Was Campbell really ready?
Okay everybody wants to know the difference between the first few weeks of the season and now. Yes we our red hot but there is a reason. It could be because we're healthy now..heck our offensive line looked like an episode of survivor and the recievers was so banged up we went as far as signing Keenan"wheres my cane"Mccardell and Reche"butterfingers"Caldwell.(which both have been playing good ball as of late). But the reason why is because of leadership.Jason Campbell is a good YOUNG quarterback. After looking at what Todd Collins has done the last 2 1/2 games it goes to show experience and leadership can and will win out.Campbell is a great player dont get me wrong and he will be the star of the franchise at one point but maybe we rushed off to start him because of the disappointing Mark Brunell.Does jason give us a better chance to win then Mark yes.But its clear that Jason wasnt ready to make the full transition since he did cost us a couple of games with untimely turnovers or lack to control a game i.e. the bucs, cowboys, giants, philly and the packers. Seriously each of those games we lost by less then a touchdown.Look as a powerhouse team who each year is a legitimate contender to win it all with the personal and payroll we have we dont have the luxury to burn a season to let a new qb get his sea legs.We expect to win and win now.Collins play as of late showed the cracks we had in offense and that it was a fixable situation.I'm not hopping on the Collins bandwagon and deserting Campbell cause that will be our guy of the future. Also we our healthier now and have a reason to play with the untimely death of saen "Meast" Taylor but heres a couple of points why Collins is the better man.
1)Collins has always been Al Saunders guy.Nobody understands Saunders playbook better because Collins played(not really) for a Kansas City team that Saunders coached so many years.Saunders wanted to start Collins since 05 but was overruled by Gibbs in favor of Brunell. 2)Collins hasnt really played since the late 90's.his only job was to learn the playbook.Image studying for your final exam for ten years....how good would you do? 3)Time without playing helped him also.He never played cause Trent Green never got hurt in kansas city.So know you have a 30 something year old man with the body and health of a 21 year old rookie.Check out his scrambling skills vs minnesota. So could we have won the last 3 games with Campbell maybe. But with the season we've had we needed a strong shoulder to lean on.So the wisdom and strength of Gibbs,Fletcher and Collins is the reason why we could very well go deep in the playoffs |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
I fully expect Campbell to look at the situation and say to himself what can I learn from Todd Collins? It's very important to see the ways Collins is maximizing his strengths in the Saunders system and now that Campbell has a good amount of experience to look back upon and break down going forward he can really continue to grow even if he is just watching for the rest of the year.
And yes Campbell was as ready as he needed to be. They had to streamline the playbook, but he is a young qb and you would never have the luxury of giving him three or four years to completely learn that crazy playbook while sitting on the bench. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
yeah i understand that.First im not apart of the lets hop on the Collins and desert Campbell bandwagon. But if Collins was the one to satrt ahead of Brunell and had more success would Campbell even be playing at this point.Nobody knows a Qb better then his O.C. and it was clear Saunders pick from the beginnig was Collins. Now if Collins takes the team deep into the playoffs if not the super bowl(i might be reaching here)Then what should happen next season?Cuase if they start Campbell next year after a good playoff run this year after a couple of bad games or starts he could lose the confidence of his team..i.e. rex grossman
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
i really like Campbell as the starter. with that being said, maybe sometimes he is alittle too quick to take the check down. Collins seems more at ease looking down field. and taking some chances
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Look at how the 1972 Dolphins (17-0) handled it.
No one expected what the young team accomplished in 1972. A promising campaign seemingly was lost when starting quarterback Bob Griese went down with a broken leg during just the fifth game of the season. However, the Dolphins rallied behind journeyman Earl Morrall and posted an unprecedented 17-0 record, culminated by a 14-7 victory, Griese's first full game back, over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
yeah he is quick to go for the check down. That makes us predictable and easy to stack the box up..
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
I think JC will always have a little Favre in him and that's good and bad. He will always throw picks but hopefully with some more coaching they won't be in the 4th quarter. And I think the check downs are the way that coaches are trying to tame the "riverboat gambler" in him. People complain about the coaches not "letting the handcuffs" off JC, but maybe that is exactly what he needs. He will be in Pro Bowls within the next 3 years, but Collins is the answer for the playoffs.
BTW, I hope Collins comes back next year but not Brunell. Maybe Joey Harrington as a #3? Or Bramlet? |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
To be completely honest I can't point out a single week were the o-line was blocking for Campbell like they are for Collins. Don't quote me on this but I believe Collins hasn't been sacked the last two games. Hell, I don't think he was sacked in the Bears game after Campbell went out. Receivers are healthy o-line is blocking great I love Collins but I can't say Campbell couldn't do this either.
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
campbell is still learning. once collins got in, saunders started calling all kinds of deep plays for some reason... seeing as how that's campbell's strength, it seems odd they didn't give him more of the playbook to work with.
we're really not any healthier now, except for portis and moss (and heyer has gotten better). |

