Let's Talk Vikings
Now that we've gotten pass da Bears and the Giants, let's discuss the Vikings.
I'll be honest, outside of Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor I really don't know much about this team. Obviously, the offensive line is one of the best in the league and from what I hear they have the number one run defense too. But what else makes them scary? Are they good in the dome this year? I don't think Tavaris Jackson has given anyone fits this year, has he? So my question is this, what is about this team that presents problems for the Redskins? Oh, I guess we'll be pulling for the Bears tonight. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Without a doubt, the Vikings are great at using the run to set up the pass. My stepdad is a huge Vikings fan so I check them out often to give him shit if they suck.
Pretty much Tavaris Jackson is crap when the running game isn't going. If it is, he can run that play action ALL day to his shit receiving corps. We should be able to shut down their WRs without huge problems. We ALSO should be able to pass on them a bit. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
I guess the thing the scares me the most about them is that fact that they are hot right now. Even when team sucks statiscally, if they're on a roll it doesn't matter much.

Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Vikings have the #1 Rushing Defense... I'd be most concerned with this..
EDIT: They also have the #32 Pass Defense :laughing- |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
We should load the box and slow down the rushing attack and make them beat us throwing the ball. I do think we can run the football on them if we stick with it but their front 7 is very good against the run.
I would think our gameplan will be more short to intermediate passes to open the game and soften up their 7-8 in the box. Should be a good game. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
You know, I gave this a little thought over the weekend. The whole number one in this category and number one in that category. Sometimes, often times, that can be a function of how the game flows and not always reflective of how dominant you are. Also, if they are number one in rush defense but near the bottom in pass defense that tells me something too.
I tend to be more impressed with teams that are like 3rd or 4th in both categories. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
What it tells me is that they are so dominant at stopping the run that teams just don't try it anymore and resort to the air. That's when teams throw the ball 40-50 times a game. While it might say they suck against the pass, that's not necessarily true. Also look at the division they play in. They've played Detroit AND Green Bay twice, both teams who heave the ball at the drop of a hat.

Re: Let's Talk Vikings
It just seems damn near impossible to bottle both backs up though.

( might have been those burgandy socks + pants combo  |

He did seem quicker or something. Maybe it was just us....I did notice he honored Sean Taylor after he scored. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
We should be able to exploit their secondary. I think we'll be able to beat them with screens and draws -- something Saunders does pretty well.
On defense, as was stated earlier, we should stack the box and see if they can beat us in the air. If we do this, I bet we get at least 1 pick. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
If they get throught the linebackers, pray Laron comes to the rescue, because if he doesnt, we are in trouble.

Re: Let's Talk Vikings
I think you pretty much summed it up, TMC. They're unbelievable in the trenches. The offensive line features beast Hutchinson, center Matt Birk (been a pro bowler), Bryant McKinnie at T (been a pro bowler) and then Artis Hicks who was a solid G for Philly for a number of years. Peterson has averaged 6.1 a carry, and Chester Taylor who is an average runner has averaged 5.3. Hell, Mewelde Moore is averaging 5.3.
The DTs have to be the best tandem in the game right now. Pat Williams and Kevin Williams. They're immovable objects. They don't have much in the way of pass rush, that's why I think their pass defense is suspect. They have some quality in the secondary with Antoine Winfield and Darren Sharper back there. But their most productive sack guy is DE Ray Edwards (who?) and he only has 5. Running up the middle isn't going to work for us in this one. We've got to attack through the air. We should be able to protect Collins well enough for him to find plenty of targets. On defense, the WRs don't scare anybody, I think we match up well. They do have a burner in Williamson, but he's inconsistent. You just keep Landry back 20-25 yards like we've been doing, guard against the deep ball, and bring Doughty up in the box. I think our corners have been playing well enough to negate their WRs, so we should be able to move Doughty around. We're going to need him, because our defensive front is going to get moved. Hutchinson and McKinnie especially will get major push on us. Hopefully the 8th man up can slow them down enough. Then we just have to hope Peterson doesn't make all 8 miss. Because we all know he can. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
As they say, if you can't stop the run you're toast! Stop their running game and you have a good chance of winning. Seriously, these guys are averaging 172.2 yards per game (22.6 yards more than the next team). Our run D needs to show up and show up big.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
i was worried before this game but watching the first half against da bears makes me scared to run the ball on these guys. looks like they can run on 3rd and 6 and still pick it up. should be a good game, season on the line type shit.
go skins!!!! |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Viks are looking very beatable.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
The thing that scares me is that now without McIntosh who's very fast (was)Peterson who hits that hole like a Ferrari and an old man like Godfrey is gonna have a hard time keeping up with him.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
They are 7th in scoring defense. To me, that's the number that matters. Points win and lose ball games. Not total yards. That's why I hate that yardage determines "total" defense and offense.
Just when I was about to say something negative about their passing game they just connected on a 71 yard pass. Shit. Oh they missed the extra point! HA! On a side note, their best corner Antoine Winfield left the game with a shoulder injury and will not return. I hope the guy is okay but I wouldn't mind it one bit if he had to sit out next week. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Kyle Orton blows. If NO wins against the Eagles we are screwed because they are going to kill the Bears. I just pray that the Giants lose in Buffalo.

Re: Let's Talk Vikings
why isnt griese playing? hes way better than orton
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
One thing to note is T.Jackson is a horrendous QB. he has made some terrible decisions this game, and the Viks are just lucky the Bears suck.
If we get good pressure on the QB and inhibit the run we should have a good chance. |
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
And as soon as I said that Jackson looks hurt lol.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Damn. I actually thought that Chicago may pull this one off. Peterson is sick.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Sidney Rice got carted off and Antoine Winfield was hurt earlier. I'm not by any means cheering injury, but it would be big for us if both of those guys couldn't go this Sunday.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
The Bears are just awful. Awful. Vikings can definitely be beat next week. Put them away early by taking advantage of inevitable turnovers. Something the Bears could not do tonight.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
Vikes win 20-13. This is a good matchup, but very winnable. Tarvis throws a lot of INTS, so our secondary better at least come up with two themsleves. Not sure how we are going to handle Peterson and Taylor though, especially with us losing Rocky. If Collins has a nice game throwing we should be in great shape. I expect CP to get around 70-80 yards and maybe one TD. It boils down to what you guys stated earlier, how our LB's handle their running game. Turnovers by Jackson can give us this game though if we can turn them into points. Kid has a cannon arm, but is too inconsistent and makes bad throws.
|
Re: Let's Talk Vikings
We have to find a way to shut down Peterson and Taylor. It was bad enough that we couldn't slow down Jacobs last night, he basically slowed down himself.
|

Yeah to be honest I bet we do better against Peterson than with the tank Taylor. This will be a definite prime time game!!!!!! |

That would be debatable. Chicago has to dump just about their entire QB corp, and most of their WR corp as well. What a waste of a great D!!!! |

It was great mid 2nd quarter when the Bears had another 3 and out, and Tirico blurted "this offense is just awful." LOL! Credit to him for such an off the cuff candid comment (alliteration not intended). Jaworski replied "tell me how you really feel Mike." It was a funny exchange. |
