Early Line for Wash/NE Game
Oct. 28 Washington
1:15 p.m. at New England
Favorite NE NE NE
Point spread -16½ -16½ -16
I understand they are statistically the best team in memory, but 16½? Isn't that a little excessive?

For the record, I'd probably bet the Pats, but still...

i will be betting on the skins covering that spread. 16 1/2 is borderline an insult, i only see shit like that in college ball, definately putting some cash on the game if it stays at that.

Yea, we should finish up as a on the bubble play off team ... and the Pats are making a serious run at 19-0.

I would LOVE to see the upset though... if I recall, their first play off run, we were the last team to beat them (with the fun and duck Spurrier game plan)

The Pats have been covering those huge spreads all year.

The Skins cant score points, the Wiseguys know what they are doing, and like Matty says the Pats have been covering all year. I'll take the Pats.

I think the Skins would be a good bet though. Who have the Pats played as good as us defensively? Also, we might get Marcus Washington back which would be a huge boost.

They've played 5 of the 6 worst defenses in the league and no one even close to the skins defensively save the cowboys. I thought the line was rather insulting as well but i can understand it with the way the pats have been playing. If it's me, I'm taking the skins and the points.

This has to come down later in the week. We have the D to match up w/them.
Our offense is a different story, but 16.5 is crazy.

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

I actually see this spread going up. If Smoot and Rogers are too hurt to practice and Springs is still coping with family problems then the line could hit 20.
I hope Gibbs puts that line on every door into the practice facility. As a player on a 4-2 team you gotta be pissed to see what the oddsmakers think of you.

Chief X_Phackter 10-23-2007 09:08 AM

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

Same spread as their last game in Miami if I remember correctly. They have been huge favorites like this all year and haven't disappointed. I do believe that our D has a chance to slow them down though, but it will be up to the offense to move the ball and keep their offense off the field. I'd say we have a 50/50 chance...depending on if the offense shows up.

good point, hadn't thought of that though I read that both say they will play, no update on springs' dad yet.

We need all of them to match up w/their wr's. They haven't faced a secondary as tough as ours. The bigger concern w/our D is the pass rush. Their o-line has been awesome this year. We likely can't get much pressure w/just 4.

What is the over under line?

Huge upset, highly unlikely.

Close hard fought our guts out win, that seems more likely. I would say Skins by 3, 24 - 21

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

They haven't played any good pass Ds yet, even Dallas is a middle-of-the-league (ranked #15 in pass D) and aren't very good.

We have dropped from #3 last week to #5 in D, but still have the #1 D in the NFC.

If anyone has a chance against them (before the Colts), it's us.

But, Coach Gibbs...
"We'll probably be the biggest underdog in the history of sports," coach Joe Gibbs said Monday. "Has anything held up against them? Do you have a game plan that will work against them? If you do, leave it here. Because I don't think anybody else has got one right now. We're going to struggle hard."
I'm pretty sure they are 7-0 ATS. The only team that I think was close to covering was Clevleland (I'm pretty sure that was 16.5, and they won by 17).....

I mean sure its an "insult" and great locker room material....but these guys deserved to be favored by that much. I'm glad, I like being the big dogs.

No, that spread is NOT excessive.

16.5 may seem high but like somebody said they have covered every single spread this year. They were 16.5 on the road against Miami. I know it's Miami but I don't think I have ever seen a home team in the NFL get 16.5.

You can count on them scoring around 28 to 31 points and the oddsmakers look at us scoring around 13 or 14.

16 1/2 is not excessive. I've NEVER in my life bet against the Skins, (once won about $300 in a pool because I took the Skins over Rams, when they were the Greatest Show on Turf, and no one else did) but if I had to bet this game I'd parlay NE & the Over.

scowan 10-23-2007 10:28 AM

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

My guess is the odds makers have it about right. They figure the Pats are good for 30 and the Skins are good for about 14. The 1/2 is thrown in there to mess everyone up.

