Tim Hasselbeck needs to start for this team
 

Tim Hasselbeck provides the spark we need on offense. He has special talents and he is the guy who will be leading this team before very long in my opinion. With the sad loss of Jon Jansen for the season, we will need a mobile quarterback who can get outside on planned rollouts and scramble when necessary to avoid the rush.

Mark Brunell I think is someone who will be able to play at a high level, and I think he would be a very fine starter. But does he provide the spark of Tim Hasselbeck? That remains to be seen.

Patrick Ramsey looks lost out there. He has a tendency to take too long to make decisions, and that is something that I don't know he will be able to overcome easily or soon. I hope he will, but right now, as Madden said, he does not look comfortable leading the team. Probably he will be a very good quarterback at some time, but I wonder if it will be on another team where he can get a fresh start. It is true this would seem to be perfect circumstances with him, but somehow I think the sea change that has occurred on our team this year has left him unsure of himself.

Hasselbeck is the guy right now, and I think he is a Pro Bowl talent.

Relax bro.....it's only the first preseason game. He was very impressive, but we still have a LONG way to go.

EAAAAAAAAAASYY Shane. He defintley outplayed Ramsey and Brunell tonight, but its the first game of the preseason. I think he should defintley be looked at, but theres no way he should defintley start for this team.

Yeah, give him the look though. He was playing against the 3rd string D, but made some awesomely timed throws. Hey, you know what they say, it runs in the family...

If you had put Brunell or Ramsey back there for mop up work, you don't think they would have looked better than Hasselbeck?

I like Tim, but I don't think he is talented enough to lead a NFL team, at least not to a playoff spot.

He did this against the third string D. Good point Matty with the Wuerfel thing. He's a backup at best.

Nice to see Tim play well, but this is basically a scrimage for the skins, and Tim was up against the third stringers.

But I was disapoitned in Ramsey's play. He got a good chunk of time, and never got comfortable.

Still, it's Brunell, Ramsey, and Hasselbeck, unless something chages radically in the next month.

It's way too early to judge this team or it's players yet.

Hasselbeck does need to show what he can do with the starting team, but with a better supporting cast I think he may play better. Time will tell. I do think his skills are excellent and with Gibbs and company there to teach him, he will only get better. He provides a spark. He is an exciting player, to me. You need your quarterback to be someone who will make things happen.

I'm a Hasselbeck believer right now. I like what I saw from him last year and I thought he was our best quarterback then, especially in light of the pass protection schemes and Ramsey's indecisiveness. We needed a scrambler then. We may need one this year as well.

Hasselbeck is someone you will see in the Pro Bowl at some point. Andy Reid thought very highly of him. Joe Gibbs is making comments.

I'm glad he is a Redskin.

First off as many have elaborated on already, this is the first preseason game. You better believe that Brunell and Ramsey will get much much better than what we saw tonight as the preseason runs it's course. They have too because there both fighting over the starting QB position. I believe that Brunell will win it out easily. The main purpose of the first couple of preseason games is to evaluate the rookies and second and third string players. Gibbs will make all the non believers see why he signed Brunell by week 3 in the preseason. :lol:

I'm a believer in Mark Brunell too, actually. I'm not sure that he is the best quarterback for this team right now. Time will tell.

Our offense hasn't looked good yet in training camp. It is still early, that is true. But it's not too early to look at who is providing the fire and spark right now.

I do think that Patrick Ramsey has too many things he needs to work out to develop himself into a top quarterback. His indecisiveness is a major problem. I think he worries about making mistakes, looking like he did against New Orleans in his second game.

My second concern with him is what John Madden observed - he doesn't look comfortable running this team. It's early, but is he going to suddenly find all this fire and spark and start being decisive before the end of preseason?

Time will tell.

Ramsey has a lot of talent - all three of our top quarterbacks do. I think that it will come down to Brunell and Hasselbeck, however, for this season. My money is on Tim to start before the end of the season.

I think it is this indecisivness we started to see way back in the season opener against the Jets where he really strugled in the second half after fumbling following a sack which is why we gave up so much for Brunell. Ramsey has skills but he needs more than anything to belive in himself that has to be the key.

I rember some of the comments about TH when he came in here last year that TH cameinto the huddle two weeks after joining the team and really felt like he owned the team. He has the confidence to lead the team and make decisions and live with them which unfortunatly Ramsey at this point doesn't.

tim has always been good, but last year when he started, it was a NOTICEABLE drop off from ramsey. His play against a 3rd string defense is meaningless. If gibbs starts him 1st string in one of the pre season games (which he might) and he can prove himself there, then such statements would seem better founded. What you saw is that tim is really a solid 2nd string QB stuck with a 3rd string job in washington. He is probably the best 3rd QB in the league, but that DOES NOT get him an invite into the pro bowl, or even on the field... he'll have to prove himself against real 1st stringers AND get on the field before I'd even bother thinking about his pro bowl aspirations.

