Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

What is going on - from starter to off the team. Whose cereal bowl did Lamar piss in? WOW!

FROM Profootballtalk.com:

'SKINS SHUFFLE LINEBACKERS

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Washington Redskins have signed linebacker Randall Godfrey. To create room for Godfrey, the Redskins released linebacker Lemar Marshall.

Godfrey, an 11-year veteran, has spent the last three seasons with the Chargers. Before that, he played for the Titans, Seahawks, and Cowboys.

Marshall entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2001, and has spent his entire career with the Redskins. He has been a starter for most of the past three seasons, and he was due to earn $1 million in 2007, the final year of his contract.

It looks like they didn't want to entrust him with the starting position in M. Washington's stead. They probably scoured the free agent pools for a possible starting LB. Godfrey is what they found.

Maybe this guy can pick up G. Williams defense better than anyone else available.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Why would the release Marshall when there is so much other camp fodder they could cut to free up a roster spot? I call BS on this until there is a link from a reputable website.

No way, that couldn't be it. Some guy off the streets wouldn't know GWs defense better than Marshall.

But if this is true, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, Marshall just didn't return to form. It's possible they wanted him to hit the market sooner rather than later so that he get on with another team.

This is BS. We didn't release Lamar Marshall.

Daseal - that hurts! But I understand...

Lamar was supposed to be good enough for us to release Pierce - and surely we could have at least traded his ass for a can of tuna. Is he hurt? Did he tell Gibbs that Tony Stewart is overated? Did he ask Williams if he could re-enter the draft as a safety so the Skins will pay him big $$? There's got to be some explanation here...

I haven't heard anything over here. I'll see if I get some time to look into it.

On a somewhat related note though, Jeremiah Trotter has been released.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Assuming this isn't a bogus lead - anyone know anything interesting about Randall Godfrey? For instance:

1) Why he wasn't on a roster
2) Is he broken
3) Why no one has spoken about him this offseason
4) If he was a bear, what kind of bear he would be
5) Favorite Power Ranger

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

This makes no sense whatsoever. If Godfrey turns out to be another Holdman, I will have lost all confidence in the FO.

No Sh*t.

I was just coming on to ask when the next round of cuts was due. Anyone know the date?

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

WTF? No way this makes sense. How does the guy entrusted to save the position after Pierce get cut just two seasons later after doing an ok job at it? For an old guy. Strange.

MTK 08-21-2007 10:46 AM

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Let's think about it rationally rather than automatically thinking the front office doesn't know what they're doing and we're losing some sort of superstar in Marshall.

Releasing Marshall makes sense if he's still not 100% recovered from last year. He was very ineffective last year when banged up.

This move makes sense if the coaches feel Godfrey brings more to the table as a veteran backup LB.

Additionally, this move makes sense if the coaches are confident in their other backups like Blades, K. Campbell, Sartz, etc.

Here is Godfrey's Scouts Inc. profile:

2006 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 71 | Key
Alert: AD

Comment:
Godfrey is experienced, instinctive and pretty athletic. He has good recognition skills and can get to the ball quickly. He still has good range inside the box. He can slide, stay square and attack downhill. He will square up and hold his ground when stepping up at the point of attack in two-gap technique. He uses his hands well when taking on blocks. He can avoid and separate from blocks when moving downhill. He is a good all-around tackler. He has above average zone awareness. He is decent in coverage in underneath zones. He times up zone blitzes well inside and on the perimeter. But Godfrey is aging, has declining athletic skills and has become more of a two-down player. He lacks great cover skills. He is cut high and struggles to react quickly and change directions off zone drops. He isn't especially explosive in stack-and-shed mode. He has trouble keeping his feet clean when moving through trash. He has some durability concerns.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

This is highly suprising. I don't know whether to believe this is true or not, on one hand Adam Schefter is reporting it, and he won't say something like that unless it actually happened, and on the other hand it's from PFT. What did the front office not see in Marshall? He was not a good middle linebacker last season, but he's a quality outside backer. If this is true I hope Godfrey is good, I don't want him to be another Holdman.

SmootSmack 08-21-2007 10:48 AM

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Godfrey can still contribute a lot in my opinion. Looking specifically at signing him, the move doesn't bother me. But, looking big picture at it, I don't know why Marshall had to be the one to "suffer" for it. Is he hurt? Did he ask for his release to have a chance elsewhere?

Perhaps more importantly though, this move tells me that they're concerned with Marcus Washington's health (more so than they're letting on) and wanted another veteran starting out there.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

I personally thought that Marshall was an excellent reserve linebacker and a decent starting OLB. He was overmatched at MLB, but I'm disappointed to see him go.

Randall Godfrey used to be a pretty damn good linebacker, but I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank at this stage of his career.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Just doesn't make sense, I don't care how we slice it. An eleven year vet for a proven vet that started last year. Unless Marshall is still hurt, and they wanted him to get into another system before long.

That being said, there's no guarantee that Godfrey makes the team either. It could be that we're just comfortable with our young crop of linebackers.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Marshall was due the Vet min, Rocky is up and coming, and the new guys can adequately fill in the ST's and PS. This has got to be a cost savings move.

He had 4 sacks last year. Which isn't much, but it'd have been second only to Carter's 6 on our team last year

I agree 12th. Marshall, a guy who's been here and already knows the system for someone that you are hoping on not to mention a bit older than Marshall isn't that much of a brain teaser for me. Also, maybe Sartz, Blades, and the rest have turned out better than they originally thought they would be. Who knows

True, given the fact MW has been so banged up recently perhaps the coaches just aren't confident in having to start Marshall again? I wouldn't like the idea of him starting on the strongside either.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

I always hate to see career long skins cut or traded. Marshall always filled in wherever needed. I did get the impression from a couple of his comments in the offseason that he wasn't happy w/Rocky being promoted.
Maybe he was becoming a distraction?

Monkeydad 08-21-2007 11:09 AM

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Well, there was some initial shock for me because of what Lemar HAS done for us in the past, but when I think about it more, we have a very good bunch of young LBs. Rocky, Sartz, Blades...they all look like they'll be great. (Rocky already is).

I guess we're actually thinking about our future. We have begun making some huge successes out of draft picks and young talent in the last few years instead of relying on old vets...Taylor, Rogers, Campbell, Landry, McIntosh, Betts...there's probably plenty more.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

I think the Front Office just realized that they had almost gone through an entire offseason without casting aside another long-time skin and figured they had to change that.

I don't know, maybe he's injured, maybe he mouthed off to a coach, whatever the case is, I can't help but believe there had to be someone other than Marshall that could have been cut to make room for yet another guy who doesn't know our system.
