JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

Anyone have any idea how much money he's asking for? If Culppeper comes out and rips it up, do you guys think Russell then becomes trade bait?

He'd better pretty darn good for all the money he's asking for....whatever that is?

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

I don't remember exactly but I think it was something like $65-70 million with a $30 million signing bonus. I think the Raiders stopped at $60 million. I don't remember the years or if those are the exact numbers but somewhere in that ballpark sounds about right.

Russell could be the 2nd coming of Montana, but no way in hell is he worth 30 mil up front...or 60 million overall as a goddamn rookie. Whatever he's smoking, I want some...

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

I thought the contract was stuck on a clause saying that the team can recoup X amount if he does anything of the field.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

John Clayton reported last night that the differences were really just in guaranteed money, and he thinks at best there might be a deal sometime in September.

I think dont understand where a player gets off thinking they should get huge amounts of guaranteed money. Maybe there should be a clause for a decent lump sum if you get seriously injured, but what if you're a bust

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

I hope to god Al Davis is brave enough to not pay the kind of money the Russell camp is asking for. I'm all for making as much money as you can but these contracts are really getting insane, especially for people who've never played a down in the pros.

Yes, I'm cheering for Al.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

Now Russell is being stupid. And the Raiders are stupid too. One of the great things about having the number 1 pick is being able to negoiate with players prior to the pick. they didnt and now they fucked up by not doing that.

I never thought in a million years I'd be rooting for Dante Culpepper to be the second coming of Dan Marino.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

It's unlikely that he would have had much playing time anyway, but this is absurd.

If I'm a Raider fan, I boo his ass out of the stadium when he finally takes the field. If Culpepper pans out, Al looks like a genius.

Give a final offer and if he dont sign it he wont get paid. One of these days he will need the money and sign the deal.

LOL, what made you say Montana? Russell has no attributes that even remotely resemble Montana.

I think he was just using Montana as an example of a great quarterback that Russell wants to be like someday. Either way it's ridiculous how much money Russell wants, I'm rooting for Al and the Raiders on this one. Put a final offer on the table and if he doesn't take it then whatever.

So what happens if they can't come to terms?
We've never seen this before, so does this mean he becomes a FA? Does anyone know?

We've never seen this before, but it's happened in the NFL in the past. Bo Jackson was another #1 pick that never got signed, and he entered the NFL Draft the next year, only he got drafted a hella lot later lol.

That's actually not entirely accurate.
Bo was drafted by the Bucs in 86, but opted to play baseball instead. Him not signing with Tampa was purely because of his desire to play baseball.
The reason why he was selected (7th round) late in 87 was because no one knew if he was going to stay in baseball or not.
So while I can see your point about this, it's a totally different scenario.

But I guess you did answer my question...if he doesn't sign, then he goes into next years draft?

That's a horrible attitude!!! This man was scouted and WANTED to play in Oakland, but he's too selfish to get on the field. I hope Russell never plays in the NFL after this horrible display. Either he signs before his teams last preseason game, or I don't want to ever see him the NFL. This is disgusting! He should be ashamed of himself. This is exactly what is wrong with athletes today!

The NFL should come up with a new rule, that if a team drafts you, they own you for 5 years until a contract is made to avoid this.
They should also come up with a system of pay for draft picks.

Pretty much. I guess technically he could be signed as a free agent, but I'm not entirely sure on that because I don't know all the rules governing unsigned draft picks.

I don't remember Russell "wanting" to play in Oakland. I thought he had said if they were gonna draft him they better be ready to pay him, or something like that.

Who's his agent?

I remember an interview with him...of course, he could have been saying it as a polite thing to say since he knew he was the #1 pick.

SS...so what happens if he doesn't sign?

mooby 08-30-2007 11:48 PM

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

If he doesn't sign he enters the NFL Draft again next year, only next year he will be drafted much lower because he can't play college football again and therefore it will have been an entirely wasted year.

If I'm Al Davis, I threaten to pull the offer now to get him to sign. (Course if I was Al Davis, I wouldn't have drafted him in the first place).

Eric Metz...at least that's what a google of "JaMarcus Russell, agent" told me...

oh, and jsarno...would you have preferred Steve Young? Montana was the first name that fell out of my ass when trying to compare to a top QB of all time...

What kind of compensatory picks? Do you at least get a late 1'st round pick? We're talking about #1 overall so I'm sure 3'rd rounders won't do.

That just sucks for the raiders.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

Yeah I also wonder what kind of compensation the Raiders would get if they didn't sign Russell at all. You can't just lose the first overall pick in the draft and get minimal compensation for it.

It makes a BIG difference in their salary cap for the future.

And those area bunch of third rounders the Raiders won't have if Russell signs for $65 million.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

Remember when everyone thought we were scouting Russell down at LSU?

Fools.

I think the NFL should strong arm the Union and make all Rookie Contracts a guaranteed three year deal, at a reasonable rate. Then after at is up the team can sign the player to huge money. Think of all of the money that wouldn't have been wasted on First round busts. Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf....

Kind of make it like the NBA rookie contracts. Here it is, this is the only contract you can get, take it or leave it.

there is a system if you want to call it that; cap space has to be allocated to rookies.

I absolutely agree. Here are kids that are "supposed" to not be making any money in college, and they turn their noses up at 3 or 4 or even 5 mil a YEAR.
Maybe agents shouldn't be allowed in sports either.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

Russell is a talent for sure, but he is overhyped. LSU didn't even win their conference last season. Didn't even win their division. His asking price is insane. I hope this is where it stops fellas, I mean the insane bullshit contracts. Wages for us working stiffs have either stagnated or have started to tank, while these schmucks keep asking for more $$$$$$. I hope Al has the balls I think he does and tells this punk where to go.

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

This is getting ridiculous...the league should have a cap on the draft slot contracts, plain and simple. I feel bad for the Raider fans out there, they don't deserve this. Reminds of the Heath Shuler holdout, only a 100 times worse.

Cowell 09-01-2007 10:52 AM

Re: JaMarcus Russell Still Holding Out

I really hate rookies who hold out. Someone should come and let them know that they have yet to prove themselves on the professional level. This is really ridiculous.