Re: Was Campbell really ready?
I think our expectations of JC are waayyy out of wack. Compare him to Jay Cutler, I'll take Campbell even though Madden and everyone else seems to fawn over Cutler. Romo developed in the old school way, sitting behind a veteran for four years and then getting a chance to start. So he's seen more and has a better handle of what it takes to be successful at qb. Jason will be fine, especially once he sees how Collins is handling the offense. I think it'll do wonders for his development, his confidence and his ability to handle the questions.
But to answer the question of this post, he was as ready as he would be. In most of our losses Jason Campbell was not the issue. He's been a problem in a couple of games, but for the most part his play has been a positive. |

Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Collins is playing well obviously, but he might be getting a bit too much credit for the team's success. Look at all of the deep throws to Moss, they weren't great passes as much as great catches by Moss. And as someone mentioned earlier, the O line has been giving him time. I think the latter is actually simply due to them keeping the backs in to block. They left JC alone back there a lot.

And even the games when Jason wasn't doing all that great, he still gave us a chance to win the game down the line. I'll take Jason over all the QBs drafted in his class. I'll go a step further, I'll even take him over Eli Manning. But to be clear, Jason is never going to be the type of quarterback that Todd Collins is right now. Meaning that, the things that Todd does best, Jason will pick up on and add to his skill set, but he probably won't do them as well as Todd Collins. I do think in time, a very short period of time, he'll improve on his deficiencies. |

