I got mugged
Yeah fellas, this isnt a joke. Last night around 130am by a parking garage. I was punched multiple times in the head/face, and I just threw all the cash I had and ran.
I am safe and fine, just bruises and stuff. Only real issue is that this happened right by my house(on campus) and that is scary as hell. I reported everything to the police, but I highly doubt they are gonna catch this guy. I guess just a reminder to all the people out there in college, or any age to be safe and always walk with multiple people late at night. Especially when drunk. I just thank God I am alive to post this message here. At one point when I was being robbed I was fearful for my life. |
Re: I got mugged
Sorry to hear that man, hope you are alright. As they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Do they have any idea who the guy was? Does he go to the school?
|
Re: I got mugged
Oh my Gosh!
Praise God you are alive to tell about this. I'm so sorry to hear this brother. Prayers going up as I type for you man. peace and healing <>< |
Re: I got mugged
Thanks guys, so much. It might seem silly but your posts mean a lot because I dont really have many people to tell. I dont know if I want to tell every single person I know, I am still thinking about not telling my parents because they will freak out.
So far I have told a selected few, so I guess it is nice talk about this stuff on the internet as "hooskins". |
Re: I got mugged
jeez that's scary man, glad you're ok
|
Re: I got mugged
Dude that sucks. Glad it wasn't worse. Makes you want to take a class on kickboxing or something.
|
Re: I got mugged
Scary here too cus yer just 20 minutes west of me. My area around my house is not bad but even parts of my town are scary these days.
Did you have someone check yer wounds? Ya get cleaned up? |

I thought it wasnt too bad last night, but I guess being drunk made it hurt less. Right now I have a black eye, busted lip, swollen places on my face, and my heads hurts because of punches. And I agree SBF, sometimes anyplace can be dangerous. I feel like I have taken living in the safe place of NOVA for granted, Charlottesville has a much dangerous population. I know this too and I was a freaking idiot for being alone and not just leaving the garage when I saw that guy. I had that feeling in my gut that something is wrong right when I entered the place, and I should have followed my instinct. Using that gut reaction is right 99% of the time. |

Yeah, or just get a bit bigger which has been one of my goals. I have been working out and all that stuff alot more but this only motivates me. I was actually taller than the guy who did this, and I would think stronger. But he was sober and caught me by surprise. I also didnt know wtf was happening and there wasnt enough time to reach. See I didnt even know if he had other people around him or what not, so I decided not to retaliate. Should I have? |

No sense in worry about things like this. Personally, I wouldn't tell my parents because they would freak out and it would occupy their minds for a long long time but that's just me. Now if you see your parents all the time and you got a black eye, you got to tell them. "I got jumped, got in couple of shots of my own in there, I'm alright" should suffice. |
Re: I got mugged
You bring shame to your people! Have you not learned how to fight from all the Bollywood movies you've seen? Dishoom Dishoom man :)
But seriously man, that really does suck. I'm glad that you're relatively ok And no, I wouldn't have retaliated. You never who else or what else he had. Muggers aren't interested in fighting fair. |

You never know if the dude has a knife, or worse, and it's not worth finding out. It sounds to me like you did the right thing. I'm sorry to hear that but glad you're pretty much okay. I imagine that you'll be on edge for a bit, which is completely understandable. I just moved into the city and we walk everywhere and I try to constantly be on the lookout, but I guess if shit does happen then there's really not a whole lot you can do. Don't take this the wrong way, but this makes me think of McLovin in the liquor store in Superbad. If only you had a video tape. |

Just be glad you were not hurt seriously and that you didn't lose much money(how much did he get?). This should be an experience that will live with you forever and hopefully you sharing your story will help somebody else realize that this can happen anytime, anyplace and to anybody. Too many times people believe the "it won't happen to me" stuff. you can never be too careful. If your gut tells you something isn't right, Then its probably true. God bless you and stay safe. |

Absolutely not! You're inebriated and you don't know if he has a weapon. |
Re: I got mugged
Man, glad to hear you are still around to tell this tale! I think you did the right thing, give them whatever they wanted and get the hell out of dodge. Did you get a good look at him? If so, you can always be on the lookout for the SOB and catch his ass by surprise one day :-).
Glad to hear you are recovering. |
Re: I got mugged
Yeah I was thinking the same thing, and thats why I just coughed up my cash. It was about 80-100 bucks, I really dont care about the money though. Also he didnt grab my wallet, which was a surprise to me. I still have my credit cards and what not.

Glad to hear you are recovering.[/quote] I did get a good look and him and I gave a pretty good description to the police. But the problem is that Charlottesville is also a city and they have a huge city population. I highly doubt they are gonna find this guy. Last night I was terrified about running into the guy again(partly because I was drunk). This mugging happened about 2 blocks from house. I also dont know about this guy, what if he is affiliated with a gang or whatnot. |

Re: I got mugged
That's crazy this happened there. Whenever I'm up in that direction it always seems like such a much safer place than a lot of big cities in VA. My wife and I are always walking around the outdoor mall downtown and it just seems to be such a nice place. Glad to hear you're OK man..