This was the FIRST [B]pre-season[/B] game.

I am beginning to wonder how musch of last year was Spurriers system and how much was Patrick Ramsey holding on to the ball too long? How bout that bum Sean Taylor? Who is Gari Scott looks like one of the posse to me. Defense soft up the middle. O-line looked pretty good. Defense got penetration. I think we will be much improved. Hail to the Redskins, and yes Tim Hasselback was playing third stringers with and against third stringers but he outplayed Ramsey he looked horrible we should have gotten that first round pick, but atleast he got a couple years to unlearn what Spurrier taught him.

My point is TH was playing against 3rd stringers and guys who won't even make the Broncos team. So let's relax a little bit before we elevate TH to starter status and reserve a plane ticket for him to Hawaii.

TH is a solid backup, don't get me wrong I really like him. He came in last year and played very well under the circumstances. That being said the reality of it is he's an average QB with an average arm. He's a solid #2 or #3 guy.

I'll probably say it over and over this week, with the preseason you can't get too high or too low.

Brunell and Ramsey both struggled, but I honestly expected that. If you expected the offense to come out and light things up your expectation level was unreasonable.

But the Broncos looked good on offense you may say. [i]Of course they did[/i], Shanahan has been with that team for years now, it's an established and successful system and alot of their players know it inside and out. They also don't have the roster turnover we have. Gibbs and company have been in training camp for [u]a week.[/u]

Ramsey has some technical difficulties that last year I attributed to Spurrier, that maybe I need to re-evaluate. Yes, he's been in training camp for one week. But he's been a QB for 2 seasons and still moves like a ice wagon and spends too much time deciding where to throw the ball. Fumbles, overthrown passes and the good 3 and out is reflective of last years season. If Ramsey and Brunell doesn't improve in there performances this saturday against Carolina, Hasselbeck will be asked to start in the next preseason against a first string team. I'm convinced this team must have a spirited leader in the QB position. Not just someone who has a rifle arm. What good is the arm if you're overthrowing the ball ?

OK now we are at what if: If and when TH starts and proves that he can play a role of back up or starter, I could see us trading Ramsey for a tackle. As much as I hate to see Ramsey go I think we would have to fill the need and I dont think we could trade Brunell as easy as Ramsey. But hopefully we wont have to worry about Ramsey not playing well. It was the only the first pre-season game. We dont have to worry about it for a week or so.

Did you see the Dallas game he started last year? With the first team, he completed more passes to Terrence Newman (who is not a Redskin by the way) than to anybody else. Horrific performance, and maybe he did bounce back and play decently later on, but in the biggest game of our year he flat out stunk.

And I agree with Matt, Wuerffel looked awesome in the preseason against the third stringers. But there's a reason he's #3 on the depth chart. He better make sure to stay ahead of Hamdan.

Hasslebeck lit it up against 3rd stringers. Brunell was working against the first string.

I was concerned about how Brunell and Ramsey looked but I think they will improve as the preseason progresses. Remember, Denvers got a pretty damn good D, especially with Lynch and Bailey.

Aside from our run-D at times, I thought our D played pretty decently.

Say whatever you want he played decently last year, and played well again last night he should get a chance to start a preseason game with the starters against another teams starters to see what he can do. I am not saying he is a viable starter but you wont know until he plays with and against starters.

I am not jumping a gun, just pointing out that he has played well, he did well last year heck nearly half of our whoping 5 wins came under him. He has earned a atleast a honest look. I know in the end brunell and ramsey will be the guys, but it would be unfair in this "open" quarterback competition to not give hasselback his shot.

Who says Gibbs won't give TH a fair shot? Gibbs has had nothing but praise for TH so far.

I just don't think TH starting is realistic, but hey, that's just my opinion.

Well said, Matty. 100% on target!! TH is getting plenty of reps. Ramsey and Brunell WILL come around. And in the extremely unlikely scenario that they are unable to grasp the new system or get the rust off, TH is being taught, and will get a shot. That is a few weeks away, and several thousand miles from likely.

You know, Scott looked pretty damn good at WR too. Coles job could be in jeopardy!

TH can be a spot starter, he may even be a star one day who knows. But IMO he's just not as good as Brunell or Ramsey. And he did have the luxury of throwing to McCants (our 3rd or 4th wideout) vs. 3rd stringers, I'd say McCants would have the advantage there.

