How will the team react?
Listening to the tragedy of Sean covered by Larry Michaels. He mentions, "How will the team react". As larry points out, it seems impossible to imagine having to play a game this week while coming to grips with the murder of ST. The team is obviously devastated over this.
Will the team rally and re-dedicate themselves in the memory of Sean, or will they not be able to pull it together. I hope they do, what Sean would do, and Kick the living shit out of somebody! |
Re: How will the team react?
I wonder who will even play, especially if there are ceremonies happening this weekend. It's a bit ironic (probably using that word wrong) when you consider they are playing the Bills who were dealing with their own tragedy earlier this year. Though for them their tragedy took a significant turn for the better
Two games in ten games under these circumstances is awfully tough. But at the same time 0-2 under these circumstances really doesn't matter does it? |
Re: How will the team react?
The Bills are gonna get crushed...book it.
|
Re: How will the team react?
Part of me wonders how the hell we can even think about football right now. The other part knows that ST would show up Sunday and lay a beat down out of respect. I think to do anything else would be disrespectful to his memory. We owe this to him. We owe it as fans to show up on Sunday and cheer and cry and the we owe it as a team to honor Sean with effort and pride.
|
Re: How will the team react?
I'm sure the players will try to honor Sean's memory, but this kind of loss can be so fatiguing. There will be some sleepeless nights for men who have lost a friend.
|
Re: How will the team react?
I think they'll go out and want to hit them in the mouth. They should have a lot of intensity.
I just noticed that the Bills are somehow involved (sometimes in a small way) in all the scary/tragic things that have happened this year. They had the Kevin Everett thing happen, then they were playing the Bengals when CJ had to get taken off on a stretcher, and now they're playing the Redskins this week coming off this tragedy. Very weird. |
Re: How will the team react?
This isn't about the team, but if the NFL Network wants to really legitimize itself it should be LIVE right now with coverage of these events, not replaying Total Access.
|
Re: How will the team react?
It reminds me of the article on Springs on redskins.com a few weeks ago. It was about how football is his refuge. THose 3 hours on Sunday will probably be the only time all week that the players will be able to get some frustration and emotion out.

I'm sure they will be live when they can get all of their people in studio, it's probably too early in the morning.. just my best guess. |

It's before 6am in LA. I think NFLN only has a few production people there overnight. Besides, other than the tragic announcement, I don't think there is any other news to report or to go live with. |
Re: How will the team react?
We won't know until they hit the field. I'm sure every player and coach will be dealing with this tragedy in their own way.

I was thinking about going to the game on Sunday before all this happened, but since I've been wishy-washy. I wasn't sure if I could see myself being able to sit in that stadium surrounded by #21 jerseys and cheer for a game. But like you said, that's probably the best way to honor a guy who actually realized just how lucky he was to be able to (as he put it) "play a kid's game for a king's ransom."
Now I sort of feel like I have to go. |
Re: How will the team react?
I don't know how the team will react, but I'm going to be emotional as hell. I'm going to watch this game alone because I know I'll be a wreck and I don't want anyone seeing that. I can't even get any work done today.
|
Re: How will the team react?
This tragedy is going to be very emotionally draining for everyone in the organization. People react to differently to these events so I don't know what to expect.

Instead they just put a crawler at the bottom of the screen.
Granted, they covered it all day yesterday, but I think things are a bit different today. |

Still, you call them, you wake them up. You get their asses over to work. They should have prepared obit pieces on him yesterday. They should have Faulk and Woodson discussing it. Schefter ready to provide whatever info as it comes in. But in the end it doesn't matter |
Re: How will the team react?
I think coach Gibbs said it pretty well yesterday in his presser..."I don't have a clue how to prepare this week, I have never had this happen to me in my career".
I really don't think they know how to react or what is going to happen the rest of the week. This is truely going to be a tough one. The good thing is that it's a HOME game and I am sure the faithful will be ready to support the team. |
Re: How will the team react?
I just got up here in the west and heard that Taylor has passed wow it kicked my butted!!! I have to say it is been a very sad season and now this!!! This will be very hard to over come. As for locking out on the other post I think you are wrong because it's a way for us to talk about this and for some a way to try to come to some sences of why this happen! Just such a wasted and so sad!!!

Re: How will the team react?
The skins need to honor his memory, with an agressive and hardhitting style of play. ST was the heart and soul of the D and arguably the best player on the team. Dominate the rest of the season, even if they dont make the playoffs.. for the MEAST ST!

