Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

I had the oppertunity this week to not only DVR the game, but rewatch it and chart every offensive play.

I seperated each play into successful and unsuccessful rankings under the following definitions:

1st down plays to gain 45% of the yards needed for a first down or TD

2nd down plays to gain 60% of the yards needed for a first down or TD

3rd and 4th down plays need to gain a first down or a TD to be successful.

The goal for an offense under these definitions is to be successful on about half their plays. That's the benchmark for a good day. The Redskins ran 70 plays and were successful on 34 of them by the aforementioned definitions. That's a 49% success rate which is pretty good. The Jets do have the worst defense in the league though, but what I noticed is that #52 MLB David Harris played so well in his first NFL start that it wasn't quite like playing the old Jets defense, so I am happy with 49% of our offensive plays being successful.

Here are some of my key observations from the game:

The Jets matched our receiver personnel by going into the nickel whenever we took Sellers and Lorenzo Alexander out of the game.
The Jets spent the entire regulation period by keeping both safeties deep and a non factor in the run game.
Al Saunders called a great game. Both times we took deep shots down the field, we caught the Jets firing their nickel back, and their strong safety respectively. Both could have been TD's with slightly better throws.
The offensive line didn't do a particularly good job in the run game, but took advantage of a great matchup. With only 6 guys in the box most of the game, the line was able to put a hat on every guy in the box and allow Portis to attack downhill.
We missed a lot of blocks in the run game, but almost never had multiple breakdowns on the same play. Portis picked up his guys and did not allow himself to be arm tackled very often
Injuries are not the reason this offensive line is struggling. Wade and Fabini had pretty good games on Sunday: Wade performed the best of all the lineman. Samuels didn't have his best game Sunday, but Kendall and Rabach were the main culprits when a running play fell apart or when pass pro broke down.
Kendall and Rabach are doing a horrible job sorting out the backside blitz. Four times, they stuck Samuels with two guys to block. Twice, Campbell was able to avoid the pressure and make a play, but the two other times resulted in a sack and an interception.
The variance in the results was solely in the way Campbell was able to recognize the blitz. When he does, good things happen. When he doesn't, catastrophe happens.
Jason Campbell was a lot better in the first half than he was in the second. In second half, I charted 5 mistakes in the 2nd half from Campbell, but NONE after the inteception. After the pick, the coaches appeared to take the game out of his hands entirely, by running with great success
We are a much better running team when we only play with one receiver. We had success in the passing game too when we tried it.
The disallowance of audibles in this offense is killing the running game. The Jets rarely had enough guys in the box to handle our runs, but on the few plays they did, it was blatently obvious what the result would be presnap.
Portis' vision is lacking. He doesn't always go where the best hole is. Betts' vision is a lot better, however, Portis runs a lot harder.
Campbell's accuracy is worse than it was 4 weeks ago. Period.
Here are some defensive observations. I went back and watched the Packers game again and compared it to the current defense:

I understand we are down Carlos Rogers, but the team that shut down Favre and Co., no longer exists.
The defensive line, comprised of the same 4 people, isn't producing anywhere near the same result.
The coverage is not tight. Even when we blitzed the house a bunch on Sunday, we gave Clemens plenty of room to make a timing throw. Favre never had any such room.
We always took away the Green Bay receivers' first cut, now we pretty much allow the catch.
Kedric Golston can't play at this level. Not yet at least.
The Jets had a lot of success sealing Rocky and Daniels inside on runs to get the corner. Rocky still plays a little undisciplined at times.
The only time we enjoyed defensive success was when we got to Clemens quickly. Whenever the blitz got picked up, both Chris Wilson and Andre Carter would be so far upfield that we basically would be playing with 9. The lanes for QB scrambling could be had by anyone.
Chris Wilson and Andre Carter just can't be on the field at the same time. They both do the same damn thing every play and with decent blocking, are irrelivant.
Gregg Williams may be reverting to schematic tendencies from last year with Rogers' injury. We just don't have the horses to be a dominant pass stopping team, and according to GW, thats reason enough to not even try.
I hope this analysis gives a bit more insight into the Redskins this season, and gives you some things to look for in the future.

