Defensive game plan vs. Eagles
 

I would like to solicit some ideas on how we will defend against Philly on MNF. I think it is paramount that we play solid defensively, because we can't count on our offense to do great things against a division rival in their house with their crowd.

Who starts at the CB positions and who comes in on nickel? Personally I think Springs and Smoot should start, and Rogers should be the third.

How will we get pressure on McNabb? GW has got to dial up some disguised blitzes. I think he will, and I tend to believe he was holding back some against Miami knowing we have a division game the following week.

I'm confident we can contain the run.

Springs and Rogers should be starting, and we should not be playing the Cover 2 if we don't have to. Philly lit us up when we played in the Cover 2 last year. And more blitzes, where the hell was the blitz in Sunday's game?

Blitz McNabb and test that knee make him move he can't throw well on the run. He say himself he is like 75% great coverage with the secondary we will dominate.

their wide outs are terrible. lets play man to man, and have everyone else up at the line of scrimmage. lets have someone other then Michael Westbrook beat us

I would start Springs and Rogers. Carlos does a lot of things well. I'm sorry he's not a lockdown CB but it is what it is. I can't give him the hook quite yet.

I think the one player we need to stop is Westbrook. If you can nuetralize the screens and draws you take away a lot of first downs. The next thing they look to is the TE over the middle, so I would continue to play Cover 1 or Cover 3 a lot. In terms of pressuring McNabb, the most important thing is to contain him. If we can keep him in the pocket and make him make plays with his arm and not his legs, we will win our share of those situations. He was 15/33 last week.

But, I think the most important thing we can do is establish the running game. The Eagles love to get a lead and then blitz like mad when you have to try to catch up. We need Portis and Betts to control the clock and keep the game manageable. I think we showed Sunday, that if we can keep game close to the point where we can continue to run the football late, we will eventually when the war of attrition up front.

Blitzes, blizes and more blitzes. Hearing that crap about how Trent is the check-down master pisses me off. Unless we're playing some rookie QB, ALL NFL QBs are going to be able to check down effectively for the most part.

We need to get some pressure in his face to win this one.

Springs and Rogers need to be starting to have success in this game, if it's Smoot and Rogers we are going to be in for a long night. I don't think the Eagles run game will be much of a factor, as I think the Eagles will do a lot of dump passes, and screens to Westbrook, and exploit the holes between our LB's and DB's with their WR's like the Dolphins did. We definitely need to get to McNabb early in the game with some blitzes, to rattle his confidence. I think if we can take Westbrook out of the game, and contain McNabb and make him force throws to his WR's then I think we will have a good shot at doing well against their offense.

I think Landry should shadow Westbrook and take him out of the game. We make the Eagles have to beat us offensively without their most dangerous weapon

This game is going to boil down to time of possession, I believe. The Eagles won't throw anything at the Redskins we haven't seen in the past two or three years. Their core parts and approach are essentially the same. A new wrinkle here and there, but basically the same old Eagles.

We have to get an early jump on them, control the clock, and keep them in third down passing situations - that's it. I tell you who's going to be critical to us winning this game; [B]Derrick Frost. [/B]If we can keep the Eagles on a long field as opposed to a short one like we did last year, I think we have a really good shot.

I don't know how effective blitzing will be to honest with you, and we can not give them those cushions underneath as has been pointed out.

Shadowing a player just doesn't work. All you do is take a top player on the defense out of 90% of the plays because it isn't too hard for the offense to catch on to that.

Landry just needs to play within the scheme and he will make plays.

Maybe its me but I have the feeling that our D is going to shut down McNabb and Westbrook. JC, Cooley, and Moss will click in this game then add El, Portis, Betts, and its a big time win. Oh, and I forgot that Laundry & Taylor will be all over the field and we will hear their names allot this week.

Its going to be tough to get a W in Philly this week. The extra day is HUGE for preparation and the D will certainly need it. They must get pressure on McNabb from all points. Not just contain from the outside, but up the middle in his face as well. The Eagles Oline is still one of the leagues best and we should not forget that!

