I just heard on Fox News Radio that Bill Walsh just died of Leukemia at age 75. No links yet.

Great coach, and he was a great innovator. He helped make football what it is today.

A tragedy indeed...His 49er teams along with our Redskins owned the 80's. May he RIP. Another one of the greats has gone.

The 49ers should really do something special to commemorate him. He is almost the sole reason the 49ers had all that success.
He should have a statue out front of the stadium.

75 is a good age to go. You're not a burden on someone else, but you still have good movement and mobility.
He lived a great life and will always be remembered by football fans forever.

great coach,great legacy on the field and off the field!he has fingerprints still over the coaching personell in the league still.i still think though that joe gibbs is just as good of a coach that bill walsh was.

God bless Bill Walsh and his family. He was the architect of the west coast offense and for many more important reasons, he will be missed.

And on that note, while Joe Montana was undoubtedly great, he owes a ton to Bill Walsh who utilized him to the fullest.

He was a great coach, I still take Gibbs over him any day. If only Gibbs had Montana or Young, god know how many SB Gibbs would have won. Rumor has it that Joe and Bill didn't really like each other, the fact that Bill was nicknamed the "genius" bothered Joe.

I don't care what anybody says -- 75 is too young.

I hated his teams, but respected the hell out of the guy. He's in the top five easy.

I hated those teams too. As much as I have ever hated any team. But they played offense with grace and elan. X's and O's are one thing, but those teams were also well prepared and extremely disciplined with their fundamentals. The 88 and 89 team (inherited by Seifert) were as dominant as I have seen. 87 too, for that matter. We dodged a bullet when Minnesota upset them in S.F. RIP.

Our Skins were just as dominant, with the exception that we played in a tougher division (Giants 2 SB) and had no QB. I recall the playoff game in 1992 at Candlestick in the mud, to me this was Joe Gibbs best coaching year ever despite losing to the 49ers. What he did with that team with so many starters missing and giving the 49ers a scare was of legend. That year the Skins had so many injuries, that 3rd stringers were starting Brian Mitchell was unstoppable and awesome at Candlestick. We lost because Ripyen couldn't deliver the ball to Gary Clark in the end zone inside the 5 yard line of the 49ers. It broke my heart after the ball was intercepted to seal the whiners victory. It pisses me off when I hear how dominant the 49ers were when the Skins were just as good. I hate the Whiners!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Didn't realize that. Wonder what that game was like. Didn't we manage to avoid them in the playoffs during the '91 season too?

i always thought montanna was way overrated.i hate the 49ers,but i did like walsh.i'd still rather have gibbs.

we beat them in the 1983 nfc championship game at rfk too.in 1991 the skins beat arlanta,and beat detroit the next week 41-10.

Man, you're not kidding about the division differences. We had to deal with the Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants, while the Niners were blessed with the likes of the Saints, Rams, and Falcons. Actually, the Rams were pretty good with Jim Everett, but San Fran always had their number.

Well ... okay, we had some gimmes against the Cardinals too.

And I remember that playoff game in '92 -- just heartbreaking. It was the only good drive of the game, we had them on their heels, and Mitchell was on a roll. Then ... the fumble. Ugh. You may be thinking of the 1990 season in Candlestick -- Rypien guided the offense to something like 4 or 5 possessions inside the 49er 10-yard line, and threw 4 INTs.

The problem was that in our rough division we didn't get home advantage like the Niners did in their easy division all the time. If you read my thread on why Art Monk should be in the HOF you'll see why Jerry Rice had such big stats. Rice basically owned the Saints, Falcons and Rams (more than half his stats against those 3 teams).

San Fransisco was dominant in the regular season. Everyone assumed that they would win the NFC. Minnesota beating them was as big a playoff upset as you will see.

Considering all of my family dies between 62-69, I think 75 will be a great number!
My great grandfather died at 59, my grandfather died at 50, and my biological father is 62 and one foot in the grave. 75 will be great!