Having not rewatched the game I can only go off your analysis. Seems pretty solid (and time consuming). Anecdotally at least, I would agree with most of your observations. Here's a question, though. If Campbell is not as accurate as he was four weeks ago, what has changed? Has his mechanics changed? Play calling? Willingness to throw into any coverage whatsoever? And, has he been all that accurate at all this season? He has hit some nice throws, but it seems like he misses a bunch too. Not just the deep stuff. He also tends to throw high a lot and seems to overthrow Santana all the time (again, not just the deep stuff, but also that early throw at GB where Moss and to do a full extension dive and then in the NE game where Moss did a 5 yard curl that would have given the Skins a first down and Campbell threw way outside and the Skins didn't convert - those are just the two that come to mind). I like Campbell, but he just seems pretty sporadic at this point. If someone can break down what they think is the reason(s) I'd appreciate it.

damn thorough job!

I saw a lot of the same things but can't say I looked at all of it the way you did. I don't know if you can blame Kendall & Rabach for a couple of those blitzes, they were extremely well disguised. I imagine that has to be a pre snap thing, maybe rabach called em out but they still didn't see him coming.

Those passing lanes w/Carter & Wilson way upfield were a problem, but I think that's one that can be fixed. overall though it does seem the D is experiencing a market correction. GW has his work cut out for him in the next half of the season.

I unfortunately agree that JC seems less accurate as the season goes on. Maybe the coaches see this & have scaled things back accordingly.

No idea how long it's going to take before he can throw the ball efficiently again...I think we just have to keep trying it.

Offensive balance will solve all of our problems until we can find out identity. After all, if theres anything that the length of the season has shown, it's that the later on a team establishes their identity, the more likely it is their true identity.

Right now we are posing as a running team, and I really don't think that's us, but it worked last week and it could work again these next two. After that, I would hope that Campbell can establish himself as a top passer, because that certainly hasn't happened yet.

The QB is responsible for that too, and twice on Sunday, neither the QB or the OL picked up the blitz.

The QB is young, but the OL is a bunch of vets, so I shoulder the blame of the mental part of the game on them. But that's just my opinion, as the only fact is simply that the job didn't get done.

Outstanding analysis. Based on your comment that Golsten looks out of his element, I hope that Alexander can step up, and perhaps fill in more effectively in the DT rotation.

As for Campbell's inaccuracy, I'm particularly troubled with his penchant to drive our receivers toward the sideline on deep throws when the middle of the field is wide open. If he lays that ball to Santana with touch toward the post, it's an easy TD. Right now, Campbell is making the deep throws far more difficult than they need to be. Hopefully, he will improve this aspect of his game through coaches pointing it out and experience.

are the blitzes they got confused on a result of the "soft line" they ran alot in the first half?

good read. but i think the skins main problem on offense is the lack of trust in Campbell. it seems like Saunders and company are satisfied with throwing 3 yard passes. and hoping the receiver breaks some tackles, and makes a play. and we really dont still have an identity on offense. are we a power team? a passing team?

I've got to admit it, I really wanted Saunders to open up the offense a few weeks ago. But JC has been looking pretty bad these past 3-4 weeks. It's almost as though we have a totally different QB under center. He's young and hopefully things will get turned around, but our passing attack is pretty bad right now.

Overall, he did an average job and we were definately blocking better with him on the whole than without him.

In JC I see alot of the same stuff w/ alot of the other young QB's around the league. They are all just up and down. None of the young Qb's are consistent. Hell, alot of the veterans are not consistent. It's the toughest position to play in sports. We all want our guy to be the next Tom Brady. But the fact is he just isn't there yet and neither are any of the young qb's. Look how shitty Ben R. played last year? I think he threw 23 INt's. Just terrible. JC has a long way to go to be a good NFL qb. Right now he is just average playing with below average WR's and that is why our offense is so conservative.

Great breakdown, especially since I haven't been able to watch any games the past couple of weeks because of work. It's interesting to see how big of a role the DB plays in GW's schematics. Glad we have more depth this season... and I pray another DB won't go down.

We all know that Gibbs hates turnovers, but what do you think that does to a young quarterbacks confidence when you handcuff him to the run for almost the entire second half, because he got hit and tossed a bad ball? Brunell was to the point that he would throw it away with the game on the line, just so he didn't take the chance of throwing a pick. Campbell is starting to display similar tendencies to the way Brunell played(lots of checkdowns, tentative on throwing long, etc.). It's starting to look like, at least to me, that the killer instinct is being trained out of the Washington quarterbacks, and that's probably a big part of the problem with the passing game.

Brian Mitchell said the same thing on the post game show. He said that all week Gibbs pounds into JCs head not to turn the ball over, so he is over thinking, and this taking too much time. That one second though of "dont throw a pick" could be the reason his downfield shots are not on time or on target.

Re: Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

On the D line, Griff only played a few snaps. From the WPost:

Defensive lineman Cornelius Griffin, limited to only two plays against the Jets after aggravating a back injury during pregame warmups, hopes to play a bigger role this week.

