Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
I need help for an article I'm doing on Hog Heaven. Please rank (roughly) the Redskins offensive line 1-32 with 1 being the best unit and 32 being the worst. Also, please defend your selection.
Thanks for your help. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Are you talking about the Hogs or our current offensive line?
|
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Well Deff. Top 5 i would prob. say #3 I Think only Seattle and Indy MAY have better lines. We finished #4 in rushing and i think #5 in sacks allowed. San Deigo and Denver are up there too.

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
What's the matter? Burgundy Army not good enough for you anymore?
Hard to make an assessment yet. Really need to see how they perform with the new LG |

We're #1 We're #1 Maybe if we say it enough... |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
I don't have any stats, or much objectivity, but I would put the skins at #5. I say they're number 5 because I rank the following teams higher: ATL, SD, KC, PIT. Pittsburgh is questionable, but they could probably be replaced by Seattle.
|
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Current line.
The we're number one!!!!!!11!!! stuff, while encouraging, helps me not at all. GhettoDog is a good example of what I'm looking for. Thanks again in advance. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Will we all get co-writing credit?
|
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
KC has lost will sheilds and willie roaf and havent added anyone no way they are still top 5

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
If you're talking about our current line, I would say top 10, one could make an argument for top 15.
My reasoning for saying top 10 is for obvious reasons: You line up Portis he's a 1300 yd rusher; You line up Betts, he goes over a 1,000 yds too. If you break down the line by position, one could say we're pretty solid at every position. But I just don't think you can have a losing record and at the same time claim an offensive line that's better than 10. When healthy Samuels and Jansen are two of the best in the business. Ditto Randy Thomas. He's not only Pro-Bowl material, but is usually pretty durable. |

Why don't you tell us where you think they rank and then we can debate that? |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Top 5 no doubt.
Last year they were the only line in the league to be in the top 7 in rushing yards and sacks allowed. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Atlanta, Jax, San Fran, and San Diego above us. I'll put KC and Pitt above us for the fact that they have been good for a relatively long time. So... 123456 7
|
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
I'm thinking we are in the top 5. I'm basing that on last years performance. One could say "well we lost Dockery", I never thought he was that great anyway. I'll bet that whoever is in the LG position they'll be at least on the same level if not better than Dockery. I'm thinking Wade will start off the season and I'm hoping Whitticker takes over later in the season so we can have some youth on the line.

I think I'm more inclined to lean toward your ranking, BSB. I would say maybe 8 or so. Again, my main contention is we didn't have a winning record. But I don't have a problem with 7, or 5 for that matter. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
With the lingering problem at LG I would say we are somewhere around 10-12.
This experiment with Wade is not going to work. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
This is being modest, I'll say #6 overall.

I'll disclose the theory I'm writing on later. |

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
GTripp, you might regret asking this question here. You're going to get answers from all over the map. Where do you think they rank?
|
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
I agree, but I would also include the QB

By averaging the responses in this poll, I hope to get a rough estimate of where Redskin fans see their offensive line at right now.

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
I agree, but I would also include the QB
Thats certainly the other significant part of offense. Quarterback varience is very, very great in this league.
Although the production of a QB is very dependant on that of the OL. |

I like the way it sounds because I have always felt that both sides, offense and defense, starts at the line. I still feel the team builds on the line but i would look at it as a team is only as good as its o-line rather than an o-line is only as good as its team it is on. I do agree that we don't have a bad offense outside of the o-line so it is not like our qb's wrs rbs, ect are pulling down our offense. However, it is interesting- i don't think one team i named in the top 7 is top 10 in overall offense. Very int-er-est-ing....hmmm Moreover, I still feel the fact that we weren't top ten in offense is not to say we we didn't(w/ dockery) have a top ten o line. I think it brings up more questions about the functionality of our offense under Saunder more than anything else. Though it was just the first year of the system. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
The offensive line is one of the strengths of this team. Chris Samuels is a perennial Pro Bowler. Randy Thomas and Jon Jansen are worthy of Pro Bowl selections. That makes this group top five. They were able to protect the quarterback effectively and produce two 1,000+ yard runners. The only other offensive lines that are comparable are Indy, San Diego, Kansas City and maybe Denver. There are some honorable mentions, such as New England, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Seattle. The Redskins boasts one of the best lines in the league, definitely the best line in their division.

