Democratic Debate
Anyone catch the Democratic debate held in South Carolina?
As an independent... I was appalled by Hilary. I thought she was all rhetoric, and no substance tonight. Obama and Edwards looked strong... Thoughts? |

Thoughts?
I haven't watched it but my grandmother, whos damn near 90 (Think, old Black, country lady. Shes from South Carolina), says she'd rather vote a Republican into the White House than Hilary Clinton. (She supports Obama, followed by John Edwards) She says Hilary's fake. For whatever reasons. And that her main goal is to bash Obama as subtlety or sometimes overtly as possible. And she says she's absolutely appalled at how Bill Clinton has been acting since Hilary's campaign run. She had both their pictures in our basement, needless to say, they've been taken down now. How do people feel about Hilary's campaign? She's obviously appealing to someone, I'm almost a little afraid that the Obama train might be slowing down... |
Re: Democratic Debate
I just got back from S.C. and caught the last hour or so.
I thought it was the most lively of all the debates I've ever seen. The attacks and exchanges were very personal. It's hard to say who won, but I do think Obama did really well and Edwards helped himself too. Although I don't think it will make much of a difference for Edwards in S.C. One thing is for sure, the contrast between Democrats and Republicans have never been sharper in my opinion. |

I'd rather his votes go towards the front runners. |
Re: Democratic Debate
I think her campaign has a great deal of support behind it, and she'll probably win the primary... she's got the votes.
I still think Obama is going to be the first black president, just not yet. I really was impressed by Edwards tonight... His criticism of lobbyist I thought stole the show... too bad the pundits disagreed. At any rate... I'm still pulling for McCain right now. |

I'll tell you what. I think a lot of conservatives(note: not "Republicans") would completely disagree. To me there isn't much difference at all. They're both full of big government know it alls ready to spend our money as fast as they can as long as they can get votes out of it. |
Re: Democratic Debate
im really surprised that Edwards isn't doing better. he was clearly on top of his game last night. as far as the comparison between the parties, its no contest. the GOP wants to stay in Iraq, the Dem's want us out. its that simple. the GOP wants health care status quo, the Dem's want universal health care. as the republicans stress changing the immigration laws. too me, its a non issue. while i think John McCain would be a viable choice for the white house, he is too old( and a career politician) i think we need change at the top.

Re: Democratic Debate
I think Obama gets elected. No man will vote for hillary, and not even all the women will either.
|
Re: Democratic Debate
McCain is a guy I really like. I'm fairly liberal with my political beliefs, but I go at it from an issue by issue basis. I still love Obama, and I think Edwards very well may come out of this as the Democratic nominee. Clinton and Obama are busy trying to kill each other, and he might come out of it looking like the good guy.
From now leading up to election night is fun to me. Seeing the race, the issues, the backtracking, etc. I really love watching the election night results come in. |

Re: Democratic Debate
I'm just wondering if this country is ready for a black president, or a woman president.
For that reason I'm scared that we could see another republican in office. |
Re: Democratic Debate
I have no problem voting for either but I do not like the two running for office.

Yeah of all the Dems Edwards is certainly the most objectional to me. The stuff I have read about him is actually enlightening. Look up about John kerry's feeling on Edward's and many people will change their views on him. He is a fake in every way. He is a blow hard spouting of rhetoric for votes which isn't all that different from the others except that most of them actually have some iota on belief that they can do what they are saying they can do. Edwards is awful. Very much so. I think he'd lose an election to Bush honestly. Once in a race he'll get skewered because he is pretty transparent with his crap. Can you tell I don't like him? |

