Teen Loses Feet In Six Flags Accident
 

Officials at a Louisville amusement park say both of a teenage girl's legs were severed above the ankle while on a thrill ride at the park.

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg says the accident happened around 4:45 p.m. Thursday on the Superman Tower of Power.

As bad as this is, those rides are still very safe. Your son is in more danger riding in a car to the park then getting hurt at the park.

Agreed. It would be one thing if this had happened to some dumb adult who did some dumb stunt but it's not. A young woman had her life horribly altered in the blink of an eye. She and her family, through no fault of their own, are now faced with overcoming an unforseen and crippling disability. Hopefully, they will be up to the challenge.

Although I oppose banning of thought for any number of reasons, I do think a little more personal restraint would be appropriate. Before you pun, please put yourself in this young woman's or her family's position. There, but for the grace of god, go you or I.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the young woman and her family.

If we are mundane in our concern, it only shows that we are not self-centered and uncaring individuals.

There so much in this world to lambast, lampoon and laugh at (Bush and Clinton provide a LIFETIME of fun), that, IMHO, to do so to and at the expense of a young woman's unearned tragedy is unneccesary and cruel.

1) I don't believe in karma.

2) Yes I'd be very upset if it happened to my daughter.

3) This is the perfect example of people taking a joke too seriously. Just because I make a pun, does that necessarily make it a fact that I'm not sad for the victim?

4) Sometimes the Warpath just needs a good kick in the ass.

5) If there's one lesson to be learned here? Keep your head out of the clouds and your feet on the ground!

This is an interesting question. Is it in bad taste to fool around about a subject like this when the aflicted we surely never read it? On one hand the reason it is considered in poor taste is because of the insensitivity towards the victim and how their feelings would be rightfully hurt. So by that logic, assuming they would never read it, it really isn't all the bad to do. On the other hand there is the thought that something like this should not be made fun of since it was random and could have happened to anyone and making jokes shows a more general insensitivity. Not sure which way I fall on that.

Why do people think it is bad to make jokes? Not a challenge but pure curiosity to help me settle my thoughts on it.

In part, b/c (I believe) I am familiar with your general feelings on "doing the right thing", I was particularly surprised by the posts.

Unforseen and unearned personal tragedies, however, strike me as not the appropriate subject for such a purpose. Also, you never answered my question: What would your response be to those who make light of your child's disfiguring accident? At best, you might pass it off as strangers being jerks. In which case, how's it feel to be a jerk?

As for the comment that it is unlikely that this girl or her family would ever read the comment and, therefore, humor at her expense is fine, two thoughts:

1. It's the internet - who the hell knows who is reading this site. Maybe her family or friends are Skins fans and are regular posters here. It's possible. A simple internet rule is that you should asssume that your public posts WILL be read by the subject of your post.

2. Would it change your attitude if, after posting a pun, the search engine showed a thread title "Please Pray For My Neice" and it was about this young woman? If so, why? Is okay to be callous towards those we don't know?

Finally, there probably does come a time when it is appropriate to joke about tragedy - but (generally) that time frame is for the subject of the tragedy to determine. My quadrapalegic cousin and I used to joke about how she made a great second base woman. SBF has consistently shown that he has overcome, accepted and moved past his injury and constantly uses humor to reassure of these facts.

Humor and tragedy have there place. But so do respect and concern.

Assume for the moment that the girl, her family, her friends, other children on the ride who witnessed the accident, their families or their friends (starts to add up doesn't it?) will NEVER read any of this. I would suggest that does not change the inherent cruelty of the remark: A disfiguring accident happened to an innocent person and someone else laughed at it. I don't have to look up the definition of "cruel" to believe that behavior falls within its parameters.

It is absolutely okay to make jokes appropriately. Humor can be great medicine in overcoming trauma. When offered by a victim, it is an excellent way of reassuring those concerned for the victim that they (the victim) are getting better (e.g. - some of SBF's comment about his leg). In this case, however, the humor was not created out of concern or kindess for the girl but, rather, as I said above, as a way to laugh at another's misfortune.

IMO, an overly general statement but useful - While people may be overly sensitive and "politically correct", does that mean the opposite approach is perfectly acceptable? Shouldn't there be a middle ground? Don't some things merit respect, concern or gravity? The mere fact that the concept of being "sensitive" has been overplayed does not mean there are no things to which we should be sensitive.

One more thing, just to be clear, I thought Schneed's remarks were cruel. I am also absolutely certain that they were not offered with cruel intentions.

She has an amazing and difficult time ahead. The next year will be incredible pain and work in healing. Her mind will at some point greave for her lost body parts. I hope and pray she has a great support group around her. I leaned on the Lord and my family.

My first reaction was that I would be back to "normal" in no time flat. It's been 10 years and my normal is wonderful in it's own way but NOTHING like normal was.

I put on a poker face for my family that was positive and ok. I guess I'm so stupid I actually believed it and it got me through.

The first person who I felt knew where I was coming from was the guy that made my first leg. He had all his stuff but had a look of compassion that made me feel he knew what I was going through.

I didn't have another Amputee to help me but I think I have motivated a few and like I posted want to help them/me at Walter Reed withe BBQ thing.

SBF I publicly and sincerely apologize, the situation regarding your leg slipped my mind, which is especially dumb because you mentioned it back in like the second post in this thread.

If I can explain, sometimes I feel like the Warpath gets a little dull in the offseason, and cracking some jokes can be a way to kick things up a notch.

But at the same time, the last thing I wanted to do was say something insensitive that would actually hurt you, or anyone, at a personal level. So lesson learned on my part - as has been said by others in this very thread - you never know who's reading.

The jokes were meant to be insensitive and edgy, because I dig that kind of humor. But I didn't fully consider my audience, you in particular. So to you, I apologize.

PS And yes, what JoeRedskin said was correct about me. I'm not actually an insensitive ass like that, and I think most of you know that. I'll bust it out on occasion to spice things up. But here, I clearly crossed into some personal territory.

I have never been on one of those with cables, but I have been on the ones that are air powered.

That really sucks for six flags and the child. This is why amusement parks spends millions of dollars on QA people. I wonder who is going to lose their job over this?