If I am the Eagles I am thinking Westbrook and LJ Smith across the middle on crossing routes and play action drag routes. This type of stuff is something the Skins have been struggling with for 3 years now.

I say put Rocky Mac as a shadow to Westbrook. Play bump and run on receivers(Safties over the top), get pressure on the inside....walk away with the win!!!

Containment, containment, containment. Task a linebacker every play to watch the running back. We need our DE/LB to contain Donavon's legs. When things break down, he'll move out of the pocket, reset, and find an opening.

This is our first divisional game. We need to hit them in the mouth on every play. Show them that it's going to cost them for every first down. And then contain the big play. We'll give them 2-3 big plays.

Hit them, hit them, hit them.

I watched the Philly-GB game and the Packers had Hunter shadowing Westbrook all day, followed him in motion and everything. It seriously minimized his effectiveness.

A few times they motioned Westbrook out wide to set up a mismatch, but the safety would cheat a little closer and help out the DB there, and Hunter or Hawk would harass Smith.

If the Washington defense can minimize the effectiveness of Westbrook, then, they will always keep the offense within striking distance.

Hopefully Williams will use his extensive blitz packages to keep LJ Smith in to block, and keep him out of pass patterns.

The Green Bay offense failed to score a TD against the Eagles, but still won the game.

I agree that we must contain Westbrook and especially in the underneath passing game. That's gonna require a different strategy from week 1. JLac thinks McNabb will pass 40 times, which will put a lot of pressure on our safeties and CBs. Now we'll really see how our upgrades work. Big game for Laron. Plus, we've gotta get some pressure (just like every week!).

As usual, ball control will help--if we can run the ball effectively and convert 3rd downs, we can keep McNabb and co on the bench. It will be a tough game. Glad we got the W against Miami--creates a much better mind-set going into Philly!

Guess you don't remember Lavar shadowing McNabb about 5 or so years ago with great success. I'm sure one of Landry's jobs will be to stick to Westbrook like glue

If that is his job, this will be good a good test of how fast Landry really is and how well his cover skills really are. If he does end up shadowing Westbrook I think it will be a great matchup.

I agree......The Eagles thrive on that short passing game. We'll need our track shoes because they'll throw 40 times or more. We didn't look good defending the intermediate passes on Sunday, save for a few drops by Miami, the outcome could have been much different.

Well the NFC East is a lot like the SEC is college football. All the teams really hate each other and beat each other up. It's not that we have the best teams, it's the fact that we have the best rivalries and no one really ever wins the division by a long shot.

You're right, I don't remember.

Just because it worked once, doesn't mean it is the best option. They'll recognize that, and find a way to get the ball to a different weapon. It takes more than one player to stop an offense.

By the way, if Landry is to "stick to Westbrook like glue" as you say, then that will be his only job. Why limit him like that?

I'm not so sure about sending so many blitz's at them. Westbrooke is probably the best receiving back in the NFL. If we start sending too many people at MCnads, he'll suck the defense in and drop the pass to westbrook. I'm more concerned with coverage that anything else. We have to shadow Westbrook on every down, and make the QB look down field. If he's not completely healthy he'll be looking for short quick passes to avoid the scramble.
I do want to see more from our FS/SS positions. We need to go out, and crack some heads and earn some respect. Get thier receivers scared to catch the ball.
Most important, we need to generate pressure from our d-line. If they can't get through, we'll have to start more blitzes, and I don't think that's the answer.

I wouldn't take Landry out of the secondary to shadow Westbrook, a LB (Rocky?) can cover Westbrook in short patterns, which is where he thrives.

By minimizing Westbrook and Smith, McNabb completed less than 50% of his passes on Sunday against the Packers.

It is going to be a tough task to do at Lincoln Financial though.

what you do is constantly blitz either washington or fletcher-baker (stupid madden adding baker on the end) and keep the pressure on mcnabb, get him to pass the short yardage and have the other linebacker(s) and corners be threre to hitstick or strip the ball out. Constant Pressure on the sports hernia is how the D will win the game. Offensively, give it to Cooley rarrarararrrar.
