Looking to buy an XBox 360

Guys I am looking to buy a 360, I don't need like the top tier one or whatever. Some of you guys know a lot more about systems and electronics pricing in general so I had a couple questions.

First and foremost, what is price currently and are there going to be any cuts soon? With that are there any good bundles out there? I am most definately looking for an extra controller and games(halo, etc).

Also should I buy a warranty?

Basically I need to know the basic 360isms.

I have always been a Sony person too starting with PS, so this is a big switch for me and I don't know much.

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

A lot of good info here:

Xbox 360 Console Resource Center : Game System, Specs, Accessories, Price, Games List on GameSpot

I made the switch from Sony to the Xbox and I don't regret it one bit. If you like online gaming the 360 is the best way to go right now, Xbox Live is so well done it's not even funny.

The premium console is probably your best bet and it sells for $349 and includes a 20 GB hard drive, wireless controller, and headset.

There's a table on this page that shows the difference between all the different versions.

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

Thanks. So I guess I will be looking at the 20G. I don't think I would ever need 120. I mean are mod chips cheap, because I heard you can just save games onto the harddrive.

I wonder how much space a game would take up.

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the help. Also I know this must be asked alot but is it really worth paying for XBox Live? PS3's service is for free. That along with my loyalty for the past 6-7 year to Sony are the only things holding me back.

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

Also I was looking into

because I want halo, and beside the ugly color it's pretty much a pro right>?

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

yeah the xbox live is worth paying for. the ps3 home demo looked pretty cool for online chatting, which Im not really into... but nonetheless HOME looked pretty cool.

xbox live premium subscription is the way you play online and yes its worth every penny. dont even get the system if you're not going to plan on playing online, because most games are just okay in single player modes...

the live competition online for madden or ncaa is addictive as hell, and cod4... what an amazing online game...

btw... I see there are new maps on cod4 that I haven't played... I just saw a new one when I got home from work.... also some more team games available to play. I guess they plan on updating things to keep it fresh.

It's definitely worth it. No question. You won't regret it.

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

If you think you want to use this as an HD-DVD player (with the optional HD-DVD drive) in the future, I suggest getting the Pro (or Elite?) with the HDMI output. The HD-DVD drive works fine right now to play movies, but at some point the stupidios are going to start enabling HDCP on movies, which will render a 360 with just component outputs useless for watching HD-DVD. Just a safeguard for the future.

I am looking at the chart here comparing Pro and Elite adn I don't see the difference there. Only thing is I would have to buy the hdmi cable later, which I wouldnt mind.

Am I correct or is there a hardware difference in terms of DVD stuff?

There used to be (my Pro has only component) - but it looks like HDMI is standard on all versions now. Nevermind!

If you want to game online, no console can compare to your computer.

Same holds for cost. Gaming consoles are a minimum of 50% cheaper than the PC rig you would need to play the leading games. Unless, of course, you are talking about WoW...

Daseal 12-19-2007 12:10 PM

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

Yeah, you can spend more on a nice gaming rig, but if you turn down graphics, effects, etc you can do more with a less powerful machine. That said, you're going to have a computer anyways, why not spend a bit more on it and save money.

Yeah, I play WoW. But there are thousands of other games far more complex than something a console can takeover. I'm just glad Bungie is out of their MS contract and can go back to making PC games (Marathon, Myth I, Myth II [myth series is easily the best game Ive ever played]) Rumor has it they have phoenix coming out at some point.)

The only games that I've found better on a console are sports games.

Re: Looking to buy an XBox 360

I don't do any gaming on my PC, but I thought to run COD4, Bioshock, etc., you had to have a $200+ graphics card. That right there is 50-75% of the entire cost of a console. If you don't need something like that, then I can see your point.

The biggest issue for me is that I want to be in my living room on the 1080p when I'm playing a game. I have 2 PCs and 3 laptops, but I prefer the console for games. I guess a part of it boils down to personal choice.

Ugh. This is the first I'm hearing of this. I just received my HDDVD player for my legacy 360 (no HDMI) two days ago. Not cool.

I guess I'll have to do something when HDCP HDDVDs start hitting the shelves.

Luckily, HDCP is in the media. That is, each disc either has it or doesn't - they can't "add it in" later. I haven't heard of any stupidios incorporating it for HD-DVD yet.

Also, to be clear - your HDCP movies will play without HDCP, just not at HD resolutions. I think they get scaled down to 480p, but I'm not positive on that.

Yeah the graphic requirements for COD4, Bioshock, Gears of War, etc., are pretty high from what I understand, if you want to get the full potential out of the game.

It's definitely an issue of personal choice. For me I just like the ease of buying a console and not having to worry if a game will come out tomorrow that my computer can't handle.

LOL that's a sweet setup

Love the knobs on that 12 inch monitor.

Is that a recent pic of Daseal? I didn't know he smoked. ;)
