Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I really don't get it. I know Bill Belichick and, to some, Tom Brady aren't the most likable guys around, (actually I happen to like Brady but that's neither here nor there) but all they do is compete hard and win games. That's it; they win games. And I don't find them to be smug or ungrateful about it. It's usually the other teams that are talking trash leading up to the games, not the Pats. The media, just to be fair to the Pats, zoom in on every little sideline twitch and post game greeting by Belichick. It's so absurd. If he doesn't smooze with the opposing coach after the game, then he's being an asshole. On the other hand, if he shakes the guy's hand then he's just doing it for the cameras. It's funny, with Brady you have just as many people curious about his post game outfit more than the number of touchdowns he'll throw for during the game. Let's face it, they are in a no win situation.
But the real question is...well, I guess not so much a question as much as commentary, I suppose. How in the hell are they being bad sportsmen and how should they act? To be brutally honest, I think we have this fluffy definition of sportsmanship. I think we want it both ways in our society. We like winners, which is fine, but then we want to feel good about the guys that win. We want them to sign autographs, smile on que, give shout outs to everyone that helped them make it, and shake hands on the way down from the podium. Then on top of that, we tend to unjustly judge their personal lives. Are they good to their wives, good to their kids, and do they do community service work. If the answer is no to any of the three aforementioned, we pile on more as evidence of what douche bags they are. I think as long as one is being professional and playing according to the rules then, hey, it's all good. Trust me, I'm no fan of the Patriots but I am a fan - a huge fan - of the way they're handling business right now. A lot NFL teams and head coaches, active and retired, would do themselves a great service by taking note of how they play on the field and not giving so much attention to what they're doing off it. All week leading up to the Steeler's game all you heard about was this punk from the Steelers that was shit talking about how they were going to win and this and that. If the Patriots are guilty of anything, it's winning. And if we don't like them winning and the way they win games, then let's just say that. Tom Brady had a brilliant quote in response to Anthony Smith's guarantee, "well done is better than well said." |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I think Tom Brady is posessed of a kind of indefinable shittiness that is difficult to put your finger on. I think at some point someone was feeding him biddy.

Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I think it's easy to understand why people hate the Patriots.
For starters they've had a long run of success and people tend to get sick of seeing the same team winning over and over. Society tends to love the underdog but once that dog becomes a dynasty, we can't wait to see them stumble. And the way they are doing it this year by steamrolling teams and running up scores makes them even easier to hate than in previous years. The single most biggest reason though is probably Belichick. Let's face it he's very easy to hate, in fact he doesn't give you much of a reason to like him at all. That's probably the way he wants it. I don't think Brady is hated as much as Belichick, but his cocky, pretty boy attitude definitely can rub people the wrong way. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I think it's the fact that "THEY GOT CAUGHT CHEATING". That definitely couldn't be helping.
|
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
They might be fine people, but we don't see it. Go watch a press conference. They are so smug and their contempt for everyone outside of the locker room is palpable. I also don't like Tony Romo for much of the same reasons I don't like Tom Brady. Go watch a couple of their press conferences, how could you like those guys? I wouldn't want to hang out with them. They're great players, no question. But unless you're a fan of those teams I really don't know how you can like them honestly. Compare that to Jason Campbell, Chris Cooley, Peyton Manning, or some of the other good guys in the league. A lot of folks don't like Manning (I guess because he has so many commercials) but the that is a guy who just works his butt off plus he has a great personality (IMHO). Maybe it's just because Brady has no personality to speak of (go watch that SNL he hosted, it was brutal). Also look at how the Colts handled being up 44-7 on the Ravens and think about what the Pats would have done.
As with most things I think Gregg Easterbrook nailed it in a column a few months ago and said it more eloquently than I could. ESPN Page 2 - TMQ: Good vs. Evil |

Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
Well lets face it, being a little bit humble goes a long way. Yes the coach and the qb are cocky and rude assfaces, but its also the way they have played ball this season, as Matty pointed out. The fact of the matter is the majority likes the 'good guy'. For instance someone who knows they have a great team, but is also greatfull that things are going well. When I think of someone with respect to winning games and superbowls, I like the approach Tony Dungy, Dick Vermeil, and ofcourse Joe Gibbs and countless other winning coaches take during their success, not these current jerkoffs.