*ANYONE WITH STRONG POLITICAL FEELINGS AND THE PROPENSITY FOR ARGUMENT IGNORE THIS POST*
This is one of the reasons I have a concealed carry permit. Whenever I go down to Mexico (4-5 times per year) with my wife, I am always carrying because there is absolutely no law enforcement that you can count on. If you're going in to an unsafe area, you have to be able to protect yourself and anyone with you. (the above statement is indicative of a constitutionally protected personal choice. I am a former military member who has had extensive firearms training. If you would decide to look into some measure of protection make sure you get the proper training so that you will not only have the means but also the wherewithal to protect yourself.) BTW, you were absolutely right not to try and drunk fight that guy off of you. If all you lost was a hundred bucks and a black eye, chalk it up to learning a tough lesson and count your blessings. |

This kinda stuff actually happens around the Corner area in Charlottesville during the night when people are out partying. Usually its more like some older townie trying to rape a girl that is walking back home, by herself. Last year someone was robbed at gunpoint in the same area. I am usually always aware of what is going on, and I am usually the first guy that tells people that we should move/leave because it doesnt feel right. Last night I just made a terrible decision and it was really fucked up on my part. Pretty much my fault. I know it is a random event but still it could have been prevented. |

I was walking from school to my house and next thing I know two guys came at me. I got punched in the mouth. They weren't motivated by money, they just wanted to give me a licking. |

That's gotta be scary, seeing that is on the way to your house. A route that you follow on a daily basis. |

I wasn't scared, rather consumed with anger. I wanted revenge more than anything else. I went home, got cleaned up then my brother and I and some friends started prowling the neighborhood looking for them. This was when I was 18, I have evolved since then :) |
Re: I got mugged
hoo, glad your alright. and you did the right thing by giving them your money. remember, those who learn to walk away....
|
Re: I got mugged
You should have used the quart of blood technique. :joke: You did the right thing by not fighting back. If someone is mugging you there probably a pretty desperate person and there’s no telling how far they might go to get your money. Nothing you own is worth your life. Glad to hear your ok hooskins.

Re: I got mugged
Hate that it happened to you, hoo, but glad to know you only came away with some lost money and bruises. Try not to look back at the situation to see what you should have done differently to the attacker because if there is a next time it will be a different situation. Just remember yourself and your surroundings always.

Re: I got mugged
Thanks guys, I appreciate you all hearing me out on this one. I hear about stuff like this happening here at uva, but just never thought I would be the victim. I have always been pretty good about knowing what is a good situation and what is not, but I just make a really bad mistake yesterday night.
But I guess it was a learning experience. |
Re: I got mugged
That is crazy, America is crazy like that. Hope you are okay man.

Re: I got mugged
So a little update. I talked to student affairs and they have an assistant dean that deals with issues like this. I spoke to him for a while just to give information and stuff but he was really nice. He kept on asking what he could do to help me out. The University has a ton of services for students who just need to talk to someone etc. I told him I didnt need any of that, but just send out an email ASAP to UVA students about this incident.
Usually our school sends out emails after these incidents to let students know to be safe. I just want it to get out, because the area this happened is right where many students lives, and I just dont want to hear about this happening to someone again. |

Re: I got mugged
man most important thing is that you are OK. No need to be embarrassed in anyway. Fighting back would be dumb as shit seeing you were drunk. You did the right thing.
Being in college park we have to worry about this stuff when we go out. Its not fun to worry about and it sucks walking through an area when you sure as hell know you shouldn't be. The other week someone got robbed on our campus mall. That is in the f...ing middle of campus. MOst of the muggings happen a few miles off campus and if you are out there you seriously probably will be robbed if you are alone. Being that we have muggings every once in a while the school sends out messages where they are and stuff and the description. No one is ever found. It is scary when you hear a gun is involved. Last year there was a saturday night where a group of high schoolers from the area went around robbing quite a few people. The police here cracked down on their ass. Every f...ing street corner was full of cops. They found 4 of them who used fake guns in the robberies. I was going from one place to another that night and we were in a group of like 25 people. Other than that i never hear of anyone getting caught after the incidents . One of my friends carries a knife on him when going out to shady places. I tell him that if he uses that thing, he will be the one that is killed. I mean he is a pretty big guy but he doesn't have the mindset that these loonies have. They prey on people and beat the shit out of them for 40 bucks. They can easily kill you if you put them in a position to. However, they don't want to hurt you really. Be cooperative and they will be done in a minute. Its not worth 100 bucks. Last night i was about 5 miles off campus. That was not a real good idea. It was shady as hell. My friend and I got a ride back with some girls and were gentlemen and walked them home after we parked. The thing is you can get robbed walking back on campus after you park at 3 AM. Staying in groups is key. Also run across a area if you are really sketched out. Good exercise and who the hell is going to rob a guy that is already running. They are looking for drunk people that can't barely stand. |

You got away safe and sound to tell the tale, with only a few bruises. I'd say that's a pretty good outcome. I tend to be a hothead, so someone attacking me would make me pissed off and I'd probably attack back. But that'd be my emotional reaction taking over, and probably not the smart thing. Like people have said, you never know if he's packing or what. |
Re: I got mugged
Damn hoo that sounds like it really sucks. You did the right thing by not fighting back though, there's no telling if he had another weapon on him and since he was willing to rob you in the first place he probably would've been willing to go much further than that. Thankfully you got out of there alive with just a few bruises and less money. If you do decide to take self defense classes it probably won't help if you're inebriated. Just try to get through shady areas as quickly as possible, and listen to your gut instincts.

He was asking for info, because they want to pursue this case. They have cameras in the garage and they could find this guy. Only problem is what if he is in a gang, I dont know where he lives and what he does. I could be putting myself in a lot more danger than just letting this whole thing go. The detective said if caught he could get 20 years+. That is crazy, but I dont know if I would pursue that. |

Yeah so monkeys are crazy in India. They are everywhere, streets, rooftops, etc. The monkeys jacked my veggies. There are fruit and vegetable dealers that come by your neighborhood trying to sell you stuff. So I bought a couple for the house we were staying at, and right before I entered the door a monkey jumped in front of me and grabbed all the shit from my hands and ran. It was scary as hell. |

I hate monkeys, they're like insane little people. They're unpredictable and just F'ing wild.
