Should Gibbs stay or go?

Now that the season is over I kinda was wondering if you guys thought that Coach Gibbs should stay or go? I know it was a rollercoaster season for him with the tragedy of Sean Taylor but still managing to help his team get in the playoffs. He was also took a lot of criticism with the whole calling 2 timeout thing but overall I feel like he did a very good job with his team through all the hard times and I would like to see him come back and try it again next year with the skins. I just wanted to know how you guys felt about it?

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

He's coming back. No doubt. I'm starting to think he won't retire for good until he can lead the Skins to another super bowl. I think I said it awhile ago, Gibbs isn't going to go down as the coach that, "Used to have it". He's here till we see the trophy again.

skinsguy 01-06-2008 03:21 PM

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

He should definitely stay. With all the 'Skins have went through this year, a lesser coach would've folded up and said "next year!"

If the Redskins continue to improve and make it back into the playoffs again next season, I'd be all for a contract extension.

He's got one year left on his deal, he's coming back. I was skeptical a few weeks ago but they finished strong. I want to see him back.

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

I like Gibbs and several individual players as well. People come and go but the organization will remain. That being said I don't care if Homer Simpson is the coach,I just want the Redskins playing good sound consistent football and getting back to the big game.

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

Coach Joe will retire from the sidelines in Feb. '09. After hoisting the Lombardi Trophy he will turn the day to day over to Greg Williams and remain as the Team President. The team is 100 times better off now than when he came back but that isn't enough for him. Call me corny, but I can't see Coach quitting anything without accomplishing what he set out to do.

He should stay, we are a playoff team, we would screw ourselves by letting him go.

Joe will go when Joe's ready to go. Period.

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

He brings much value as a part of the FO but, it would be best for someone else (Greg Williams) to take over as HC, Blache as DC and Saunders as OC with Todd Collins supplanting him a la Jason Garett. We need stability all across the board.

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

Unfortunately Joe will stay. I really thought he would go but when this team went on a run and made the playoffs I knew he would come back. IMO that was the only downside of this great playoff run.

I want the Skins to find a new young and energetic coach instead of going after a "name" like they always do.

Just wait and see what would happen if we lost him again, example, past 15 years, he is a leader and a head coach and the players love him and play for him, period, leave him in place in my opinion.

So, just to be clear, you were hoping the team would crash and burn this year so that Gibbs would leave and then we'd go after some up and comer like Childress (not in the playoffs), Marinelli (not in the playoffs), Payton (not in the playoffs), or Mangini (not in the playoffs)

But really I just want to be sure I understand this, you-a Redskins fan-would have been happier had we not made the playoffs? You were rooting for us to lose so that Gibbs would be gone?

not at all I just didn't know how you guys felt about him now because i know a lot of people weren't happy with him and hoping he would leave just not that long ago (bout the time he called those 2 timeouts). Now that he has turned it around and got into the playoffs i thought some might have a different opinion and hope that he stays just like i do. If you look back at the threads there's a lot of skins fans hoping he would retire not too long ago so like i said i just wanted to know what you guys think now after the season is over....

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

Coach should stay til the duration of his contract and bow out, hopefully a winner. I hope he stays longer as long as he can get the team going. To be honest I question if he can. Sure he got us hot in December as usual, but was that mostly on the emotion of the ST tragedy or not? We got our asses handed to us yesterday in the last 12 minutes of the game after staging a temporary comeback. Also, we have to honestly evaluate the entire season. WE had some great moments throughout the season, but with the exception of December, came up short most of the time. Some of the early wins were sort of ugly also. We have a good team, but their execution was rather lacking on the offensive side of the ball. Not sure if coach can correct that. All I know is we need to draft some good O linemen. Also we might need to look at another qb if we dump Brunell.

He has a valid point. Even if Coach stays longer, it can't be for more than 2 years I would imagine. We do need new blood, Coach isn't getting any younger, neither are his assistants.

In the context of the entire season, wouldn't you say now that he did a great job all year (minus the TO vs Bills but w/ Sean's funeral looming the next day I still say cut some slack for that one). The Pats game was the only game we didn't have a shot of winning in the final minutes. And seeing how the teams that we played finished the year maybe we as fans were too hard on Coach. We had the second toughest schedule in the NFL and still made the playoffs.

I would definitely say he did a good job and I hope he comes back. I'm excited to see what he can do next year. I really thought you were going to the NFC championship game and i was rooting for you. I think you're right about fans being hard on him but i'm sure it was kinda hard not to be disapointed with him after that t/o thing but i just hope he has a great year next year and my Christmas wish would be to see Brett Favre go out on top this year and Joe Gibbs to go out on top next year.

Well, maybe we'll get lucky enough to have a bad season next year so that we can clean house, get a #1 draft pick for '09 and start the never ending rebuilding process that we've been in since '93. Sounds like a great plan to me.

He needs to continue on the good things he started, he is also helping to rebuild the face of our franchise with qualities players and personal. IMO

skinsfan0201 01-06-2008 07:31 PM

By the way it should not be a question and the question in my opinion is an insult. I am and most everyone is proud of the direction he is leading this team and the organization.

I really did think this team was going to crash & burn after Gibbs gaffe vs Buffalo (I was wrong) but TC came in and suddenly injected life in an otherwise dead team and the rest is history. I knew after the ST murder that Gibbs would be back but since Gibbs is gone after next year anyway I thought it would be better to get the precess going now instead of later. No doubt making the playoff is better than not but IMO this team made the playoffs in spite of Gibbs not because of him.

You forgot to mention Tomlin who did make the playoffs. The coaches you name all coached bad teams. If the Skins are half as good as most on this board think a young coach would have no problem guiding this talent-filled organization to the playoffs. I have no doubt this organization will hire a "name" coach as this is what the orgfanization & fans demand.

I would venture to say you're in the vast minority when you say they made the playoffs in spite of Gibbs. (Although some will take your post and call it the norm on this site).

I'd also venture to say that no amount of discussion will convince you otherwise.

The majority of us want him to stay. You will find a minority who want him gone, because they feel a younger coach is the way to go. Of course, most of those are probably the younger fans who were not around during the first tenure of Gibbs, or either the old folkies who were around long before Gibbs showed up in Washington. Make no mistake, Joe Gibbs is and will always be a Washington Redskin.

As a H.S. coach, you hate to see a coach whose style you admire make critical mental mistakes, but it is how they respond afterward that shows their true mark on the team. Considering what the "experts" predicted out of this team and what the Skins were actually able to accomplish is because of the coaching. I get sick and tired of people talking how the come back coaches can't deal with the new NFL. Gibbs is showing he can adjust to the new NFL. That being said, when it is time to bring in a new coach, whether it be Williams or a young coach, I hope they will have the ability to put the coaching staff together that fits their system

I'm hoping that Jason Campbell eliminates any doubt of a QB controversy with great play from day one next year.

Are you really fucking serious? Or are you just trying to be some little annoying 12 year old? Im being serious, are you trying to be sarcastic or not? If your not, then brother you need to get your head from out of your ass, and hurry up about it. Do you really, truly, actually believe that this team did what they did WITHOUT leadership, from the only man, probaly in the entire NFL, that could have guided and lead this team thru such tradgedy? Are you really, truly, actually suggesting a younger, fiery kind of whipper snapper that you prefer would have been able to do anything slightly resembling what Coach Gibbs did? I think that is the stupidist thing Ive heard so far this year, and what sucks is its only the 7th. I usually dont respond to such horse shit as this, and you can call it your opinon, its still horseshit, but I just couldnt 'step away from the computer' on this one.
