Does Brandon Lloyd REALLY deserve all this hate?

Ok..before i get all the criticism think about some of these things:

1. It's only his second year with the Redskins and alot of players take a bit of time to transition from one team to another.

2. Despite low production in his receiving yards as of last year, Lloyd was overlooked on his blocking skills...I can recall countless times when he threw a block that set up a big play for his teamates.. eg. Clinton Portis @ Home Dallas Game; Portis Big Reception @ Texans; 1st Santana Moss Reception for TD playing Jaguars and etc.. they ARE there if you look..

3. I know that alot of the coaches and players talked about how much time and effort he put in this offseason in his workouts to gain weight and produce this season...

4. It seems like all the players seem to genuinly "like" Brandon as if he's been accepted as one of the guys. It doesnt sound like they are just saying that but more as if they are sincere and want him to succeed, and not as the "Locker Room Cancer" that hes been labeled.

5. The responses from alot of the fans make me believe that people think Lloyd is a "bad" guy but if you look at him on the sidelines hes jumping around staying positive; hes doing charity work (there was that whole thing on NFL total access portraying his stuff) and it leads me to believe that the interpretations of this guy are wrong.

Sure, his production has dropped alot this year.. but when has been in the game alot? He's had two long balls that were poorly thrown by Campbell in his direction...(one in the Miami game which was intercepted & the other overthrown off his fingertips in the Packers game) Honestly, they need to just put him in BETTER situations where he can be more productive rather than keep him on the sidelines...

1) Its his second year with the skins but it's his 5th season in the NFL. He should know how to catch a ball by his 5th season. Yet time after time this guy drops passes. He was known for spectacular catches in SF but all of a sudden his hands go MIA? Get out of here.

2) While WRs are expected to block on runs, that's not his job. His job is to go out there and catch. CP can throw a bad ass block, but he can also do his job and run when it's expected of him. Brandon Lloyd can't do shit even when given the opportunity.

3) Offseason is good. But when you show up at a team meeting late and then leave and then don't even show up to the damn away game. You're obviously showing you don't give a shit about the team. The guy doesn't even suit up for some games.

4) I don't think anyone is gonna outright say they hate the guy in public. That would look awful for people to get the perception that things in the locker room aren't meshing well. For the sake of the team and for keeping things light they are gonna point out his positives and not say anything bad about the guy.

5) Frankly if you're the damn benchwarmer on a team, you need to be active and stay positive for the team. They teach you that shit in high school. I never played varsity sports, but if the team was being productive and out there playing their asses off, my coach would be damned if you're not pumped up cheering them on.

Brandon Lloyd isn't a TERRIBLE person, he's probably an alright guy. But when it comes to being focused on work and the team, the dude's a douche. Of course he's only been thrown to twice, he hasn't done anything all year. I'd be surprised if he actually studied tape after games and has done anything to better himself as a player prior to the regular season. You say they need to put him in better situations? How is coaching supposed to do that? Brandon Lloyd needs to put Brandon Lloyd in better situations. If he wants to catch the ball, get out there, get open and catch the ball. I'm tired of coddling this guy. If he wants to play so bad, prove it.

We sure are desperate at the WR position to give this clown another chance. This better be his last chance whether he makes a lot of money or not. In the pre-cap days he would have been gone last year.

Re: Does Brandon Lloyd REALLY deserve all this hate?

Good argument. However, the same things could be said for Thrash who makes 1/5 of what Lloyd does. And Thrash is an excellent special teamer and I've never seen Lloyd on any ST group.
And the "effort" he showed on the interception against Miami is enough for me to hope he remains inactive for the rest of the year.

Can't prove anything if you don't play. I'm not a Lloyd fan but I'm a fan of reality, in some instances. Lloyd simply hasn't dropped pass after pass, as you say. He's about the only one who hasn't. I don't even recall him dropping a single pass this year. Can you refresh my memory or explain why you say he has?