That hurts everything on the D and is very worrisome. I think we'll go back to some of the deeper coverage, less blitz stuff against McNabb. Hope Griff can play.

I also think that taking the ball out of JCs hands this week was also a function of the D we we're playing against--they we're begging us to run with 6 in the box, and taking away the deeper stuff for much of the game. He needs more throws to get in rhythm, IMO, like many QBs. Don't know if he's hurting--many have said that, but I'm not sure that's it. He looks (like many young QBs) to be late on the reads at times. Even on throws he makes over the middle, he's not hitting those on timing but with his arm strength. And it's not a bad move to minimize the TOs here--that's been the killer for us. It may be a self-fulfilling prophecy, though: we don't open it up because we don't have to O to recover from TOs, and we don't have the O to recover from TOs because we don't open it up.

But the point, offensively, of this game, was to establish the run. That we did. Now we need to maintain the run production (if not at this huge a number, at a good average, at least), and work JC up in the passing game. And JC has to hit some things in the long game. JUST ONE PLAY THERE MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. One TD by a bomb and everything else we do (all the "conservative" stuff) makes sense--the point is to create those shots, not to simply run and pass for short-yardage. This is lost on many pundits, IMO. If JC hits a few of those a game, his stat line and the score line look very different.

GTripp: what was the big problem in the red zone? Why couldn't they get TDs? That's another thing skewing opinion of this game--5 FGs. Just one of those is a TD and we feel much better as a team.

Re: Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

he does look like he gets too excited & puts too much on the ball sometimes, that could very well be the result of coaching but there's also a fine line between a qb rushing the play & standing pat too long.

Re: Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

i disagree about blitzing Mcnabb less. against Dallas, he could hardly move at all once the rush got to him

Re: Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

Compare JC to Romo, even parcells let Romo loose to fail. His first game was a disaster, but he came back after that & aside from the bills game, is playing really well.

JC has never had a disastrous game, unless you count the 3 fumbles v. NE (and his throws were off too), but he's never totally lit it up either.

I love JC, but sad as it is to say, what's the difference in our O now than it was w/Brunell? I think the only difference is JC's potential & scrambling ability.
GTripp: what was the big problem in the red zone? Why couldn't they get TDs? That's another thing skewing opinion of this game--5 FGs. Just one of those is a TD and we feel much better as a team.
OK, I'll answer this by taking the four regulation FG drives and reviewing the 3 play series in which they failed.

Drive I-trailing 7-0

1-10-NYJ 33 (11:25) 17-J.Campbell pass incomplete deep left to 89-S.Moss [54-V.Hobson]. Unsuccessful.

Pass pro gaffe. 5 man rush, Hobson comes untouched. Kendall and Rabach don't pick it up. Campbell escapes, and throws to Moss on the sideline, incomplete.

2-10-NYJ 33 (11:22) 26-C.Portis left tackle to NYJ 30 for 3 yards (93-K.Coleman). Unsuccessful.

Kendall missed his block.

3-7-NYJ 30 (10:37) 17-J.Campbell scrambles left tackle to NYJ 28 for 2 yards (54-V.Hobson, 50-E.Barton). Unsuccessful.

Samuels gets beat inside initially, but Kendall smartly assists him. With the DE doubled, Hobson loops around the outside untouched. They get it picked up late, but Campbell saw it and had already vacated the pocket.

Drive III

1-10-NYJ 23 (6:21) 26-C.Portis up the middle to NYJ 21 for 2 yards (52-D.Harris). Unsuccessful.

Jets put 7 in the box against 3 WRs, one of the few times they did that all game. Just one too many to block. An audible system could have prevented this, but we are too reliant on Portis to break tackles.

2-8-NYJ 21 (5:44) 17-J.Campbell pass incomplete short left to 45-M.Sellers. Unsuccessful.

Cooley sort of blocks/holds in pass pro (no call). Campbell hurried. Sellers drops ball.

3-8-NYJ 21 (5:38) 17-J.Campbell pass incomplete short left to 47-C.Cooley. Penalty on WAS-60-C.Samuels, Offensive Holding, declined. Unsuccessful.

Holding, obviously. Campbell stares down Cooley who is blanketed by the nickel and the nickel makes a good play.

Drive IV

2-4-NYJ 4 (1:12) Wash. #79 L.Alexander reports in as eligible 26-C.Portis up the middle to NYJ 4 for no gain (52-D.Harris). Unsuccessful.

Alexander just whiffs. Portis tries to spin off Alexanders guy, but its on the goal line, so no luck.

