Matthew Berry "hating" Portis this week
 

Sorry if this has already been posted.

Matthew Berry, ESPN's fantasy guru and admitted Redskin fan, lists on a weekly basis those players he expects to deliver (players he "loves"), and those he expects not to (players he "hates"). He lists Portis as a "hated" player this week, with this description:

"Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins: You have no idea how much I don't want to write this. Because if my Redskins have any chance against Philadelphia, they have to run the ball. But I expect the Eagles to stack the line and make Jason Campbell try to throw his first touchdown pass to a wide receiver. The Eagles have given up only four rushing touchdowns all year and are seventh in rushing yards allowed. Sigh. I just know this game is really gonna anger me."

Well, he does have a point. Philly is going to be looking for the run.

I think it would be a good idea to come out throwing in this one to get JC in a groove early, open things up for the run, and then pound them in the 2nd half.

Speaking of that, what happened to those passes we were throwing 10-15 yards down field to Randle El early in the season. Campbell was NAILING those throws.

I don't see what's groundbreaking about the statement that Philly is going to be looking to stop the run. I mean, any team in their right mind is going to assume (rightly so) that our gameplan each revolves around getting our running game going and then playaction passing later... Obviously not having any success with our wideouts is a pretty glaring weakness that each opponent is going to try to exploit.

Donovan was making a big point out of not being the only culpable member of the Eagles for the shitty manner in which they've been playing. I don't see how that's going to rally the team around him, true or not. I think D. McNabb is auditioning for his next team at this point.

I agree with him also to a degree, but I don't agree that "we're...screwed." Sure, the Iggles always seem to man up when they play us, regardless of the location (home vs. away), but I believe we have a very good chance to roll on these guys. Their O-line is suspect, McNabb is distracted with trying to prove his critics wrong, the head coach is distracted for unfortunate reasons, and most importantly...Choo Choo will be in 'da house baby!

Right. When I read this kind of stuff I'm all like, "Well, we were supposed to have a shutdown defense to match up against the Patriots." and we all saw how well that went.

Who's to say we can't run all over them?

I agree w/Matty, the pass will have to set up the run, at least for a lot of drives.

Then again, I think I've said that about every game this year!

yeah i agree we might need to hit some decent to big pass plays early to set up the run but this game is for our D to win or lose in my opinion . . . i have alot more faith in a consistent showing from our D

if you run the ball and play joe gibbs football it sets up your D to win or lose games, of course we need 14 - 20 points from our offense but our D can set us up with good field position every now and then too . . . did i mention i think this teams success depends on our defense yet?

I'm with you. This is the time when we must start proving our mettle as a well-rounded offense, and proving that we're not a one-trick pony. Not only does our line need to continue being physical when run-blocking, but they need to bring it together and give Campbell time in the passing game.

I have confidence in JC that if given time back there, he can do enough damage through the air to win this game. It's all on the big boys up front.

I was trying to figure out where to post this but i guess here is as good as any. Everybody knows that the skins have to develop a passing game to be a top team. We haven't done it so far. No news there.

But I'm kinda getting sick every time i hear Gibbs or JC tell us the the team played in 2 deep coverage so we couldn't throw the ball. If that's the case why can other teams throw the ball on 2 deep coverage. Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't alot of the middle of the field be open. How about making some adjustments? Just wanted to rant a little...and yes Philly will be a big test this weekend.

There's alot of time for our O to improve but we've got to start taking some steps in the right direction.

I think Portis could have 100 yards receiving this week. Screens, swing passes, and the H Post (a pattern we haven't seen much of with Al Saunders) could be very effective. The H post is the halfback over the middle usually singled up against an LBer. They ran it against Philly a couple times for good gains in 2005 with Betts covered (poorly) by the now departed J-Trotter. And also against TB (regular season) to Betts for a TD.

As bad as McNabb has been playing he still scares me every time we play him. He could explode anytime lets hope it is not this week. But bottom line for his sake he probably should not be playing with his knee not close to 100%

This is a fantasy blog where even if its a good runner if they are playing a tough run D you sit him for another runner playing against a softer rushing D. If your playing fantasy football and playing all skins because they are your team then your not doing to good. You pick your players based on who they are matched up against not who they are. Except for some guys like Peyton, Brady, Moss.

Don't see why we are screwed. Philly is banged up and Donovan isn't his self this season. Sure Dawkins is back, but I doubt he is near 100%. Stack the line against CP then burn them with Moss or Randle El. Moss needs to catch fire soon or any playoff run will be squelched soon. This game is probably the easiest game left on the schedule so we beter come away with a win.

I think even stacking the line Portis will get over 125 yards. Remember their SS is out and Gibbs seems more commited than ever to pound the ball. As long as the game is close expect more runs than passes. I wouldn't be suprised if JC attempts fewer than 20 passes this week.

I will reind you all that NFC East matcnups are hard fought and never predictable.

We beat Philly the 1st time around. So what, they are going to be ready to shock us this week. Just like they almost shocked us 2 seasons ago heading into the playoffs. Portis has never had a 100 yard game against Philly, so I think he is due. However, if Philly gets off to a fast start like I thing they will, the running game will not exist this week. We will be throwing more than we want to. We will win, but it will not be the running game that brings us victory.

The guy had Adrian Peterson in his "hate" column last week. Just goes to show you that all this sit/start stuff during the week talk is worthless.

Campbell looked fantastic last time we played Philly, and if we get that kid of game out of him, plus another good game out of Portis, and you can say 6-3!

Casey Wagner is hating on Portis too. If you're scratching your head wondering who the hell Casey Wagner is, he is fictional character I made up.

I just thought I should throw this little nugget out there because apparently I don't know who Matthew Berry is nor do I care what he or his ilk think.

I suppose this makes us even. Carry on.
