M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
Paul Woody in the latest Team Report in Sporting News says that Marcus Washington will line up at defensive end in passing situations. Maybe this is old news, but it caught my eye.
That sounds like a great idea, taking advantage of our depth at linebacker, with Marshall or Posey able to take Washington's spot, and giving Philip Daniels more rest to keep him fresh on other downs. [I] Assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams has been talking up the improved play of WLB Rocky McIntosh during the offseason. Now, McIntosh has to show he's ready to start and excel in his second season in the league. McIntosh's performance is pivotal because the team wants to take Marcus Washington out of coverage in passing situations and line him up as a defensive end to rush the passer. McIntosh has to show he can handle coverage in these situations. ... Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
Yeah it's old news, but I agree I like the sound of it. MW needs to be more involved with getting after the passer, he's shown in the past it's something he excels at.

Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
if rocky can play, the skins have four linebackers that are NFL caliber starters
|
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
Hopefully the hip stays in good shape. Light guys like that need to use them to get around the lineman.
|
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
He seems a bit small to do a great job coming off the edge down in 3 point stance.

He's no smaller than Freeney really and it would only be on passing downs where I think they are concerend that his effectiveness could be hampered by the hip. From the reports we've heard Rocky has the athleticism to be great on coverage. We already know Fletcher and Marshall are good in coverage so keeping him in to rush the passer makes a lot of sense to me. I'd rather have those four guys in and either Daniels or Golston out on passing downs. Probably Golston as it sounds like Daniels will slide inside to DT in this situation. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
So is this somehow some sort of indication that the team doesn't like the way he plays linebacker? (the way a lot of people took it when Marvin had LaVar do the same thing)

I really think it is more about looking at the talent we have and realizing that MW is probably a better pass rusher off the edge than everyone except Carter coupled with the fact that we have 3 more than capable LBs for coverage. It is just the best use of talent. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
I think this would likely be in Nickel/Dime situations. We'd simply take out a lineman instead of a linebacker. Makes sense, given our depth.
|
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
This is not a good idea, he is not a D end. It would be smarter to move him around or bring him off the edge with the idea of getting him matched up with RB or TE, not OT. I'm confident this is how G Williams will use Marcus!

Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
Finally!
Reason # 57 why Andre Carter was a bad signing. But this, this is good news. |

Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
He played DE in college and isn't very much lighter than some DEs around the league. LaVar managed 11 sacks rushing from the DE spot, I think MW could be capable of similar results.

Right. Blame the entire horseshit defense on one player. You're the kind of fan that loves Snyder spending money on problems and not signing solid players that stay for years and grow with the team. For you to not think that Andre Carter was a good signing after the way he finished the season tells me you're clueless. |

However, I was never that disappointed in him in the first place. He can't play the run...that makes him just like 90% of all the other pass rushing ends in the league. I like the guy, he's the best end they've had in years...apparently some people would rather the Skins just blitz whenever they need to get pressure and still never get sacks... |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
MW at end in nickel downs is a great idea. He is a fumble maker and will have the quicks - and space wide - to get around the OT.
Great idea. Keeps your best players on the field. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
This would be a lot of fun to watch.

Washington would get eaten alive on running downs. MW at End makes sense in nickel/dime situations - don't they already rush him in their dime package? - on 1st and second? Would wear him down and he would get steamrolled. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
We can second guess player acquisitions/contracts all day long, but in the end these are the players we have so let's find a way to use them the best way possible.
Carter started off pretty weak last year, but finished strong. If he picks up where he left off he might end up looking like a good deal in the end. |

Which is exactly my point. I'm not suggesting they move Washington to defensive end, but Carter is such a liability on rushing downs that I KNOW that Evans or Wynn could do better. And then come an obvious passing situation, we could bump Marcus Washington down. |

I understand that. You actually elaborated on your point very well last offseason. I, however, am of the opinion that having 2 guys who are good ends/can rush the passer very well on the D is a good idea. I too think that the contract for Andre is a little steep, however, I think he will prove to be worth it in the end. |

They may be similar in size but that's it. Freeney is a pure edge speed pass rusher and MW is a strongside LB that plays over the TE. They just have totally different skills. But MW might be the best we have so send his ass. But we have got the address this in the 08 draft. Who on our front 7 scares anyone as far as pass rush skills go? No one. |

True but Carter gets steamrolled too. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
I'm a make this simple I go to Madden 07 for my football ratings and if you change MW position from LB to DE his overall rating is 99. (Madden 08 coming soon) LOL. I've been playing with that roster for months now, I'm glad to see the coaching staff finally caught up......SNYDER GIVE ME A JOB!!!!!!

You don't know how good Washington is going to be at rushing the passer at defensive end, and if he is good, then we can have two good pass rushers instead of one. It will make it a lot tougher for the offensive line.
Carter gets eaten alive on running downs. Which is exactly my point. In the last 5 games, he got more tackles than he did in the first 11. He had 33 in those games and only 23 in the first 11. He also got 4 sacks in those 5 games. |

He is the best pass rusher we have.

I mean he was gettting mauled by Bob Whitfied who retired cause he was 50 years old. Sorry but Carter is terrible against the run. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
It wasn't Carter so much as it was Holdman.

I actually agree. I know we often hear about teams running left at Carter and Holdman, but I distinctly remember games like WAS v. TEN where we were just getting gashed over and over up our gut. I pray our coaches' faith in Montgomery and Golston is well founded. |

CGriff was so ineffective last year. Too banged up I tend to think Golston can be a decent DT but he is never going to be dominant and there will be days when he is up against solid Gs and Cs and he'll get pushed around. Hopefully Montgomery is as good as they think he is. He sounds like someone who can be an anchor in there when Griff finally gives out. I'd love him to pan out this year and Griff stay healthy. Sounds like they'd be a real solid middle line. |
Re: M. Washington at defensive end in passing situations
The beauty of this is we'll find out soon enough if the line was the problem or the LBs and secondary.

I agree, there aren't a ton of D Ends who play the run well. Carter should be disruptive, but there should be linebackers making plays against the run. To hold him entirely responsible for having a poor run defense on his side is asinine. |