I'm sure TH will get a shot, and I know the top two guys looked rough, but don't forget that Brunell is ranked 11th in all time qb rating. He'll get it together, lest we forget that Gibbs himself chose Brunell. In the end, whoever plays the best will win the job. If TH is that guy and Gibbs chooses him, then we'll all be behind him. But let's let Brunell and Ramsey get a chance to get comfortable, it's a new system, a new coaching staff, and a new season.

Offense is always behind the defense, so I'm unconcerned. We've got four more preseason games to go, so there's plenty of time to find out if TH should be in the mix for the starting job. Right now I'd say heck no, but that's just me.

I'm also thinking Coleman over LaVar, he's already got more sacks than LA. And Killings should also get a chance at d-tackle.

It is real easy to sit back and poke fun at someone for making a honest evaulation by mocking them with ridicoulous comments such as the ones above. I really thought this site was for people to discuss there feelings on the redskins but how can you state a honest opinion without being ridiculed. If someone does not agree that is fine, but to tear down someone else to prove a point that is real mature. I am not normally a person who stoops this kinda of petty level but, I really hope you guys get those jobs as redskins talent scouts because you all do such a great job evaluatin players on here, because I am sure Gibbs is knocking your doors down.

I am okay it really did not offend me just kinda made me a mad a little that anyone has the right to ridicule anyone here. I have recomended a lot of fellow redskins fans here in SW Va. to this site because I really thought it was different, but a friend of mine (who i told to come here) was ridiculed the same way back in march, he has not posted since, and I had not posted in a while either, I felt bad for telling him to come here because i truley beleived this is not what this site was about. I thought We could talk about football and the redskins, but I know a few of us have been upset with some of the comments and how quickly people will just attack another redskin fan and how quickly people rip the skins and everything about them when something goes wrong. We are all here for the same purpose to enjoy ourselves and talk about football, but it is kinda hard to enjoy yourself if you get ripped apart for making a simple statement. I love football absolutely love it, I have played over 17 years and now am currently coaching little kids the game. I love to talk about football, and analyzing differnt things about the game. I enjoyed reading what everyone rights about different things, and the different views even if they were different then mine, and trust me there has and will be alot of opinions that waver from mine. But to poke fun at someone for making a of the wall comment, come on now. I have no idea who posted this thread, it was not me, I never said hassleback should be listed as the starter but for one preaseason game I beleive he should be espcially if he keeps playing decent. The coaches said it themselves it is a "OPEN" competition, so let it be that way.

I was not offended Matty just sticking up for someone who I beleive was made fun of for no other reason than analyzing the game his way and to me that is wrong. It is okay to disagree.

I also did not intend to upset anyone. It's just that since the game started last evening, there have been a TON of absolutely ridiculous posts that are the result of overreaction. And when they were pointed out, more of the same posts were made. Sometimes it takes a little more of a shake to bring some folks into the world of reality. I'm sure some of these guys have never paid this much attention to the early preseason, or they would not make those posts. The comparisons that were made, it seems to me, should help bring them down to earth. It may even keep them from getting MORE embarrassed by making those kind of statements in a live group...

tired of making excuses for Ramsey. He did not look professional at all, remember the first Dallas game when tim gave us a spark of life and then Ramsey came in and completed the TD to Taylor Jacobs. Ramsey i am now having doubts. So what Tim had backups to play against i want what ever player is gonna help the Redskins. Why do people make up so many excuses for Ramsey but want to trade GArdner? Portis didnt do as well as Mccollough but Portis is a proven winner Whats Ramseys win -loss record as a stater? nuff said. No more blaming Spurrier. Ramsey holds on to the ball too long. With the new rule changes Spurriers offense may have worked? you cant hold and get away with it anymore. Maybe it was just Ramsey?

I think for the most part this site does a good job of not ridiculing other's opinions, and on the rare occassion that someone does make fun of another it's done pretty tongue-in-cheek. The difference of opinions is what makes this site great. All of us love the Redskins and many of us probably joined this site thinking we knew more about the Redskins and football than we really do. Everyone challenging each other and presenting counter opinions keeps our egos in check and makes us smarter fans. Hopefully at the end of the day when you log off the warpath not only have you had a chance to share your passion for the team but maybe you learned a little something new.

if the system isn't designed around your player's strengths and you don't bring in players appropriate for your system, then its not the players' fault entirely... he chose ramsey, he made the system, he gets his share of the blame.

all i can say if you were offended is i'm sorry, but most forums are about 4000x worse, and maybe some thicker skin is required ;) nothing here is done maliciously. Just saying the idea isn't realistic, we weren't insulting shane etc for having that opinion, but trying to show logic/reasoning flaws.

Seriously though, if for some reason (injuries or some fluke) Tim becomes the starter, I have confidence that he can be a winner under Gibbs. Gibbs knows how to win with a good, but not great QB. That said, I don't think it will come to that.
