ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
ESPN - Redskins sign safety Landry of LSU, No. 6 in draft - NFL
Working all through the day Sunday, the Washington Redskins were finally able to strike an agreement early Monday morning with first-round choice LaRon Landry of LSU, the sixth player selected overall in this year's draft. The deal, negotiated by agent Joel Segal, came just shy of 1 a.m. Monday, and will be signed later in the day after both sides review the final document. The five-year contract has a maximum value of $41.5 million and it includes $17.5 million in guarantees. A four-time all-SEC defender, Landry was universally regarded as the top safety in the 2007 draft and among the best prospects at the position in the last several years. He is one of only a handful of safeties ever chosen among the top 10 players in the modern-era draft, and joins teammate Sean Taylor, the Redskins' top pick in 2004, in that distinction |

hey I agree with you......this is the right step in building a championship D |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
Very nice...and we didn't break the piggy bank either.
It's time for the Skins to actually have a great safety tandem on the field, not just on paper (which we seem to have a lot) |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
Says Jsarno before Landry ever plays a snap...
I love Landry, just scary with rookies because you never quite know. |

NOPE...not yet anyway. Maybe they will develope into it, but as of now, they are nothing. With all the question marks this team has this year, this question mark should be the easiest to answer. I really think they will do well, but you never know. Taylor needs to do a better job of being a team player. |

Taylor is great, don't get me wrong...but he feels the need to be superman when his partner starts to falter. |
I couldn't disagree more - we're going to have the two highest paid safeties in the league down the road. We're spending a boatload of money at one of the lesser important positions. I mean, I hope he turns out to be an impact player, but I don't think we'll look back on this as a good move. Wouldn't it be smarter to have two great CB's, DE's, WR's, etc... vs. the safety position? I still can't believe we drafted this guy instead of a D-Lineman. I think it'll set our franchise back years. When we DID draft him, I was positive that Gibbs had a veteran DE in the works - but so far nothing. WTF are we thinking? Am I the only one nervous about this move? Ok - that said, I want to be optimistic about this season - so I won't bring it up again... |

I'm ready to scream but the placement of vet min seemed like it was a joke slid into truth. Maybe I was wrong but if that's what it was then damn you're funny ! If not, it was funny to me! |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
Assuming we re-sign Taylor (which we better, there's been too much invested by the staff not to), we'll have a lot of cap space devoted to the safety position. I think the strategy of the f.o. is to start building through the draft more & relying upon cheap young talent to replace the vets on the d-line.
I'm not saying that they won't sign any big free agents in the next few years, but I think they'll start to look to the draft next year & after to rebuild the o & d lines, both of which are old. I'm guessing that they're not concerned that so much will go to the safety position, rather they need to spread the wealth to both sides of the ball. There's been a lot more guaranteed $ on the O side of the ball for a few years. |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
I like it. Bout time now LL get out there and form chemistry with ST. We need that.

If, and that is BIG IF LL and ST develops into one of best and possibly best of all safety tandem.. Then I don't think we would have much of problem for defense, as Gregg said that they re going to use LL as run stopper and obviously will be used for blitzing more since he wld be closer to the line and ST being ball-hawking.. If those plans work out smoothly.. Then pls can u tell me, what wld be better than that?? |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
Good news. Now get to work!
As for having lots of $$ at safety, both at present are on rookie contracts. Assuming they resign Taylor to a big deal, the main issue will be whether things work with Landry down the road when he needs his big payday. Clearly, Williams is banking that 2 kick-ass safeties will make his D work. Wonder if other D coordinators would have made the pick? Wonder what will happen if GW leaves, and his replacement has to deal with all that cash at safety? But I am optimistic. Yes, we have lots of $$ there, but I'm all for taking the best talent available and making it work. And it's a moot point about other picks--LL is our guy! |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
Doesn't sound like he's inked the deal yet? It's not offical as per the redskins.

Glad Landry has signed but Taylor has to be pissed as hell. But it's his own fault for signing a bad deal. |

I don't think, specifically in GW's defense, that safeties are a lesser important position. He thrives off of the safeties blitzing, and dies by the safeties not being able to cover the pass. Look what happened last year with AA. If you read an article not too long ago about how offenses have begun to figure out the cover-2, it implies GW has to do something to correct it... ie, draft a safety. A huge problem was safeties becoming baited into the run, and getting burned on the PA. (Williams: Offenses Have Uncovered the Cover-2 - washingtonpost.com) I think this is a good signing, and a good draft pick given the options we had. I would have preferred a DE, but at the 6 spot, he was clearly the best choice. |
Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!
as much as i hate to say this, if Landry turns into the player we think he will, it might mean the end of Taylor in Washington. i agree with AJFC, too much money on that position

What's even better is that Landry was PUSHING his agent to get the deal done.

So the salary is cheap for a player of his alleged caliber. |

Great. I'm glad the 'Skins didn't trick him like they did ST. Boy ST should have fired his agent for that awful deal!

Man, I'm no capoligist but, that sounds like a huge contract for a rookie. I hope that it doesn't hurt our team's cap in the long run.

Well, 18+7.2mil = 25.2 mil over 7 years. That would average 3.6 mil a year if it was a straight contract...which I doubt since all contracts are back loaded. So he will likely be costing us 1.5ish towards the cap this year. 2.5ish next year. He won't be a problem until year 5 or 6. |
