Re: Chris Samuels just carted off field

All we can do is hope. We'd really be in a hole if that were to happen. T. Wade is big, but can't very well fill up both a guard and a tackle position. Who else could even step up successfully?

Please let him be ok, we really don't need any injuries to the o-line.

6:15 p.m. ET

Practice ended at about 5:50 p.m. ET and there was a mad scramble for interviews.

Joe Gibbs said he thinks Chris Samuels suffered a knee sprain during practice, but he emphasized that it's best to wait for the official word from the athletic trainers.

Someone rolled onto Samuels's leg during a play in practice.

Gibbs also said that Mike Espy has a bruised knee.

More practice highlights to come, and more from Gibbs.

If it's going to happen, I'd rather it be this early in camp. Especially if it's a knee sprain. Let's all hold hands and pray...

I said hands, AMD!!

God I hope this is just a minor sprain. Hopefully he'll be back for the start of the season.

I've heard partial tear of the MCL. But I can't confirm.

If so, he'll likely miss preseason. The good news, if any, is that it happened now and he should good to go Week One

JLC update:

Redskins Insider

Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels had to be carted off the field late in this afternoon's practice with what the team hopes is a mild MCL sprain. Samuels tangled amid a gaggle of bodies and was on the ground for several minutes before being helped to the sidelines.

Samuels appeared to be getting treatment on his left knee, but the team has not yet verified the knee that was hurt. Samuels spoke to teammates and team officials while being carted off, several of whom said that the veteran did not believe the injury was a major tear. Samuels went directly to the training room and the Redskins may not know the extent of the injury until late tonight or tomorrow.

Receiver Mike Espy missed the second practice with a bruised left knee and fullback Pete Schmitt left practice early with a left shoulder injury and did not return. More information on their status should be available later tonight. Rookie linebacker Dallas Sartz (hamstring) missed both practices today. Tight end Tyler Ecker (groin) missed both sessions. Star linebacker Marcus Washington, who is coming off hip surgery, was rested for the second session today.

Dude, relax it's pre-season...shit happens. Big Chris will be fine. He played practically all last year on a bad knee.

Re: Chris Samuels just carted off field

Well if it was a complete tear then they would know very quickly. Like on the field the trainer would have a pretty good idea that it was a complete tear. If the rumors an hour or two later are still that it is only a sprain then it is unlikely to be a catastrophic type injury. Not a good thing but in this case hopefully the least worst scenario.

Re: Chris Samuels just carted off field

I agree shit happens but, it is so gut wrench when something happens. It is the worst defeat. At some point in my life after watching football I will realize that no season is injury free. You need to also remind yourself that ever other team is going through the same crap. This year I just want to come out of the gate with all our horses.

At work I have just keeped my mouth shut. I want to be able to have something to cheer about before running my mouth about how good we are. I want to be able to walk in on Monday morning with a smile on my face because I know the Redskins just got a big win on Sunday and nobody can say shit to me!

Please let this be a small injury, please.

Apparently he was already on the down when he got rolled over. Thank goodness it's not torn, for him and the team. We need that big Pro Bowler protecting JC's blind side!

I think you might be overblowing the use of the word "replacing" They're merely saying someone needs to fill in at that spot while he was out. Even if it's just for a few days

Same stuff, from the Wash Times:

Samuels off to MRI [Ryan O'Halloran]

Redskins director of sports medicine said moments ago that left tackle Chris Samuels sustained a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee and was scheduled for an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Samuels went down late in the Redskins' practice this afternoon while engaged with a pass rusher.

On his way out of Redskin Park tonight, Samuels said: "Two guys fell into my leg. ... I think I'm OK. I didn't feel anything pop."

In February, Samuels, 30, had surgery on his left knee. In 2003, he missed three games with a right knee MCL injury.

News & Notes: Samuels Injures Knee
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
July 30, 2007

Left tackle Chris Samuels suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee during Monday's practice. Samuels is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on the knee on Monday evening.

Team officials will evaluate Samuels' status after the MRI is completed.

The injury occurred late in practice when a lineman inadvertently rolled over Samuels' leg.

After practice, Samuels walked out of Redskins Park towards the team bus wearing a brace around his right knee.

"It's just a sprain," Samuels said. "I think I'm okay. I didn't feel anything pop, but it was definitely my MCL. I'm going to go get an MRI and we'll see how long it takes for me to get back out on the field.

It's likely that Samuels will be sidelined for several practices, as well as this Saturday's scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Samuels said that when the injury initially happened, his first thought was that his season was over before it started.

"But the good Lord blessed me and I know that I'm fine," he said.

Head coach Joe Gibbs said he is unlikely to move Todd Wade back to tackle to replace Samuels in the lineup. It's possible that reserve lineman Jason Fabini, who has played mostly tackle in his career, could step in for Samuels.
