Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles has a concussion and it was uncertain Wednesday if he'll play in New York's game against Washington this weekend.
Coach Eric Mangini addressed Coles' injury during a conference call with Redskins beat writers. Mangini didn't mention Coles in his earlier news conference with Jets writers. "Any time you have an injury it is scary," Mangini said. "With a guy like Laveranues who is so tough, you have to be careful and make sure you go through the same process that you would go through with every other player. That is what we are doing." The Jets wide receiver didn't practice Wednesday and wouldn't address the injury because it's against team policy. Mangini was unsure if Coles will be ready to play Sunday against the Redskins. "We will go through the process and look at him throughout the course of the week and evaluate him when we get a lot closer to the game," Mangini said. Coles was injured last Sunday with 7:41 left in the Jets' 13-3 loss to Buffalo when he jumped to catch a pass from Chad Pennington and was immediately hit in the middle of the back by Terrence McGee. Coles' chest and head slammed to the turf and he stayed face-down for several minutes. He was eventually able to walk off the field, but didn't return. Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
I honestly cannot see Coles sitting this one out. Coles has too much beef with our team, or rather its ownership, to let a concussion stop him from exacting vengeance.

Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
It might not be his call to make. Just depends on how serious the concussion is.
|
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
Say what you want about Coles and the way he left here, he is as tough as they come, and if he can play he will.

Coles was always one of my favorite players when he was with the team. The guy is tough and, although people said he was washed up, the guy has proven that he can still play. He's been pretty productive despite playing with guys like Bollinger and Pennington (who is efficient, but can't throw past the 1st down sticks). |

I'm glad we traded him because between Coles and Gardner, the two of them couldn't catch a cold if they shared a water bottle all winter. We complain about drops this year...we have short memories...it's NOTHING this year compared to when those two guys were our WRs. Then, there was Taylor Jacobs... |
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
Coles was probably our best receiver in the last 10 yrs (except Moss)

I have every game the Redskins played during the Spurrier years on tape (prior to getting my DVD recorder) and when I watch old tapes of Coles I am always impressed. The only time Coles would drop one was when we was getting blown up and even then he would usually hand onto the ball. Does anyone remember when Coles got absolutely demolished going over the middle for a pass from Ramsey and fomer-Eagles safety Michael Lewis just trucked him? Coles caught the ball, got up, and did his signature 1st down pose. |

That's not saying much. Moss is our best since Monk/Clark/Sanders, but our WRs have been incredibly weak for a decade, including Coles. Henry Ellard would have to be third. :cheeky-sm |
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
Coles is definitely a tough SOB, but he's not the big play guy that he was hyped up to be earlier in his career. He's a good possession WR. Whoever clocked him at 4.35 in college needs to recalibrate that stop watch.

My favorite Coles moment was when he ran down that interception in that Seattle game in 2003. It was 14-3 and that score would have put the game out of reach. Coles forced the fumble and I think we ended up scoring a TD on that drive. Wilbon wrote a column that week praising Coles as the best player on the team. |
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
I also recall Coles getting rocked by Ray Lewis, I don't think he bounced right back up after that one but I do remember that he held on to the ball.

Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
maybe Danny boy can send him that big screen he promised him a few years back to watch the game at home!

He bounced back up when Michael Lewis rocked him on Sunday night football but the Ray Lewis hit was nasty he had to get stiches. |

In his two years in Washington, Coles had 90 catches and 82 catches, and that was with below average play from the quarterback position. He was a good receiver while he was here and he was tough as nails. Don't pay so much attention to the Dan Snyder media machine, that tries to diminish the accomplishments of every decent player that wants out of Washington. |

He had a lot of key drops too. Not as many as Gardner, but too many. I admit, he WAS a tough guy, but that doesn't always get the job done. Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
Buster,
You don't think he's still a tough guy. In my opinion, Coles is the toughest WR in the league. |
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
Yes all that being considered about Coles and his mental and physical toughness.
That not withstanding, but are there not NEW league rules with regard to concussions? I thought I heard something about it during the off season from the owners meetings. They voted on concussions and that once a player is diagnosed with a concussion, depending on the severity, it is mandatory that they sit out a pre-determined number of games. I may be incorrect, but concussions in the league have become a very hot topic from the league standpoint. Coles may not have a choice about playing or not, there may be a league rule that forbids it. Anyone else have anything more, or heard this as well? |

Only one other receiver(Henry Ellard) did that between 1991 and 2003, so to claim that he was a poor receiver is ridiculous. He didn't have a ton of touchdowns in his second season, but neither did anyone else on that offense. |

What I think they did is make all the teams follow a specific pattern while dealing with concussions. Something like making players go through all the tests medically before ever having them step back on the field. |
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
I think it would be smart for him to sit this one out... esp. w/ ST and LL looming in the secondary
|
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
not to high jack , but.... while i am pleased with our defense( other then last week) what has Laron Landry done as far as big hits? the only one i remember cost the skins 15 yards. and Taylor has turned into a interception machine, but isn't having the big, jacked up hits he usually has.

Landry had a good hit around the goal line on 4th down to basically end the Philly game. And is it really a bad thing that Taylor is an interception machine? I also miss the hits, but an interception has a much bigger impact on the game. |
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
i am not arguing. but it seems like those big hits have disappeared, and our defense is a helluva alot better without them. it also seems like guys are flying to the ball again
|
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
With each of those big hits in the past came 5 or 6 missed tackles or interception. Its coming ST going to jack someone up and I'm betting its this week!!
|
Re: Jets' Coles may sit out vs. Redskins with concussion
The thing is that EVERYONE in the NFL knows what ST can do... so that huge hit always has the poss. of being just 1 play away and believe me every WRs we play knows hes back there, and anyone who watched LL at LSU know the same thing.... it can happen on any given play