But in the end it doesn't matter[/QUOTE] NFL Network isn't alone. We're still watching the midnight Sportscenter. Comcast SportsNet is showing a college football replay. I've only scanned the "News" networks, but I've seen nothing. As soon as the media heard this news, they should have started writing career retrospectives, in case Sean didn't make it. Casey Husband had a piece up at 7 am on Redskins.com - that's his job. |
Re: How will the team react?
I wouldn't place high expectations on this upcoming game. I feel lost right now, and I didn't even know Taylor. I can't imagine his teammates being able to focus this week. The managing the aftermath of this tragedy will be the biggest challenge of Gibbs's NFL career.

It's hard to care about football right now. I can't imagine what the team will be going through this week leading up to the game. Sunday is going to be a very emotional day needless to say. |
Re: How will the team react?
This is one of those events that can swing drastically either way; it may unite the team to play hard for ST & give them a sense of purpose, or they could be overwhelmed & not at all ready to focus on their job.
It's not quite analogous, but Va. Tech's team was really slow out of the blocks this year & I think a lot had to do w/the aftermath of the April 16 shootings & all the support they got from other schools. The very nature of football makes it hard to compete w/full intensity after ceremonies in honor of the deceased. When the players know the deceased personally, I can only imagine that it's a huge "distraction" for lack of a better word. The staff & the players are obviously going to have a tough time w/this. While it could spur an emotional burst of energy, I think it's more likely that they'll have a tough time staying in games. Maybe I'm just prepared to write the season off in light of ST's death. I almost feel that out of respect we should all just lower our expectations & not criticize the team for the rest of the year. |
Re: How will the team react?
these guys are pros. sure, they lost a brother, but the game will be played. and every one of these guys have gigantic egos. no one, that's right, no one, wants to go out on Sunday and get embarrassed. tragedy, as awful as it is, occurs everyday to someone. you have to pick up the pieces, as best you can, and move on. its what we do. its part of what makes us great. im not trying to be cold, just realistic. i would be shocked if you don't see superior effort from the skins this weekend

Excellent point...we all gotta put what's really important over football expectations....a Redskin has tragically died, everyone is going to have a hard time dealing with that for months. |
Re: How will the team react?
All I can say is...thank God Joe Gibbs is our coach right now....there is no one....no one better for this kind of situation.
These are sort of situations that Gibbs is needed. His spiritual strengths will be leaned on during this difficult time. He will put this all into perspective....yes, we may lose a bunch of games, but more importantly, lives may be impacted for the better |
Re: How will the team react?
I know you get over something like this but how do you play a game next sunday? I remember when my father died I just shut down for a few weeks. But for guys that play and work together like the Skins how do you get up for a game in less then a week. How do coaches make game plans? It all seems so nothing after somthing like this!

I will not lower my expectations. I will change them. I expect these guys, these friends of Sean's, to honor him by playing the games their lives. I am not talking about winning games here. I am talking about effort and pride. I expect this team to display a sense of pride and emotion that we have never seen before from them. I expect them to lay everything out and show everyone how much they care about this game. If at the end of these upcoming games I can look at them and know that they did everything they could. That they did what Sean would have done then win or lose I will be proud of them. |

That's very easy for you to say. But the players probably don't want to play at all. The guys that were close to him probably can't wait for the season to end so they can heal. I don't know about anyone else but I really don't care about the rest of the season. |

This is going to be hard to get over and we are on the outside looking in. Not the family or players or friends of Sean Taylor. |

I'm agree with you. I believe the team will honor Sean by playing inspired football. I couldn't care less about wins/losses as long as they play from the heart and leave everything on the field, the way Sean did, they will be successful in honoring their teammate. |

I think this may be a little different. Many of the players will miss him certainly during the game. This is not like he is missing because he is hurt or traded or a free agent who has gone to antoher team. He was their leader back there. The guys on D will miss him on the field. He was one of their generals. This will be tough for our team and our fans when we don;t see him out there. HAIL!! ;:( |
Re: How will the team react?
I expect to hear a unifying message of 'let's go do it for Sean' and the rest of the season being driven towards trying to make a positive out of this awful situation.

This comes back to Gibbs and Co bringing the team together as one strong family. We can curl up in a ball, or we can come out and honor him with our finest efforts. It's gonna take a lot of strength and maturity, but I think we all know Sean wants to look down on his teammates and see them knock heads, not pout. I believe Gibbs will help our players mourn him off the field, and honor him on it. |

BB.... guess Im not the only one who hasnt been productive at all today, I keep fighting the water works, sunday let it flow get it out and do it for ST |
Re: How will the team react?
I can't see how they won't put together one of their best performances this season. With so much emotion the energy level will be tough for coaches to control. If I were the coach I would tell my boys "Leave it all on the field, you can't change it, so just get it all out & leave it there".
I'm sure the Bills would prefer not to be the next team on the Skins schedule, who would...? I see the Skins winning this through emotion & relentless effort. I could see the fans rushing the field in celebration, now that's a win I would like to see! |