If he's so spectacular please tell me why he's not playing. He had a lackluster year last year, and obviously has been doing something wrong this year to keep his ass benched.

He deserves a break, he hasn't had a chance to do anything yet. Give him time to cool off, a chance to prove himself, and viola, back to an ok receiver.

Re: Does Brandon Lloyd REALLY deserve all this hate?

The guy's in his 5th season! 5 years.

Campbell's only STARTING this year and you can tell the guy's got talent. Both Lloyd and Campbell have had equal amount of time to study and get better. They're both studying the same plays, and SHOULD be putting in about the same amount of time to better themselves. The only difference is one guy's throwing. And the other guy's catching. Yet one guy is out there throwing balls Sunday in and Sunday out. Yet where's the other guy? Hmmm...

Yes, he does deserve the hate.

He doesn't go over the middle. He doesn't practice hard. He misses meetings. He doesn't put in the time to learn how to run routes well.

See a trend? The guy doesn't care.

This reminds me of an old conundrum: How much wood could a wood chuck chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

Answer: More than Brandon Lloyd, because the wood chuck, like James Thrash, is a super-smart blue collar guy who fights his guts out--no one ever gave that wood chuck anything. He earned it. The lord blessed us with a pretty great wood chuck, IMO.

Re: Does Brandon Lloyd REALLY deserve all this hate?

It's all Lloyds fault, we know Moss can play and what's happened to him this year? I just can't judge a WR in this offense with Campbell throwing to him, our offense is a joke to blame a reciever just isn't fair. Patten had some pretty nice numbers before he arrived from the Pats and did nothing, sorry to get on Lloyd is unfair, I doubt he would be questioned right now if he had Manning or Brady throwing him the ball.

And if he is that bad, well then blame Gibbs, he's the one who just had to have him.

Daseal 11-06-2007 01:13 AM

Re: Does Brandon Lloyd REALLY deserve all this hate?

I disagree completely with people who thinks Lloyd deserves the hate skins fans give him. I've been hoping and hoping we'd give Brandon Lloyd a real chance to show us something. So far we've seen him get a deep ball once every three games. Yes, his hands aren't glue, but on this team no ones are. Even James Trash let one hit him right in the numbers last week. Santana Moss has been dreadful, and ARE started hot but seems to have cooled.

Lloyd made a really nice move in the pats game to get about 10 yards, then we didn't try to get him the ball again. Has Lloyd made some mistakes? Of course. Does he deserve a chance to be on the field and try to show us something? I think so.

He was late to a meeting, that's probably the worst thing he's done since he came to DC. I'd love to know within a two year stretch, how many of you haven't been late to some sort of an event, even a work event. Sometimes the cards don't fall in your favor and things go wrong. Even athletes can mis-set an alarm clock or get stuck in traffic. It said he came late, didn't skip it. These things happen, and you should be punished for it, but acting like this is enough to ship him out -- please.

To whoever above said it's not the WRs job to block. Ask the Steelers if WRs block. Ask Portis if he'd like to have a nice block downfield by a WR. Blocking is a huge part of the WRs game. Figure a particular WR is targeted on maybe 10-20% of the offensive plays, the rest of the time his job is to keep his man(men) busy and that includes blocking. That's like saying we lose nothing in the game when Portis comes out for Betts in passing situations, it's not a RBs job to block. Idiotic. It takes all 11 players to make a team tick.

I just find it ironic that Brandon Lloyd was a huge character guy in DC when he first got here, all about winning, worked hard, etc, etc. Then he wears a hat that said FUCK to a meeting, then it's all downhill. He all of a sudden never tries, never works. We knew we were getting a WR that doesn't have the best hands in the world with Lloyd. He can make big catches for you if you give him a chance, with very solid YAC. Yet people complain he doesn't go over the middle. He's on a receiving core with Santana Moss and Antwan Randel-El and we're upset that Lloyd doesn't go over the middle?

