A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

OK - let's say that the Redskins beat the Cowboys next week with Dallas having nothing to play for and the Redskins having to win to get in. Lets say Collins continues to look sharp in the win against Dallas.

I heard that on the game Jason Campbell is stretching again and he may be able to return in a couple of weeks.

My question is do you put Campbell back in if he is healthy or ride this thing with Collins until the season ends?

This thread is not about the future of Jason Campbell - he is the unquestioned long term starter at qb for us - I am just asking about the postseason for this year only.

Thoughts?

I would say stick to what is working right now and change nothing. Hopefully the same results will occur again.

Anyone tasted those fred smoot smack energy bars yet?

No question, it's Collins' ride now.

collins no doubt. why put in a qb coming off an injury who hasnt played in a month by playoff time, who hadnt won a game in so long etc...

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

UNQUESTIONABLY u play collins if we make it that far. He is the one who got the team going and will have been playing consistently if we make it that far. Campbell wouldn't be 100% and is still a young QB who is learning the offense (as was evidenced by his play before the injury). It's a no brainer Collins will be your man in that scenario. Campbell is still the QB of the future and needs a few more months of development (and recovery, mentally and physically).

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

You have to stick with Collins when you are winning and everything is running smoothly. My question is why was he not the starter last year instead of Brunell. Could we have made the playoffs last year. Saunders has said repeatedly if you want to win now Collins is your guy. I guess I'm just bias because I like Collins very much in this system. I knew that he would do this for us even though he was a backup for most of his career. You have to understand that coaches like Saunders and Martz can work with any qb who has a high football IQ. Campbell will get his shot but not right now. Trust Saunders just like we trust Williams and everything will be okay.

I'm not so sure. I think when Campbell is healthy, it's his show. He is our starting QB. It will be interesting, and I'm not advocating one way or the other, but I think Gibbs will put him back in the lineup. If he struggles, though... that may be a different story.

I don't think so. Gibbs will stick with what's working plus Campbell's knee is still tender and doesn't want to risk further injury. Now if Collins screws up he has to give Campbell a chance.

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

I really don't think you can ruin a good thing. Outside of the miserable weather in NY, he's been lights out and has hit on 75% in two of 3 games now. You just can't take him out now.

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

Collins. Campbell has a bright future ahead of him, why rush him back now and risk more damage to his knee when Collins has shown he can lead this team?

MTK 12-24-2007 11:10 AM

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

And knowing Gibbs' past history with handling QBs at this time of year, he will stick with the hot hand.

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

In three weeks playing now Collins has won offensive player of the week and horse trailer player of the game. Remember Collins isn't a quarterback that played poorly and got benched at some point in his career, he's a player that never got his chance to start...until now.

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

I've been mulling this over in my mind and it's a tough decision. Gman and I were talking about this and I agree with his take, I kinda hope Campbell isn't quite ready and spends the time healing and memorizing the playbook. The rest of the season is Collins' but next season is all Campbell again.

So I'm think ahead, It looks like everyone in the NFC has kind of locked up their playoff position except the Skins and/or the 7th seed (ever how you want to look at it) If the Skins win, who do they play first? Is it the Seahawks? It looks like the Giants are going to Tampa?

Question?
I thought when Collins came over, he had a 2 year deal....meaning he is a free agent at the end of the year...is that right?

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

In just about all facts of a QB's game, Collins has outplayed Campbell. Hardly surprising given the amount of his professional football experience and consistency being in the same offense for so long. Stay with Collins until Week 1 in 2008. Campbell will have plenty of film to watch during the offseason and the opportunity to understand better how Saunders offense works.

Collins has done a great job of not turning the ball over. I dont think anybody mentions that. In 3 games he has 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

Agreed. There's no point in pulling TC if we make it to the playoffs. Just being out a 3-4 weeks with a dislocated knee and then trying to come back only spells disaster in my mind. It seems like an awfully short time to try to let the knee heal and then rehab it. TC finishes out the year and JC takes over next season.

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

Personally, I think if we don't have the confidence to put our healthy starting qb in in the playoffs we need to look elsewhere for a qb. I think it would break his confidence.

If they felt that way I think they would've put him on IR.

Collins has played great so far, but if you bench a healthy campbell for him now, why would you put campbell back in the starting position next year? I don't get that at all.

6 teams make the playoffs, Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye and don't play in the Wildcard games. Teams 3, 4, 5, and 6 play each other. 3 plays at home against 6 and 4 plays at home against 5. Washington would be 6 and play 3 who is Seattle. Tampa (seed 4) get the Giants (seed 5) in Tampa.

There I got it. WE HAVE TO BEAT THE 'BOYS!!!

Thanks. I don't know what I'm thinking. Seattle if we beat Dallas would be sweet revenge. We owe those guys big time, it won't be easy they have some great defensive players, Tatupu, Kearney, Peterson, Trufant.

so... sellers should just stay on the sidelines, too? And hey, why don't we cut rocky, jansen, rogers, too. we're winning without them.

wtf??? am I really the only one who does't see this as an issue. Collin's pass protection played a huge role in his success. I'm watching the game right now and there are several instances where he has over 3 seconds with an 8 man rush to throw the ball... that's freaking amazing... and the cooley touchdown he held it for around 5 seconds...

History Question guys...did Gibbs Bench Doug Williams!?!?

No...

So would he bench TC if we got in

I think the answer is hell no

Stick with Collins for the remainder of the season and hopefully postseason! If the Redskins defeat the Cowboys, we go on to play the Seahawks. I wanted to play the Bucs because you know what the Seahawks did to us last time we were in the playoffs.

Don't over think it.

Collins is the hot hand and is playing great. Why go back to an inexperienced Campbell who undoubtedly would have some rust after sitting out a few weeks??

I just don't see the benefit in messing with a good thing.

Campbell is still our guy for the future, but Collins' time is right now.

Re: A Playoff question: Campbell or Collins?

I disagree. I think you put Campbell back in the game. If he was some clownass who was going to be completely unprepared and have the "deer in the headlights" look ala Grossman, then yeah, stick with TC. But he is not that kind of player. He prepares his ass off and while he has definitely been guilty of pressing too hard at times, he's the best qb on this team. I want to see the game called the same way with him under center as TC before I make the judgement on who's more effective right now. I think a better discussion would be, "Will Al call the same game w/ JC as he has been with TC?"
If not, why not? He needs to take the training wheels off.

Putting JC in a playoff game on the road after missing over a month would be crazy . JC has his entire career ahead of him , why take a chance on him hurting the knee and risk surgery ? He obviously won't since JC is still learning the offense.

It's tough to compare Collins and Campbell. Collins has been fully immersed in this offense for 7 years now. Campbell is still green in terms of being a NFL QB and is still learning this system.

Saunders is obviously going to have more trust in Collins at this point. He shouldn't have to apologize for that.