3-4-NYJ 4 (1:04) 17-J.Campbell pass incomplete short left to 26-C.Portis [54-V.Hobson]. Unsuccessful.

Campbell has no pressure, inexplicably flushes from the pocket, creates pressure for himself, and has to throw the ball away.

Drive V

1-10-NYJ 23 (11:44) 26-C.Portis up the middle to NYJ 22 for 1 yard (31-H.Poteat, 63-D.Robertson). Unsuccessful.

Nickel back comes on a run blitz, Randle El does a great job sealing him off and opening up a lane between the numbers and the sideline to drive a semi through. Portis never saw it and runs head on into Randle El's guy.

2-9-NYJ 22 (11:05) 17-J.Campbell pass incomplete deep left to 82-A.Randle El (25-K.Rhodes). Unsuccessful.

3 man rush, 3 men in route. Campbell has all day, throws into a tight window, and Kerry Rhodes makes a great play.

3-9-NYJ 22 (10:59) 17-J.Campbell pass incomplete short left to 89-S.Moss. Unsuccessful.

4 man rush by New York, Redskins put 5 guys in the pattern and the protection holds. Campbell just throws behind Moss.

So to answer your question JWSleep, there were a bunch of pass pro breakdowns in the first half once we got into FG range, and in the second half it was pretty much on the offensive backfield. Different parts of the team are just playing inconsistent right now, and we are stringing together a lot of unsuccessful plays. It's just not pretty right now.

Happy feet, not so much, but I'm talking about the completing of the passes. It's going to win you more games than it loses.

Campbell's just missing execution on too many plays. The read is there, the timing is there, the throw just isn't. It's the same problem that Brunell struggled with in 2004 when he was hiding the knee injury. Mentally, he's progressing, but he's inaccurate and the results aren't there.

Dang. Just amazing, man. Thanks for all the great analysis!!!!

That's been what Gibbs, JC, and Co. have been saying--it's not just one thing, it's some little different thing each time. Which is very frustrating. But they moved the ball well to get into the red zone, so maybe they'll fix that next!

Much respect, GTripp!

Re: Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

I want to point out that this was the underbelly of the Redskins' day, and there were a ton of times when we string together a bunch of successful plays.

The general point is that once an offense commits an unsuccessful play, it really takes a good play to be successful again. It gets tougher to enjoy success following an unsuccessful play.

The Redskins are just unable to get it started again once one guy messes up. One guy messes up, the next play the next guy messes up, and then its 4th down.

Thus is the nature of offense, however the Jets had no problem bucking this trend against us on Sunday and that's the part that really worries me.

On the point of overcoming an unsuccessful play, I thought CPs 10 yard run right after JC missed Moss on the bomb was as big a play as we had all day. I thought, damn, there goes that drive! And then CP just busted it out. Very nice.

I too am worried about the D. We were without Carlos, Washington, and Griffen, and without Smoot for some of the time. That's getting thin. Grif and Marcus gotta get back, and Smoot MUST stay healthy if we're going to have a chance. Hate to see the offense gel and the D fall apart with injuries! Hopefully, though, with London out there, things will be OK.

Portis' vision is lacking. He doesn't always go where the best hole is. Betts' vision is a lot better, however, Portis runs a lot harder.
This is the only statement I STRONGLY disagree with... I think you sorta flipped it.. in a way... Portis has the better vision and more patience for holes to develop and then will make his bursts as he reads it... Betts on the other hand has a tendancy to hit whatever is in front of him hard and take what's given to him where Portis might try and make something happen when there is seemingly nothing.
On the point of overcoming an unsuccessful play, I thought CPs 10 yard run right after JC missed Moss on the bomb was as big a play as we had all day. I thought, damn, there goes that drive! And then CP just busted it out. Very nice.
Exactly. That's one instance where we overcame. Fortunately it happened in the games most crucial hour, or we are staring 4-4 right in the face.

Here's the best offensive news: 1 drop Sunday all day, and it was by the full back.

The receivers are coming around.

If I was critiquing myself, I would have jumped all over that. :)

Portis' vision in that game was very lacking. Betts' was much better. Can I say anything conclusive from one game? I absolutely can not.

Just thought I'd add another breakdown to the conversation

Good stuff all around. I wish we could run like that every week.

Yeah, Dillweed was very into the run on his breakdown.

Nice to have al this great analysis by GTripp and PGH. How did we live before the internet and TiVo?

Re: Breakdown: Redskins-Jets

That was one of the most thoughtout breakdowns I have read in a while and with Campbell he always seems to go 11/23 or 12/26 or 15/28