JC could have went 8-25 against the Giants Im sure. I like Campbell this year..besides a few late game interceptions he was becoming more solid as the year progressed. What hurt him was the fact that in games that we had a lead at the half we came out conservative in the 2nd half of games which doesnt make playing with a rythym easy bc we were running the ball 3 times and out quite a bit. Collins has had more freedom to air it out than JC...Collins knowledge of the system definately helps.. Its a very tough decision on who to play If Campbell gets back to 100%..glad i dont have to make the call! You gotta belive in Gibbs down the stretch this year.. When he went for it 4th and inches on the goaline and we got stuffed in the 1st qtr last sun...I was still fired up because they showed him before the 4th down play and u can see the intensity as he screamed "go for it!!".. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
JC is the future, without reservation.
Todd, however is doing great. Not only is a good game manager, he DOES NOT make catastrophic mistakes, and keeps the team in positiion to make a play. He has good touch putting the ball in tight spots. He waits for the play to develope, rather than go for the check down if nothing immediately is available. I could not ask for more I would say he is playing at or above his actual expectation. JC has far superior physical skills. He has pushed the envelope, and way to much tried to force the play, where nothing exists. To often has he tried to play Brett Favre, and killed a critical drive with a catastrophic error that doomed us. I would say he is playing signifigantly below expectation I totally expect JC to benefit greatly from watching Todd. You stay with who got you to the dance! |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
This is year 3 for Campbell, so it was time to take the plastic off and let the kid get some experience. He had some outstanding moments such as the pass to Cooley before halftime in Philly where he played with poise. Those better moments were balanced by critical turnovers in other games, which happens with younger quarterbacks.
Collins getting in may prove a blessing for Campbell in the long run. It will instill a belief that with greater understanding of the system, and quicker decisions, this offense can work great with the personnel we have today. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Soup, one thing we know for sure now...whether it's Collins or Campbell....this system works.
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
The main issues with Campbell is quite simple....turnovers, especially fumbles.
Deep interceptions are understandable...they stretch the "d" and sometimes are as good as a punt....but those fumbles....and 4th quarter interceptions too....ugh. Other than that, Campbell is quite good. Collins is clearly quicker with his decisions and I swear he sometimes only has a 2 step drop....Campbell is much slower on quick passes. I worry about Collin's quick slants to Caldwell....the Cowboys will certainly try to jump those routes for a pick. It is true that the Skins are keeping more blockers in for protection for Collins due to his immobility...but he still knows where to throw the ball with only a couple options....his timing with the RB releasing late seems to be much better than Campbell. In either case, Collins is playing great and needs to continue as far as he can take the team this year. Next year it is Campbell. To be honest, seeing a perineal backup do you job better is a huge motivator, especially since he is the playbook mentor and supposedly has half of the talent. Collins has been mentoring Campbell on the playbook...but how much weight does he give that guy unless he actually sees him do it better? Well....now he has... Campbell will be MUCH better when he gets back...timing for his injury is probably a huge benefit to his development. Study up Jason, you have some work to do... And...not to put the panic in anyone, but Collins will be a free agent from what I understand. We desperately need to resign this guy for 2 more years |

Collins is definitely on peoples radar right now. He's going to have a hard time turning down a big 2 year contract to return as a second stringer at best. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Of course Campbell was ready to play this year, but for some reason people seem to forget he's still a young QB going through his share of growing pains. Collins is a vet who knows this offense inside and out so obviously there's going to be a big difference in the way they run the offense.
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Collins is old and who knows how he would have held up if we started him from day one. He has played some great football and has shown us why Sanders wanted to bring him here as a back up. Learning his system is tough and having a back up QB that knows the system made it so we only had to worry about the starter learning the system which Collins helped to do. I thinking your reading too much into to Collins performance the past 2 1/2 games and we cannot build around a 37 (?) year old QB. If we did we would have set this team back another year of progress. If JC started this year or we waited until 08 at some point he has to start. We saw what happened in Dallas when they turned to a 37 something QB. He started the year pretty good but it went down hill as the playing took its toll on an older QB. Not all 37 year old QB's can be Brett Farve.
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
The only drawback I think Collins has, is the way he seems to snap the ball, and stare at one WR/TE until he's open. He's got a really accurate arm, I just wish he has more playing time under his belt so he can get more comfortable and check all his receivers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing on him. I'm driving the Collins band-wagon. He's our guy right now.
|
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Collins isn't our QB for the future, he is the teacher for JC. Collins is a great pick up and has proven he can be a starter, but I feel more comfortable with him teaching campbell, then relying on him for the next 10 years. Although, Collins is this years MVP in my eyes, he has stepped up tremendously, and you have to give him credit for being able to manage the game and let the rest of the team do their jobs.

Re: Was Campbell really ready?
There's also a huge difference in playcalling.
I wish Saunders would just open up the playbook for Campbell like he's done for Collins and let Campbell figure it out. Like someone mentioned, his strength is the deep ball. As simply a pure passer I haven't seen anything spectacular from Collins like some of the gorgeous deep throws from Campbell. I can't figure out why, but the receivers all of a sudden seem much more open for Collins and the line protection seems better. I don't see how that's a product of having a different/new/better QB in there as much as it's a scheme thing. |

Its amazing how much faster this O is moving with TC than JC. I am 100% convinced that had JC remained the QB the skins would not be in the position they are in now. TC has given this O the quick decision making and fast release it need to succeed. |