The bottom line is the Patriots will not score less than 4 TDs at home. The Skins have to find a way to intercept Brady (very hard this year) or create some turnovers to have a chance. THEN the Offense has to do something with those turnovers and score 4 or more TDs itself.

pats have had 16.5 spreads for the past 5 weeks with the exception of dallas and that was 5.5

And being the number 1 D in the junior conference isnt saying much now is it

If the Skins O continues to be inept the D will be gassed by the mid-third quarter. If the Skins D is gassed things could get ugly.

So, the 4-2 Washington Redskins are equivalent to the 0-7 Dolphins?

The Patriots have played ONE team with a winning record.

Again, please don't confuse these statements with a belief that we are going to roll up on the Pats. If I were a betting man, I'd hit NE. I just think that number is pretty stunning, and says quite a bit about the confidence the gambling community has in New England.

I think it has more to do with 23pt win avg.

Bottom line this game means nothing more for skins than bragging rights and to make fans feel good about their team, but it will probably have no impact on nfc standings. Except maybe for common opponents if it gets that far

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

The Pats offense is averaging 40 points a game vs. the Skins 20. 16.5 is taking into account the Skins defense...considering the Pats have averaged 48 over the last 2 games. The oddsmakers want people to put the money on the Skins bringing the spread down, knowing damn well the odds are against it.

I think it is pretty unlikely the Redskins will score more than 24-27 points against the Pats, but I don't think you are giving our defense the respect it has earned. Every team that goes against us says, after the game, that our defense was the best they'd faced. They are causing a lot of turnovers, allowing few points, hitting pretty damn hard, and are allowing the fewest yards per play in the entire NFL. I have a lot of respect for your offense and suspect that it will score a lot of points, but I don't think you're paying close attention to what our defense can do.

line is about 16 i think...i'd expect it to widen, simply bc the pats hype machine coupled with our POOR offensive showing...we'll see...

i think anything under 20 is reasonable...

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

I think anything over 14 is a little unreasonable. This is NFL after all. Yes the Pats beat every team they have played by 2 TDs or more, but could you predict that? Would anyone have bet money that the Pats would have done that at the beginning of the year? Only the most extreme homers would. Is anyone willing to predict that the Pats will continue this production for the entire year? It's simple: it is FAR more likely that the Pats will NOT do this for every remaining game in the season, than otherwise.

I'm sorry, but I'm in the "any given Sunday" camp. I truly believe that every team has a chance to beat any other team, any given week.

Big surprise irish....I know this thread is about the spread...but have you predicted the Skins to win any games so far this year!?
IMO....-16, -16.5,-17...is too much! Like most are saying, they have yet to play a defense as good as ours. And while our offense is struggling. We will not "lose by that much" hehe Sucks those words even came out of my mouth...I need to go back and read and re-read 12th's post http://www.redskinswarpath.com/locker-room/20450-12ths-5-reasons-why-skins.html.....it gives me faith and gets me pumped up!

Didn't Dallas come within 21?

I think it's a safe bet we will cover.

Chief X_Phackter 10-23-2007 05:48 PM

Re: Early Line for Wash/NE Game

16 or 17 points is reasonable considering Vegas.

However,

The Pats have played against defenses currently ranked the following:

32nd (Cleveland)
31st (Buffalo)
29th (Cincinnati)
28th (NY Jets)
27th(Miami)
16th (Cincinnati)
and
7th (Dallas)

Washington would probably be 7-0 too.

IMO they will probably be looking past Washington to their matchup with Indy the following week...it happens, especially since Indy has beat them the past three meetings (by the way Indy is 11-0 going back to last year).

I think Washington will surprise and frustrate them in the first half and keep it close. The second half is anyone's guess. All I can say is they better do a better job of making adjustments (or sticking to what is working) in the second half of this game, or the Pats will run away with it in the end. I hope this is the week the offense begins to click. It has been proven twice (really three times) that our defense can't keep us in the game for four quarters.
