Do we start the clock now to countdown to the obligatory "I have an MBA in Finance and I smoke weed every day, because why would God put it on this Earth if not to smoke it every day. Plus it helps my back pain when I go 'hug' my wife" post? |
Re: Reefer Madness
If pot does that, I hate to think what a cocktail of LSD, horse tranquilizers, and Scotch does. That was de rigueur for me through most of the early nineties. Or was it the eighties?
Apparently that particular combination of substances only leads to the pretentious use of French phrases that the user only vaguely comprehends. This is a fairly mild form of mental illness, albeit an annoying one. |

Re: Reefer Madness
Well I find that article to be based in fear. First they say that Cannabis has been implicated in vicious killings, then they point out the guy that killed that woman was into heavy drugs. So how exactly is cannabis the issue?
Cannabis has been implicated in a string of vicious killings, including the recent stabbing of fashion designer Lucy Braham. The former Harrow pupil, whose father is a teacher at the school, started using drugs when he was 14, moving on from cannabis to cocaine. |

I just don't see how they can make that sort of connection. I don't think this has any validity. |

Re: Reefer Madness
This seems like scare tactics to me. They mention extreme cases in which Pot may have been a factor in killings. Is it to anyones suprise that this was goverment funded research?
And let me say this, I have never wanted to kill somebody after I smoke a J. I only feel that way when I can't find any. J/K! |

Re: Reefer Madness
Wishful thinking on all of your parts. So easy to dismiss scientific studies when they affect you and your habits!
:pffff: |
Re: Reefer Madness
I mean what's hard to understand here?
Mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in your brain. Smoking weed introduces chemicals to your brain to make you feel good. You mean introducing enough chemicals to your brain over time could actually create a chemical imbalance??? Me no get it! |
Re: Reefer Madness
ok ok ok this is total BS
|
Re: Reefer Madness
c'mon schneed, I know you're a strong anti-weed guy but I would think even you could see the complete BS of this. It's total propoganda. It reminds me of the old myth that 7 acid trips will make you insane. If you're already predisposed to mental illness I agree this could possibly trigger something, but then again there are probably plenty of other chemicals that could also be a trigger, but to make the claim that 1 joint causes mental illness is just well, insane.

Well to be technical, they didn't say one joint CAUSES mental illness, they said it increases the risk by 40%. Now if we do some careful analysis on that, we might find that the reason the risk goes up 40% may not be due to the weed; it may be because people who are prone to smoke weed are just by nature 40% more likely to be mentally ill. Therefore, weed may not be the cause of the full 40% increase in risk. And just from a gut feel, you can kind of sense that one joint can't possibly CAUSE schizophrenia; rather simply that schizophrenia shows up 40% more often in people who have had at least one joint in their life. But reading the full article, rather than just this sensational headline, you see that the more alarming stat is that repeated use of weed doubles your risk for Schizophrenia. And that makes sense to me, from a gut feel point of view. Schizophrenia is caused by chemical imbalances. Smoking weed puts chemicals in your brain. Therefore, if you smoke enough weed, you might cause a chemical imbalance. Of course, what does it mean to "double the risk" of schizophrenia? That means they're saying the average person has something like a 0.01% chance of developing schizophrenia. Then they're saying that if that person smokes weed a lot over the course of his life, he becomes 0.02% likely to develop schizophrenia. It doubled the risk. Of course, the risk is still low, even after smoking weed. That's what a little analysis can say. I do agree that they're trying to scare people with these sensational headlines. But I also agree with the validity of the science. Try to cut through both, and you get to the truth: they're probably right that weed doubles your chance of being a Schizo, but even after doubling the chances, it's still not that likely that you'll be a Schizo. |
Re: Reefer Madness
I think it's a poorly written article and it's full of scare tactics. I have seen reports on links between weed and schizophrenia before, but this article is just over the top.

Yeah I agree, it is. Just like everything else the media puts out. They twist it and put a sensational headline on it to get people to either buy their paper, buy their magazine, or click on their webpage. I do agree there's a link between weed and schizophrenia. Do I think the increased risk is anything to worry about? No. Even after you double the risk, it's still not a risky thing. That said, I still wouldn't do it, because the sh*t flat out reeks! :tongue |
Re: Reefer Madness
I really don't think smoking marijuana and schizophrenia are related.
Neither do I. Or me either. What they said. |

lol...I guess I'm losing my mind! LOL. With all the positive comments about weed over the past few years, it's only natural for someone to try to cut it down by using fear. |

Fear is all they've ever really had to deter people, it's obviously not working well anymore since the number of people who smoke has been on the rise for quite some time. I guess it's time to cook up another myth surrounding that evil weed. |

I absolutely agree. I do see it being legalized in my lifetime. I would wager that 80% of people are either doing it, or tried it. Maybe more. |