I just think this guy needs a chance on the field and some looks. If he doesn't pan out, so be it, I'll join the rest of you. I just feel up until this point, he has an incomplete, not an F.

Re: Does Brandon Lloyd REALLY deserve all this hate?

Brandon Lloyd has never been a Pro Bowl caliber receiver. even in his best season in San Fran he only had a little over 700 yards and 5 TD's. So why did we pick him up? Because he had a streak of good games before he hit Free Agency. The coaching staff saw potential in him to be a number 2 receiver to take some pressure off of Moss. He has not lived up to his potential plain and simple. What I think bothers people is that we expected him to do the same thing here. Obviously our expectations were unrealistic. Whether it is the scheme, depression, or his lack of intrest I do not know, but he has not produced.

Who knows, he might be better off playing for somebody else. To keep dogging him week in and week out is not going to make him anymore productive or want to stay here in Washington. Surely, we can find some better topics to discuss. BL is not a factor on gameday, so lets leave it alone.

I understand that we lost draft picks to get they guy and we will not get them back. We also lost draft picks on guys like Sartz and Palmer who didn't even make the practice squad. Are we complaining about that? No, because there is nothing we can do about it. At least BL is still on the team and contributes in some ways (primarily on the scout team offense). Maybe if he does go next season we can recoup something for him, if not there is nothing we can do about it. He hasn't produced in a season and a half. To constantly beat this dead horse is silly.

Bottom line, he wears a uniform and works for our team. Just support him. Deep down everyone wants to see him do well because the skins will be better if he does.

And to whoever said Lloyd is a good blocker, what are you talking about? He's one of the most ineffective blocking receivers in the league. Are you guys watching the same guy as me?

This reminds me of the Lavar situation, in that people see an athletically gifted man not playing and choose not to really consider the reasons why? Well, in both cases you have people who aren't willing to put the time in to master the schemes, who want to run around out there and do their own thing, who - in spite of apparent athletic gifts - don't give the team a better chance to win. If they did they would be playing.

Daseal,

I have seen you rely on this argument several times before and assert that, somehow, this caused him to go into Gibbs' doghouse and that we on the Warpath turned on him because of it.

With all due respect, I think you are just wrong about it. About the same time he did that, the article (which I can't remember now) came out that everyone in the clubhouse hated the guy, that he had done stuff to piss everybody off and that he just was gonna do his own thing no matter what the coaches said. I never had heard of the hat until you brought it up (several times) but I, and several others, had read and commented on the article.

Yes, he came in talking all the right stuff publicly and got everybody fired up. Including me - I ate that stuff up. Throw in his highlight reel and he looked like the next incarnation of Gary Clark. Unfortunately, it turned out that, although he talked the talk, he didn't walk the walk.

Does he get open? Maybe. However, if you were the QB and he quit on half the routes he ran - would you a) trust he was gonna be where he was supposed to be and risk the pick if he wasn't? b) spend a precious half second looking for him with guys bearing down on you? My answer to both would be no. If I can't count on him to be where he is supposed to be, when he is supposed to be there, then he is a desparation option in my progressions nothing more.

Don't give me the crap about not having a chance. Golston, Alexander, Yoder - these guys had less opportunity than Lloyd and yet, somehow, have made bigger impacts.

Daseal, I'm a bit surprised you're that supportive of Loyd, as I know from reading your posts that you're well informed.

I can only suggest that you look up JLC's Skins insider & read a post he did on Loyd a few weeks ago. I trust his reporting, of course that's up to you.
He said that Loyd was "dropping f bombs" on wr coach Stan Hixon in his first OTAs, was rude to staff at Redskin Park & basically didn't do anything to show coaches he wants to play.

Add to that his tantrums in games last year, his poor history w/teamates in SF and this recent stuff. I just don't see any way to defend him.

Might make a list of worst trades ever some day.

I've heard elsewhere all the same stuff that JLC said...and then some. Lloyd is a strange dude it seems. Sure seems to have the talent but lacks discipline and maturity

If the Skins knew this stuff about BL (and I'm sure they did) why did they ever sign him in the first place?!

