers. However, it seemed like there have been a few times where, had he been just a split second faster, he could have actually made a play on the ball (interception) as opposed to a hard hit on what was a first down catch anyway.

I am hoping that is he is trying to "evolve" into the ronnie lott type player where he wasn't always looking for the big hit, but would take it if it presented itself. Lott went after the ball, plain and simple...Taylor can be a Lott type player if he wants to. |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
This is a great sign. It shows that Sean is ready to assume the role that G-dub has laid out for him. Why would this make him injury prone? If anything he is probably in better shape than ever.
It sounds like he will be thinking ball first end career second. He is going to have a break out year! |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
It won't hurt his hitting ability. Hitting is all about attitude, and I don't see Taylor ever not playing the game at 110mph.

Sean Taylor will be a beast either way. His speed will be just like in college when he was 220lbs. |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
4.5 that's not that fast. I'm pretty sure he can run a sub 4.4

He has run a sub 4.4. He ran a 4.37 his senoir year at Miami. He just got bigger and lost some of it. I hope he has gotten it back. |

It is faster than 90% of the WRs in the league. Most of the CBs too. |

Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
This is great news. It looks like Sean Taylor put in some serious offseason work, which shows a strong committment to the team. I'm no physics major but I doubt the 16 lb drop in weight will affect his hitting ability all that much since his speed has increased. There have been plenty of durable, hard-hitting light weight players in the NFL.

Well, I was a physics major, and I can tell you that velocity is more important that mass when determining the kinetic energy in an impact. Energy increases proportional to mass but as the square of velocity. E(kinetic)=.5m(mass)x V(velocity)^2 I wasn't a physiology major, however, I am guessing that the lighter weight will make him more, not less durable. Less weight on his knees and ankles when running and less mass to accelerate when making cuts generally leads to increased joint durability, which is usually what brings these players down. That and neck injuries which is more of a technique issue. I'm excited most of all for the committment it shows from Sean, to go that route in order to improve the team, even after knowing we went and got another safety at 6. |

Could not agree with you more! 100%! |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
I think Taylor was probably hovering closer to 232 lbs+, but we won't split hairs. Taylor seems to be one of those guys that will have a fairly injury free career, so I'm not worried too much about durability.
But if he was a heat seaking missle before, what does this make him now? |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
At times last year Sean did look just a tad slow on certain plays. Perhaps he recognized this, and took it upon himself to shed a few in order to increase his speed. I don't think it will affect the way he plays the game because he only goes at one speed....
|
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
^^ yeah that is what i was thinking. Its about 20 pounds either way. Now it has to be seen how much faster he actually got before we can determine his hitting force. I mean, if he didn't get that much faster to compensate for his loss of wieght then he will be a lighter hitter. The reason Taylor is a big hitter is because he suspends himself in air and flys at the ball carrier. He doesn't lose anything in translation. He puts his body on the line when he hits the receiver. Lets hope his weight doesn't cause injuries for him.
He doesn't need to be the biggest hitter in the league. I still think he will be but being a ball hawk is more important. Can you imagine a 4.35 Landry next to a speedy taylor? |

Taylor is normally coming with such velocity that 20 lbs. shouldn't make much of a difference at all. If anything, it might help because he'll be coming harder and faster. Ed Reed isn't huge, but he still lays the wood like no other. |

I also noticed his speed to be a bit slow last year. Like that lucky td against the Eagles he had the angle but missed the tackle due to not having the speed. Taylor is showing some very impressive qualities this offseason. I think this weight drop is excellent news for Redskin fans. This added speed and quickness will translate into more turnovers. Do we really need Taylor going for the hits or do we need the ball? I love the hits but we drafted him for his interception ability along with other things. The hitting is great but its not winning games for us. He will still be able to hit when it comes time but the added speed is going to go much further than a hit. I think Taylor should be named Captain of our entire D. He's a leader and its shows in his discipline to his body being the best it can be for the Redskins. Not easy to loose 20lbs in the offseason. Cannot wait to see this defense in action!! |

Well, there's this one part where the bad guys take these hostages and put these bombs on them that are full of these little steel balls, and when it explodes they shoot out everywhere tearing everything to shreads. I think that might be what Sean Taylor is now. |

Good movie. Halle Barry too, right? Yep, that's Taylor alright! |
Re: Sean Taylor dropped 16 lbs.
Well now we can't lay claim to having the heaviest safety in the NFL, but what does that matter?

What... he only weighs 212lbs.... Brandon Jacobs is going to love this. |

I'd still put my money on Taylor against just about anybody when it comes to hitting.

Good point. I was thinking of starting a thread about this actually. Seems like a lot of guys on the team have really taken it upon themselves to come to camp ready and serious about winning. I think Gibbs' "hands-off" policy this spring played a big role in that. It's the whole "treat us like adults, we'll act like adults" concept. We talk about class in another thread. I think this an element of that. Having the class to come prepared to work when it's time to get down to work. |

Taylor losses weight and some say he is too small, Lloyd gains weight and some say he is doping. |

haha. i cant wait for that meeting. i still think ST will knock BJ the f out. on a different note i believe that ST will be more like a ED Reed, who hits very hard and is only 5'11'' and 200 lbs. |

Lacking big name free agents they've decided on the hard work angle. But, Gibbs does seem to have his jaw pretty firmly set. I think he gave them the old, "you guys have embarrassed me for the last time" speech after the Friend leak and they seem to have taken it to heart. I'd give anything to have a transcript of that meeting. At any rate, we can be proud of this team. They seem to be mostly stand up guys. It's going to be a great season. I can feel it. Not the usual feeling of past years which was like when your wife/girlfriend asks if her butt looks big (not at all, sweety), but genuine excitement. |
