Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
I guess I was just thinking about B.Mitch made me think about Nelms. He was very quietly one of the greatest Redskins in my opinion.
Guy was tough as nails! |

Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
i remember Mike Nelms as being the first great return man the skins had. i think he was a defensive back, but don't remember him doing anything but returning kicks. anyone remember Herb Mul-key? how about Eddie Brown? the skins have had some good return men over the years

Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Wasn't he the guy who had the car wash on 31st and main st?

Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Nelms was the best/toughest returner we have ever had. He did not have the luxury of playing on the talented teams that B Mitch played on. Nelms played on some mediocre redskin teams. He was the only pro bowl player a few years.
Nelms hardly ever fair caught a punt. He would refused During Nelms prime, I remember teams punting out of bounds to avoid giving him the ball. He was instant offense. Nelms was such a vicious hitter on special teams that the redskins used him on goal line Defense as a safety. He would hit so hard that the coaches took him off defense after he injured his shoulder. But while he played on D he was a feared player a la Sean Taylor. |

Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
ah, joeredskin, i stand corrected. i forgot all about speedy duncan
|
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Found this interesting:
Nelms is a three time Pro Bowler in 1980, 1981 and 1982. He led the NFL in yards per kickoff return twice (1981, 1982) and was the Redskins starting punt returner in Super Bowl XVII. In Super Bowl XVII, he returned 6 punts for 52 yards, both Super Bowl records, along with 2 kickoff returns for 44 yards. |
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
GREAT Redskin!! #21. Made the All-Madden team in the early days. Nelms was an amazing return man and Wayne Seviere (sp?) used to figure out new ways of getting him the ball on special teams plays.
|
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
If I remember correctly, Nelms never had a fair catch

Now Dblanch66, there's a name - Wayne Sevier (sp). You talk about a special teams coach! Guys would run through a wall for that coach! The good old days, huh? JohnSevier.com |
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Wasn't he the guy who had a hot dog stand just down the street from the White House. Some of the past Presidents would have the secret service sneak down and get them a few dogs when the first lady wasn't watching.

I believe and I'm stretching the brain cells on this...I think it was that he went an entire season without a fair catch. |

how about nick"the trashcan"giaquinto, speedy duncan, and of course when joe theisman joined the skins in 1974,he returned punts for awhile.if memory serves me right, brian mitchell broke all mike nelm's punt return records.he sucked at reciever as a redskin, but had gibbs kept on coaching, desmond howard and mitchell would have been a really great punt return tandem.anyone remember mitchell throwing that 30 yard across the field lateral to howard that beat the falcons in gibbs last season 1st time around? |

Mitch pretty much made people forget about Nelms...but I gotta tell you, if I had to choose, I'd probably take Nelms although B.Mitch could end up in the Hall. |

nelms was good a few years, mitchell was great every year.i still get pissed off cause snyder and turner cut him to sign mr asswipe sanders.:hater: mitchell should be a first ballot hofamer.the only player that has more total yards combined in the league's history is jerry rice ,and brian mitchell is second.i just hope he goes in as a redskin and not an eagle or giant! |
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
I think most of B-Mitch's issues were actually with Cerrato. Either way, he did re-sign with the Redskins last year (or the year before) and retire a Redskin
Anyhow, greatest Redskins punt returner? Darrell Green. Remember the hurdle? |

Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Great return man!! As mentioned he didn't fair catch very often. Some people actually berated him him for that, not me. When he got the ball you always expected something good would come of it. Very much deserved the 70 Greatest.

I agree. Nelms is the greatest return man I have ever seen in a Redskins uniform. Nelms arrived to the Redskins at the tail end of his career after playing most of his career in the CFL. Nelms only played 5 years for the Skins, but he is still #2 all time return man. Mitchell played nine years on some very talented teams. Their average per return numbers are very similar, B Mitch higher on punt returns, Nelms higher on Kick Off returns. Career Numbers: 1. Brian Mitchell 317 3,476 yards 10.9 avg. 2. Mike Nelms 212 1,948 9.1 Career Kickoff Return Leaders # Name Ret. Yards Avg. 1. Brian Mitchell 421 9,586 22.8 2. Mike Nelms 174 4,128 23.7 |

Those Redskin special teams in the '80's go unnoticed but they were awesome!.. I remember Dexter Manley being on the kickoff team when he was a rookie. He'd haul ass down field and just pummel fools. RIP Wayne Sevier. |
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Yep, alot like B-mitch. Tough motha!
|
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
funny... nelms owned the toyota dealership i work at now, but he sold it to us in february, but I see him from time to time... he was in on tuesday as a matter of fact.
nice guy as far as I can tell... hes always smiling and talks to everyone, even the cleanup guys, and doesn't talk down to anyone... |
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
Nelms was a tough guy out there but so was B mitch, saw both of their careers in full and you can't compare the 2, Mitch was a game changer, and a field position return man, where as Nelms would provide good field position but he wasen't a game breaker, I liked Nelms but he's no B Mitch.
Eddie Brown deserves some recognition as well, who can forget that great kick return in the rain and mud against the Cards on monday night football to win the game for us. One of the all time great monday night highlights. |

He had his dealership until a few months ago. He sold it and not sure what he's doing these days. I have seen him around town (Culpeper) quite a few times. |

If you guys ever wanted to know what Coach Gibbs refers to when he says a "core Skin", Mike Nelms was it; Wasn't the only one, by far, but he was one of those guys that just showed up to work day in and day out. |
Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?
he was one of the good ones...
he was tough as they come when returning kickoffs... i wonder what he,s doing now myself... |