Here's the exact transcript from the debate: " EDWARDS: ....I've committed not to have any corporate lobbyists working in my White House on the first day that I'm president. Will you make the same commitment? CLINTON: Well, you know, John, I will make the commitment to have people in the White House who are honest and trustworthy and put the interests of the United States first. But I think... EDWARDS: Is that a no? CLINTON: You know what? I don't know. (LAUGHTER) I don't know, because I'm not in favor of corporate lobbyists, but you keep drawing these artificial distinctions. You take money from people who employ lobbyists, who are married to lobbyists, who are the children of lobbyists. And, you know, at some point this gets really hard to take, because if you are someone like I am, who has withstood the full force of corporate lobbyists, starting with the health insurance companies, and the drug companies, and the oil companies, and everybody that I've taken on for all of these years, you know, I think I'm independent and tough enough to be able to deal with anybody. And that's what I intend to do. (APPLAUSE) EDWARDS: Those people, though -- here's the problem, Hillary. Everybody is listening. They can make their own judgment about this. They don't have to depend on us. When somebody gives you millions and millions of dollars, I think they expect something. I don't think they're doing it for nothing. CLINTON: Well, John, trial lawyers have given you millions and millions of dollars. So... EDWARDS: And what they expect from me is they expect me to stand up for democracy, for the right to jury trial, for the right for little people to be heard in the courtroom. And that is exactly what I stand up for. That is not the same thing. That is not the same thing as corporate lobbyists who are in there every single day lobbying against the interests of middle-class Americans. And I think we need a president who can stand up. We have a difference about this. You're entitled to your view. But we have a real difference about it. CLINTON: No, we don't have a real difference. Where we stand is -- where I stand is for public financing. I'm going to do everything I can to get public financing, to get the money out of American politics. But, you know, Barack has a lot of lobbyists who are leading his campaign here in South Carolina. John has had lobbyists who've been working hard for him all of these years. The point is that you've got to say no. You've got to say no. I felt like Edwards actually made some good points here in regards to Hilary's campaign. I'm not saying Edwards' hands are clean... just that in this particular instance... he managed to call out Hilary on her campaign. |

Edwards is all talk and no substance. He is talking about all these issues and things he wants to tackle if he is president but he didn't do shit when he was a Senator. It's not what you say that matters but what you do and Edwards hasn't done shit when he had a chance. |

I don't think that's an issue...There's always someone that wants to kill you when you're president and Obama is no exception. I mean, you think Bush can walk around freely? |

I think he has a much better chance of that than a White man. Trust me, to some people in the world, they don't see you as Black they just see you as a no good (Insert N word here). |
Re: Democratic Debate
i agree. some of the people in the good old southern part of our country still wave the confederate flag, and have alot of backwards ideas.

Re: Democratic Debate
Umm...I happen to think America is ready for either a woman or a black man. I've spoken to southern whites that will vote for Barack and some men that are leaning toward Hillary. I understand the notion that people might not be ready for this or that, but one thing is for sure people are ready for change regardless of the candidate and regardless of which side of the aisle they're on.
Obviously I don't know any of this for sure because I haven't talked to every American:) But the handful that I have spoken to are leaning toward Hillary or Barack. I get the feeling that Edwards is lining himself up more and more for the VP nod. During his debates, his rhetoric tends to lean more towards Senator Obama's positions on a few issues. With each primary state that passes and the sparse number of delegates Edward's is being awarded, at some point it just becomes a numbers game and he'll have to bow out. But he'll grit his teeth until the last minute and then bow out. Afterward, I would fully expect him to endorse Senator Obama. |
Re: Democratic Debate
I am going to have to agree with DynamiteRave here. I think a Black president would be more hated than Bush is right now. We do have an extremely backwards society.
I feel like some people will simply vote Republican because Obama is Black(if he gets the Democratic Ticket). |

Not really related to the democratic debate, but I didn't feel like starting new thread about it. Fred Thompson has dropped out

EDWARDS: ....I've committed not to have any corporate lobbyists working in my White House on the first day that I'm president. Will you make the same commitment?
Is that even something that he could stop as President. I feel thats one of those thing you say you will do then if elected you try to present a bill which you know will be voted down but then you can say you tried. I know the President cannot present a bill but you get the point. This idea of Obama and people hating him is from people up north watching too much TV about dumb southern hick guys. |

Very true. I'm shocked by the number of conservatives who still consider their interests aligned with the Republican party. The party ideologies shifted 100 years ago - I wonder if there is another shift coming? Of course, I don't see the Dems backing off on gov't-funded programs any time soon, but I could see a new Republican party with a true conservative garner a lot of votes. |
