Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

Are you sold on Reed Doughty I know he has had much PT other than special teams. I know that his lack of PT was b/c ST was playing. I was in a debate earlier about this & I was wondering what your thoughts were?

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

Since the team learned ST would not be coming back, Landry was moved to FS and Doughty has been playing the position that suits his style best; SS. He's not a great cover guy, but he's got a decent closing burst, is a solid tackler, and has a panache for the big hit.

He hasn't played much, but if he continues to play the way he has since taking over at SS, I won't have a feeling of immediate urgency to draft a safety. So far, he has been relatively solid.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

I think he can be a dependable starter in the NFL. Good tackler, good in run support, instinctive, takes good angles. Certainly you'd love to have more speed back there to act as a ballhawker and game changer, but I think we could do worse. He's not the kind of guy that's going to change a game for you, but I think he's also a guy you can depend on and won't make mistakes to kill you. He's starting to remind me an awful lot of Ryan Clark. Prioleau's presence as insurance makes me feel even less anxious about that position.

It's still only his second year, so he has plenty of time to get better.

He's the second coming of Mark Murphy. Slow, but a pretty solid player.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

I just hope he learns to turn his head in coverage. There's no doubt, however, that he's a better cover guy then Adam Arche....Wait, maybe I shouldn't mention the name. That would be piling on a guy who gave his us his all and was a true Redskin.

he is quality enough to not panic to get a new safety. maybe draft one later in the draft but im comfortable with doughty at strong safety.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

he's competent, and a good tackler (see his college stats), but he's slow and a very low end starter. he's fine, but ideally, you'd like an upgrade in that spot.

There really isnt much safety depth in the draft this year anyways I would much rather draft or sign a corner first then if we see a 2nd or 3rd round safety that we like then pick him up.

Ugh. Here we go again with the CB business.

Schneed10, I'm with you on this one. I believe we really don't need to sign a high priced free agent or spend a high draft pick on a CB. But I do think we should either sign a decent mid level CB or draft one in the lower rounds.

As for Doughty, I think he's ok. I definitely think we could get an upgrade in the draft or FA. Bob Sanders would look good in burgundy and gold. He's a FA this year.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

He is most certainly better than Archuleta. I don't know if he is a full starter just yet but if he works really hard at it I don't see why he couldn't be. I have seen flashes of brilliance in him. Against the Giants he played pretty damn well...even the TD that was caught against him wasn't entirely hist fault...he was caught in no man's land because Springs/Smoot let their man get behind them and he tried to help out.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

Landry compliments him best..since LL can cover so much of the field in pass coverage Reed at the line of scrimmage works..The way injuries have plagued us though I would not take offense to us drafting a saftey in the first 2 rounds

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

I think that time will tell. He needs to have an offseason where he can play with the first team and grow accustomed to the surrounding player on D. We defenitly need to get somebody else for depth purposes atleast. I don`t like the idea of bringing in a high priced FA like Bob Sanders, I want somebody young and talented, preferably from the draft.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

This is the point in the conversation where someone usually suggests converting Shawn Springs to Safety.

I think Doughty is an interim starter but a fairly adequate one. Speed is such a premiuim for defense these days that any time you hear someone described as being "not that fast" or even worse "slow", they usually don't hang around for all that long. The reason Mark Murphy survived in the league as long as he did was because of his brain. He was The Redskins' NFLPA rep and got a law degree from some Ivy League school after playing. He just got hired to run the Packers, too. The point is that if your body is slower, your brain needs to be faster. Anticipation can get you that extra split second.

i didnt mean sign a high priced free agent I meant for depth like a solid 3 guy or draft a guy cause our secondary always seems to get hurt.

I would crap my pants of we could land Bob Sanders. Bob might be the best safety now since ST passed.

The only thing that would worry me about Sanders is his proneness to injury. Hasn't he missed some significant time the past two seasons?

Shoot, Ed Reed is one of the best players, defensively or offensively, in the NFL.

Doughty looked good today. Seems like he's getting more comfortable.

Bob Sanders was wisely signed to a huge extension by Indy.

Reed is getting better but got burned a couple times again
He will be starting long term

We most definitely have our starting safety tandem now. Reed is good to go.

I'm not buying, but I'm not selling either. He's not making big plays, but he's not getting torched. I don't know if GW has adjusted the scheme to ensure he's not asking to much of Doughty, or if Doughty has been doing a good job. He certainly appears to be a keeper though.

What I'm betting on is that he'll improve as he get's more comfortable starting. I think for someone to come and dislodge him from the starting spot, we're talking about a FA signing from some other team.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

Moving Doughty from FS to SS is the best move ever. He is a completely different player, no longer the accident prone, timid player that he became after getting continuely beat at FS. He is thriving at the more physical and less mentally demanding SS position.
I have to admit I was very hard on Doughty. But he did look like crap until he came in at SS and they moved LaRon Landry to his regular college FS position.
I just hope teams do not start to pick on him like they did on Archuleta.

Depending on how Doughty does for the rest of this year and depending on who is the best player available at the time we draft, but I would be fine with sticking with Doughty at SS.
I still say we draft the best available D or O lineman available regardless of position.

legit. he's been learning quickly, and playing well. solid tackler and decent in coverage. He clearly needs to improve, but the foundation is strong

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

I believe Doughty is adequate, especially if we can add another pass rusher to the D-line for next season. There are greater needs on this team than finding a replacement for Doughty. CB will probably also be a priority with Carlos Rogers coming off an ACL.

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

doughty is good enough as a starter, he is young, a good reliable tackler, decent in coverage, and most importantly in my opinion has a good understanding with laron landry. he spoke on redskins post game live about how well he and landry understand each other in such a short period of time

Re: Is Doughty A Fill In 4 Now? or A Legit Starter?

I may have missed a post in this thread, but if nobody else has mentioned it, Reed has something that guys like Arch never had: he's got heart.

This guy is playing inspired football with a purpose, he's not some overpaid clown who's just gotten a huge check (Brandon Lloyd anybody?), or some hotshot like Pacman Jones getting busted for DWI's and nightclub shootings. I dare say we'll never see his name for the WRONG reasons, which seems like a prerequisite these days for a lot of players who are physically more gifted athletes.

IMO, guys like Reed Doughty are classic staples of a Joe Gibbs team. I remember when I heard his story in the preseason I was thinking that he's just the kind of guy that would have been a workman-like player on an 80's - 90's Joe Gibbs team.

kind of like Mark Murphy? i hear what your saying. Doughty is giving the skins something they didn't think he had. very good tackler, and when used right, can be very effective. another good job by coach Williams for getting guys in the right position to succeed