Well, unfortunately human beings make sense of their world through analogy. I don't see the problem here. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I agree there is nothing wrong with the way they are winning.
I just am emoptionally retared and cant get over a 55ish to 7 asswhipping we took. I dont like the way they ran the score up and quotes like "what did you want us to do - kick a filed goal?" but that doesnt make them bad sports or whatever in general. :) :) I am being serouis. If the skins were having a run like that I would have loved the way they are handleing themselves. Belichick is a rock and gets all the BS focused on him and not his team. Brady is playing lights out and has liquid oxygen in his veins (way past ice). Whats not to like other than "Waaaaaa! Mommmy, Tommy hit me" which is where I am emotionally and have been sacraficing chickens, goats and even a few sheep to the football gods every sunday to ensure the Pats lose; alas, I think they are going to run the table.(/ponders....mebbie if can find a cow ...or a horse....) lololol :) Bottom line is sometimes you are the windshield and some times you are the bug....... |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
52-7. Reason enough for me.
|
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
Man this is fun I never seen so many people worked up over a team playing like no other team. I'm cheering for the Pats because I think its funny how it ticks everyone of. Pats 16 and 0 so you Dolphins fans better stick those corks back in the bottle.
I think it's the fact that "THEY GOT CAUGHT CHEATING". That definitely couldn't be helping.
Once a team is caught cheating, that's it for me. I could care less if "there's some form of cheating going around on every team". Bottom line: you cheat, you suck. You do not deserve to field a team until all people involved are removed indefinitely from the team. Same goes for the Redskins, btw. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I like the Patriots. They are a TEAM. They play football the way it should be played. Starters playing special teams, defensive players getting in on offense and not just to block. Have you a heard a word out of Randy Moss since he has gone to New England? No, because it wouldn't be tolerated on that TEAM. The Jets and Fish have no chance to beat the Pats. The Giants will rest most of their starters so any chance that they will pull an upset is out of the question.
|
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I used to really, really respect the Pats. They are a well coached and run franchise. They are extremely successful on the field. But, for the very same reasons why I respect people such as Art Monk and Joe Gibbs, I despise guys like Belichick. Some people don't really care about character, but I do (that's not directed at you 12th man).

I didn't take it personally, and I totally understand the statement on the value of character. But my thing is, I'm not too sure the Patriots are guilty of anything that hasn't been a part of the NFL culture for a long, long time. As far as the character of the Pats? I'll say this - while they haven't done much to endear football fans to them, I can't really say they don't have character either. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I think it all stems from Belichick. Belichick has done a pretty good job of establishing himself as an asshole in the public's eye. Short tempered with the media, shoving cameramen, a sordid personal life, and add to that the latest cheating scandal and you have a guy that a lot of people find it really hard to root for.
I can't stand Tom Brady, but like someone else here said, that's more for an indefinable quality of "douchebagedness." Honestly I've never really heard him say anything too crazy, he just strikes me as an arrogant pretty boy. Some people like that, some people don't, I just happen to not like it. I'd say Belichick's character is seriously in question, whereas Brady is just kind of a douche. Like Sheriff said, some people care about character, some don't. Quite often football is more than "just a game." If it were just a casual game, then yeah, I can see not caring as much. Football has always (to me, at least) been about more than that. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
The Patriots play great football. There is no question about that. Does that mean we should like them? No. You want to know why people hate them, but have you ever thought about why we should like them? The success of a team is no reason to like them, and I know you aren't saying that. I just thought I'd talk about the flip side of the coin.
So, let's think of the reasons to like the Patriots ... ... ... ... sorry, I can't think of any. As for Belichick: there are several reasons to dislike him. 1.) He doesn't present himself well. He looks like a slob on the sidelines. You might say, "big deal, it's football." I would say, do you remember when coaches wore suits on the sidelines? What has happened to looking professional? 2.) The only emotion he shows is anger or discomfort. He very rarely shows any happiness. I don't know about you, but I generally don't like people who are always angry, or just never happy. 3.) He was caught cheating. He has a blatant disregard for the rules, and that makes him seem arrogant (along with other things). 4.) He humiliates his opponents -- just another example of his arrogance. A humble person does not think he or she is better, or more important, than others. Bill Belichick is not humble. |

