Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
It's funny how when we think of Joe Gibbs they mention three Super Bowls, when he actually went took the Skins to four during his first stint.
Although the Skins lost that game, it's still worth noting that Gibbs dominated the NFC during his tenure. For those of you who don't remember the game, it was a heartbreaking lost to the Raiders. The play I remember the most was Marcus Allen scooting up the middle on a busted play for a 74 yd touchdown. I think I was sick for a week after that play. |

That was a tough loss for me to swallow. |
Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
I remember mostly Marcus Allen cutting back across the field from the right to the left and then running straight to the end zone. Bad, bad memories of that game. I had to go to school the next day, very bad.

I tell you that other play that killed me, the play by Jack Squirek. I believe it was right before half-time?

trying to run a screen pass to Joe Washington. the skins used the same play during the season, to burn the raiders on a long gainer |

yeah that was the game changing play if i recall , wasnt it an interception returned like 10 yds for the score right before half time? same year we went 14-2 the two games we lost by a total of 2 points, 31-30 to the pokes and 48-47 to the packers on monday night. Mosely missed a very makable game winning fg if i recall right. |

If I remember correctly, earlier in the year when we played the raiders, they were beating us pretty good in that game, but in the end the Skins pulled out a victory in dramatic fashion. |
Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
they came out on the 1st drive in the 3rd quarter, scored a td,and promptly missed the pat!the sqirek int td pass return pretty much killed them.my nephew met marcus allen a few years back in nyc..he told my nephew no matter where he goes in the usa, there is always a redskin fan to give him some shit over that run.not too many people remember this, but before norv turner resigned terry allen,he almost got marcus to don the burgundy and gold.

i can remember that superbowl too.what i remember more than anything from that season is the nfc championship win over staubach and the cowboys. charlie taylor beating charlie waters on the post, waters diving after taylor, and breaking his arm,and the over the hill gang making staubach run for his life all day at rfk. |
Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
38-9...GAG...I was in shock for a week...all the pain of that loss was erased in the second quarter of Super Bowl XXII, though... :food-smil

Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
That was a painful loss, especially for me living in the Bay Area, first the 49ers almost came back to beat us in the playoffs despite our 21-0 lead into the 4th quarter. I think the team got cocky and over confident after having an unbelievable season and rolling over almost everyone, second I heard that Joey T. was out partying all night and was hungover ( I believe it by the way he played) The next week at the Pro-bowl he gets the MVP of the Pro-bowl game, he should of saved that game for the SB.

Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
I was 11 or 12 years old and my parents left us at their friends house to watch it while they went out. I was so depressed to watch the game at some cold house I'd never been to before. The other kids in the house couldn't care less about the Superbowl! Man it sucked. And losing so huge. It still is a horrible memory for me...

Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
if we won that game that skins team would have been considered one of the best ever
|
Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
You are correct. We got killed that game though...

Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
I still remember how painful I felt during those three or four hours when I was a kid. It was horrific.

Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
The Raiders were stealing our signals. It's so obvious now. Jack Squirek has said one of the coaches told him the screen pass was coming.

Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
I was like eight years old. I remember sitting in the floor watching the game and crying! My mom said, "Oh, it's just a game!" I informed her it wasn't just a game, it was the Super Bowl! As good as the Redskins were during that season, it felt like an episode of the Twilight Zone!

the skins and raiders had played earlier that year at rfk,and they got an 80 yard gain to joe washington out of that same play.they were'nt stealing signals they just remembered that play from earlier in the year.the redskins were due a bad game, and unfortunatley it happened that superbowl sunday! |
Re: Remember The Skins vs. The Raiders in the Super Bowl?
I had an uneasy feeling as soon as Hayes' punt was blocked
And it sucked that we missed the extra point on Riggins' touchdown, so it looks like all we got was 3 field goals. If I recall correctly, Tim Hasselbeck's dad blocked that extra point |