This offense is based on timing and the QB throwing to spots, sometimes before a WR even makes his break. That's something that comes with time and experience. Campbell just isn't there yet.
You're absolutely correct Matty! This is my take on Jason Campbell. The guy knows the plays and knows the offense. Campbell is smart enough and good enough to make big plays right now with his raw talent and his athleticism. He knows enough about the plays to know to scan the field and to hopefully throw to the open receiver. The biggest thing that is missing with Jason Campbell's play right now which really makes this offense run like a well oiled machine is the timing. Collins knows the offense and has the timing down pat. This is why suddenly receivers seem open on every play (although that could just be because a veteran QB is able to see the field better than Campbell,) and of course Collins is probably also throwing an easier, catchable pass than what Campbell throws (Campbell can really put some mustard on his passes ala Doug Williams and Brett Favre.) Once Campbell gets the timing down pat and continues to develop his touch pass more, wow...watch out for this guy! That stuff takes awhile to develop. Even though we all were ripping the stuffing out of our lazy boy recliners' arm rests when Campbell went down with an injury, it's been a blessing in disguise that Collins has come in and has played as well as he has. This is what Jason needs to be seeing. The offense being run exactly the way it's supposed to be executed. This will help Jason quite a bit going into the next year. However, to answer the question as to if Gibbs should've waited on putting Campbell in, the answer is no. Campbell came in because he was essentially ready. Maybe not ready in every since of the word when it comes to running this particular offense (timing issues,) but enough to run well enough to move the ball. Campbell will be the starter next season no matter what happens this season. |

Exactly. But Collins has made some nice plays. He threw a nice corner route to Moss that was just perfect. But the play I come back to was against the Bears. The pass to Betts. JC just doesn't make that play yet. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
If Campbell can't win games consistently he most certainly isn't ready. He better get his shit together otherwise the fate of a career backup awaits him.

only fault that i see with collins is he does stare down the reciever on slant routes..if i was a defender i'd be all over that

If you were a defender, we'd score more touchdowns. jk

Slants, I don't have problem with cause it's really to fast of a play for any defender to do anything. It's on long passes where it becomes an issue and it hasn't been an issue so far. I will give him credit though, he really stared down Moss last week against the Giants to clear the safety and then threw a bomb to a wide open Cooley. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Difficult question to answer. I don't think it is a definite yes or no answer. Yes, it was time for him to start. But also Collins has been better for the team the past few games. Would Collins have also done as well as Campbell in the beginning of season? My answer would be - no. See it's complex all the way around.

Re: Was Campbell really ready?
There's just a few things that Jason Campbell needs to work on:
(1) Quick release - as Matty and some others have alluded to. Someone needs to work with him to shorten his motion on the short to intermediate passes. I don't know if any qb has been able to change his throwing motion, but it may be necessary. (2) Situational plays - 3rd and 5 at the goalline with 10 secs left, down by 4 with no timeouts left. What are your options and what do you do with 1 second to make the decision? Again someone needs to work with him on this in practice. Just like flash cards in elementary school. (3) Buy into Saunders's scheme and playcalling - this is just an observational opinion, based on how he plays in the no-huddle and how he plays with Saunders(gibbs occassionally) calling the plays. To have the whole team playing at its best, Campbell needs to buy into Saunders's scheme. Note that I said whole team - because the offense needs to lead this team and the qb always leads the offense. Gone are the days that defense wins championships - which in itself is a whole discussion. But anyways, Campbell must buy into, better yet, invest his whole life savings into what Saunders is pitching to him. |
Re: Was Campbell really ready?
Yes. He's looked very promising, if inconsistent, in his first 20 or so starts. His inconsistency is to be expected. It was time to give him real game experience.

The issue is his overall inexperience as a NFL QB and his inexperience in this offense. As he gets more reps his decision making ability should improve and that's the real key for him. Collins doesn't have a Marino-like release, he just makes quick decisions. |