And I'm willing to say I don't like the Patriot's winning and the way they win. I'm fine with that. I have a problem when classless people who lack character seem to continually succeed. Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I rooted for them over the Rams in 2002. Was sick of that cocky Martz. At the SB, the Pats were one of the first to ask to be introduced "as a team" unlike other teams who have players announced individually who then dance out onto the field (like Ray Lewis). Also loved the way they drafted and acquired smart ball players who could play both offense and defense (Troy Brown, Vrabel, etc.). My favorite Pats play came against Denver a couple of years ago when Ben Watson chased down Champ Bailey's 100 yd INT return and foiled a TD.
Now, its time for another team to win. I'd like to see them go 16-0, but lose in the playoffs to another gritty team. It could happen. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I dislike Brady immensely as I said before but he has at least earned the right to be a douchebag if such a thing is possible. Belichick, on the other hand, has a lifetime record of 41 -55 as a HC of teams on which Tom Brady is not the starting QB.

Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I don't have a problem with the Pats, they're just a good team. If people wanna see a new team win, they better pray their team gets better or hope Tom Brady's head falls off. Otherwise get used to the Patriots steamrolling everyone for another year or two. The only other teams I think could compare to the Pats are the Steelers and the Colts.
The one thing I don't like about them is that to me, they are the Yankees of football (Sorry Yanks fans). A bunch of hype and then when they get their asses kicked, they'll boohoo about it. (Can you tell I don't like the Yankees? :)) |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
Teams reflect the personality of the coach. The patriots seem smug because they get it from their coach. Colts are classy due to dungy, same with the Skins. Belichek has always seemed to have the personality of chalk board, and an attitude that he is better than anything or anyone around him. The guys on that team follow him and would run through a brick wall for that dude, as would most of our guys. I personally dont like the pats because I am a little po'd at the lack of class in running up scores and the snide comments made to opposing players, however, I do not think that makes Brady a bad guy. He is confident, he is GREAT, probably one of the greatest of all time, I think he just exudes that confidence in life also. The dude is dating the hottest women on the planet, making tons of millions, winning superbowls, the best QB in the league, I am sure if that was anyone of us, we would be perceived the same way.

People are just bitter cause the guy is great looking, he has a super model for a g/f and above all he's great at what he does. I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about the guy. His teammates really seem to like him too. If he was a Redskin we'd all love the guy. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
i used to like them until they beat San Diego last year and acted like assholes to a team with a lot of class
They wouldn't have acted like assholes if Merriman wouldn't act like an asshole in the first place by doing that stupid little dance everytime he gets a sack. Do you see any of the pats players doing that crap? Nope. SD looks like the assholes for bitching and showboating after they got beat. |
Let me ask you this tough question. We all love Gibbs. But would you rather have a high character guy who isn't a good coach and has a losing record? Or would you rather have a guy who is terrible with the media, has a terrible personality, but wins? I care about character. But some of the things Bill B. has been accused of is not a big deal to me. |
Re: Why All The Hate Toward The Patriots?
I don't get where people think Brady is good looking. The dude has a freakishly massive cranium. You could post a billboard on that forehead.