JoeRedskin: I bet if you look at targeted, Yoder has more than Lloyd. Golston has been a beast since his rookie year and getting a lot of play time.

Freddy, I've read the article by JLC. Does Lloyd have problems, most definitely. However, when it comes to game day it seems like he's there, upbeat, and helpful. I have seen lloyd put in some very solid blocks, etc.

Could Lloyd be a total bust, absolutely. I just don't feel he's had a chance to be used like he should be here in DC. I have a feeling he'll be another player that leaves DC and kinda explodes into at least a solid player on a team, if not a very good #2. He has his down side, definitely. His personal stuff is a problem.

I don't want to say I'm completely going to bat for this guy, because I don't know him behind the scenes. Everything coming out of DC media wise seems horribly skewed to me. Especially with Gibbs in office, the double talk is at an alltime high (this isn't a Gibbs bash, it's the truth. He says a lot and nothing at the same time. So does his team.) I just feel that we should give him a chance, it's frustrating never getting a look in the offense, does he blow up sometimes, probably, but I bet the guy just wants to win.

at this point with the way our offense stinks, why not give him some plays. We really need to line up with more 3 wr sets. Dont let the stats from the Jets game mislead you. The Jets are horrible defensively. Against good teams coming up, I think we need to spread them out and run from those sets. 3WR sets with Moss, El, and Lloyd. I still think the kid can play. If we get him in the game and let him get some reps I think he could end up a productive guy. I am in no means giving the guy a free pass. He does seem like a head case. But look at what a happy WR can get you. The other Moss (Randy) , TO both are happy and both are producing. I am in no way comparing Lloyd to either of those guys, but if you have a happy player, then they produce better. that is just todays NFL with the Divas out there. and Lloyd has the attitude of a Diva, just not the stats to back it up. I think for a WR to be productive he has to have the chances to catch the ball. they have to develop a rhythm and he has not been given the plays to get to that point. Our offense stinks with out him, it couldn't be much worse with him??

we can alway wait until the other Moss is a FA next year?

Definitely agree.

Please stop with this madness.

I guess I think he had ample opportunities last year but that, as I said before, he hasn't earned the trust of the guys throwing him the ball. It seems pretty well documented that he gives up on routes he doesn't like. If that's the case, what QB is going to be able to count on him. If the QB doesn't look for you b/c he can't trust you, then you could be standing alone in the endzone and you just won't be seen.

Lloyd has to earn both the coaches and the QB's trust to get an opportunity, he clearly hasn't done that.

Because, like every coach in the league, Gibbs saw a talented guy and thought he could reach him. He's made great strides with the disturbed in the past (Manley, Riggins, et al.) so it wasn't out of line to think he could do good things here. It hasn't happened.

Yup, this happens all the time.

Why do troubled players get 2nd and 3rd chances in this league? It's because they are talented guys and every coach thinks they are the ones that can turn a guy around.

It's not the first time we've seen this and certainly not the last.

I remember what Gibbs did with those guys but as much as I hate to say it, that is ancient history. Gibs was a lot younger and closer to their age. I gotta believe BL would listen to Gibbs when it comes to football because Gibbs is his coach but when it comes to life BL sees Gibbs as an out of touch old man.

I think with all the free agents out there it was very foolish for a team that has barely sniffed the playoffs in 15 years to take a chance like this and give away 2 draft picks for the opportunity to take this chance. Hopefully someday the Skins will look around and see what successful franchises do to be successful.

Didnt both Lloyd and El have similar numbers last year? We all thought they were both busts. Well El has been given a chance this year, he has done some great things. Lloyd half assed in the opening game and he is no longer a the viable WR we paid him to be? Put the guy out there, the skins already payed him, even as a decoy, if they leave him wide open.. throw it to him. Christ! Thrash cant get open and when he is, he drops it! But damn Thrash does "fight his guts out" when dropping passes.