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Yeah I think that although Campbells numbers weren't that great last year that it can't be blamed on our line rather his inexperience. I think we will get a much improved Campbell this year! Anyway, uhhhhh yeah #6
|
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
No better than top ten. This line has underachieved in years past based on talent. They should have been more dominant and they have not done that. The thing is they have had garbage QB's forever so who really knows? If Campbell is the real deal then I don't doubt the Oline could move up to top two or three in the entire league.
i am quoting myself. For example, New orleans had a great offense but its o-line isn't that great. They are among the worst in yards per rush. But that negates the " an offense is only as good as its o=line" thing. Maybe the QB is by and large the most important thing on an offense |

I don't think we can blame the QBing for the line underachieving. That's just order of football operations.
Is it them underachieving their talent, or is it just a misevalutation of their talent? |

Not saying you're wrong, not saying you're right. Just wondering. Offensive lines are so hard to evaluate on the whole, that were are stuck making assumptions like "good offenses have good lines, bad offenses have bad lines". This sounds good in principle, but we can't be certain its correct. I just have to assume its correct and evalutate accordingly. Redskins line is in the 11-20 range in my mind. But when I'm done with this article, I could have a very different perception of them. That's why I started this thread. |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
Ranking an offensive line is so subjective. Two of the key things to look at though IMO is rushing yards and sacks allowed.
Last year the Skins were 4th overall in the NFL in rushing yards per game (138.5 per game), behind only Atlanta, San Diego and Jacksonville. As far as sacks allowed goes, the Skins were 3rd overall with only 19 sacks given up. Only the Colts and Ravens gave up less. So I was wrong with my first post, the Skins were the only team to finish in the top 4 in these two key categories, not top 7 like I originally said. I'd say it was a very impressive season for the offensive line. Probably more impressive than most people realize. |

I'd say in the top 5. |

Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
I am basing this ranking on where the teams finished the season last year, not overall, but the last day of week 17.
1) Indy (incredible coordination and execution in both pass and run blocking, less power, more technique) 2) San Diego (smash-mouth physical line with a mean streak, excellent in both protection and run blocking) 3t) Redskins (excellent run blocking power, good but not great pass protection) 3t) Jax (very strong line with excellent zone blocking for MJD) 5t) Bears (asked to run-block their way into the Superbowl and they did, pass block just average, but an actual QB would have made them look better) 5t) Pats (consistently excellent pass blockers with better than average zone running schemes - not super powerful) |
Re: Rank our OLine among the 32 teams
If you based it off last year we are the #6 ranked O-Line in the NFL
Indy,Denver,ATL, SD, KC, all were in the top 5...If the LG spot can be as solid as last year look out baby ....... MS |

But when I'm done with this article, I could have a very different perception of them. That's why I started this thread.
Its hard for me to say an o-line isn't good by saying its offense isn't good. I could say an offense that is good has a good o-line though. However, i don't think N.O has a top 5 o-line like its top 3 offense. I can't even say they are top ten. When judging a line I look at - Yards/ attempt (how good it is at opening holes) - Sacks allowed (protection) - Yards/ game (consistancy over a game) - Big yardage running plays (Ability to block upfield) Now many, actually all, of these numbers are dependent on the other parts of the offense. Yards/ attempt- RB, Sacks allowed- QB mobility and awareness, Y/G- RB consistancy and RB depth, BIg Yardage plays- RB ability to allude defenders. N.O is a good example to look at. Nearly 400/game... amazing. O-line- yards/ attempt -3.7 very low, 19 TDs rushing- pretty good, Very few 20+ yard runs- 6, 110 ypg rushing- average. NOw I can't say that this is a top 10 O-line. The onlly thing that will make me even consider that is if they are top 5 in sacks allowed. I don't know the number so... Matty? moreso, i think a lot of how good an o-line is can only be seen on tape. The time in the pocket given to a QB would be a great stat. Average time until a defender gets behind the o-line or the pocket breaks down. That would be the stat of stats. That is why baseball can be fun, stats on everything... THat is the only reason baseball can be fun. :D |
