Let's talk about the onsides kick today
Hell of a call if you ask me, very ballsy call in fact.
At that point in the game we were down 17-6 with about 5 minutes to go in the first half. If we don't recover the Jets are in prime field position and could have put the game away with a TD. Instead it only leads to 3 points, but in the grand scheme of the game it was a big play and a gutsy call. For all the criticism the team takes for not being aggressive enough, let's at least give some props for this one. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
It was ugly, but we were lucky to have the Rock back and save our behinds with his recovery.
|
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
I thought the two pt conversion was more gutsy.

How so? That's a pretty easy decision to make in that situation. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
Gutsy call. I like that they scouted that and gave it a shot. Big momentum booster, and nice play by Rock to recover. They didn't quite hit it where they wanted, but they practiced it all week in scouting the tendencies of one of the Jets coverage guys. Well done.
(Oh, and what was that fake field goal fake to get a delay penalty thingy???) |

Really? How many times have we all seen false starts way down in the redzone and the line of scrimage pushed back 5 or 10 yards? Or how many times have we looked rushed in similar situations and the play is botched? The call showed more confidence in our guys and they stepped up. |

Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
Either way, the Jets needed a FG and if you don't go for 2 a FG wins it for them. Easy call to make.
|
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
The 2-pt conversion is strictly dictated by score there. Kicking puts you up 2--that's no better than being up 1--a FG beats both. The 2-pt puts you at 3--a FG only ties.
PS We should use our 2-pt conversion play on short-yardage inside the 10--it works better! |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
The 2pt call also showed confidence in JC specifically. After three fumbles under pressure last week and the risk of getting picked (in which either scenario could lead to a Jets run back TD) they put the ball in Campbell's hands.
The ultra-conservative, sometimes suspect playcalling in other games would have been more toward settling for the extra pt. and putting it on the defense to keep NY out of field goal range. It was a good call and a good play. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
I liked the onsides kick. Finally a little bit of guts. Unfortunately, it was one of the few things to be happy about after this win.

AS far as the call... hell yeah it was gutsy. I said it in the game thread, but if you call a conservative offense when your d is playing lights out, you have to step it up when your d is struggling. I do hope GW can get these guys back on track. they did get the job done, but did not look like the same unit we saw prior to the pats game... i wonder if the pats gave everyone enough film to watch to expose us for the rest of the year.... |

Would those necessarily be my thoughts standing on the sidelines? How about no, Scott. But ultra-conservative play-calling has sort of been the standard, wouldn't you say, Scott? |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
you cant score a td on an extra point try... when you intercept it the play is dead...

You're missing the point. There is only one play to run there--2 pt conversion. Every coach in the NFL would run it, and would be properly criticized if they didn't. Since kicking does you NO GOOD THERE, you might as well try it. As for picks and fumbles--that could happen on any play. By your logic, JC shouldn't have touched the ball today. Either he can play, and you run your offense, or you bench him. But once the decision is made to play him, in that situation, you go for 2--every time. |

My bad. On the other hand, I think there are some players who've forgotten that little rule too - I remember a pick on conversion I think from last year where the dude took off down the field. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
there's a more pressing issue at hand.... who's "scott"???
|
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
C'mon, who can forget the line How about no, Scott.
Maybe it's just because my visiting relatives we're watching Austin Powers today. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
I loved that call to go for the onsides kick today, it was very ballsy. The play before when Gibbs kicked the field goal I was pretty much saying Gibbs didn't have any balls because I wanted him to go for the touchdown instead of going for the field goal, but I gladly ate my words when he did the onsides kick lol. It was very refreshing to see this team do something that's not considered the norm.

Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
the kick seemed to swing the MO and get things going great call if you ask me
|
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
great call, im not so sure about the execution. i think rock saved us from a really crappy kick. but it took balls to call it
|
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
Very aggresive gutsy call and well executed. Definate changing point in the game.

Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
I wish they had a special teams player of the year, Thank god for Rock. It was a good call. Our team handled the game well, considering getting scored on right off the bat. It was pretty, but most of our games aren't
|
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
I think it was a great call. The Jets looked stunned, which seems to be the intent of nonsides kick at that point in a game. Great call and I wouldn't be all that upset if the Jets had recovered it instead because it at least showed the team is trying to win.

You are correct. We won. But I just want to see more of that type of attitude. Outside of that onside kick we played not to loose on offense yesterday. It was good enough to beat the Jets. But it's not going to be good enough to beat alot of the teams we have coming up. But it looks like Gibbs is just going to ride CP the rest of the way and see where it takes us. Not a bad thing I guess. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
i liked the call to onsides it . . . . they got up early on us and when they got to 17 points i was starting to think we would need our D to score one for us to win it b/c we know our O averages 13-14 pts a game . . .
mtredskins - maybe your having a bad brain day but your in the right place, lots of smart football talk to read and learn from on this site go skins |

Going for the 2-point conversion would mean we were only up 1 point, but getting it puts us up 3 points. Being up 1 point vs being up 2 points is irrelevant, being up 3 points is a big deal. There's nothing gutsy or ballsy about that call, that's just common sense. |

Kinda reminded me of the Miami game. We just kept pounding and by the 4th quarter the Jets were clearly on the ropes and that's when Portis gashed them. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
The onside kick was a nice touch...however, it was nice to see the Skins NOT divert from the game plan being down and continued to give the Jets a steady diet of Portis down their throats...

Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
It was a great, and yes, gutsy call.
I didn't see anyone mention when Sean Taylor was returning that short FG. He ALMOST broke it for a TD and it probably would've been if he hadn't dropped the ball. We also went for 2. It seems Gibbs is taking more chances this year than in years past. We used to punt or kick a FG every 4th down, this year, we're going for it a lot more than we used to. Good to see. |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
Considering this coaching staff, the decision for an onsides kick was nothing short of astounding.
Gibbs takes that kind of gamble maybe once every 3 seasons or so. |
Not to discredit Taylor's ability to return the ball but is there a reason why you wouldn't put someone like Randle El or Cartwright back there? |
Re: Let's talk about the onsides kick today
^ I guess because ST is a defender and if the Jets had tried to pull a fake FG play, I'd rather have Taylor back there to stop it instead of a WR.
Taylor is great at running back fumbles and picks, he's done it many times before and he nearly busted this play open for a TD...if he had only held onto the ball. |
