Please Calm Down:
Hey Folks,
Almost every thread I’ve been reading all I’ve heard is how terrible of an owner Snyder is and how he’s dooming the franchise. Let me start by saying that I do want Greg Williams as our next head coach and I haven’t totally given up hope for that to happen yet. I think Zorn would be a great O coordinator, and I hate the choice of Ryan at DC, and I think Fassel is an awful hire. That said, everyone take a step back and a deep breath and look at this with some sense. First of all, from all accounts Greg Williams has been the difficult one, not Snyder. Williams wants a lot of control over the team and personnel. While I feel coaches should have a slight say in these issues, I think this is a full time position in and of itself to make such decisions. There are even rumors that Williams declined an offer extended to him by Snyder. Perhaps Snyder just doesn’t want to give up that type of power to Williams – this is something that makes sense and I totally understand. Back to Vinny. Everyone was crying for a GM, and was there any doubt that if a GM position opened up Vinny would be the man for it? Snyder loves him, Gibbs seemed to have a good relationship with him, and has he really done that bad of a job? Vinny has been the scapegoat of the franchise since he showed up, however he hasn’t done that poorly. He did okay in San Fran, and we’ve found some great late round gems and we’ve been very accurate with our first round picks, something a lot of teams can’t brag about. There are much worse personnel people in the NFL than Vinny Cerrato. He’s not the best, and he’s not the worst. He’s average, and there’s finally a GM position in our franchise. I think Zorn is a great choice at OC. I was a big fan of Saunders, but I don’t think his offense works well with the type of team we have now. I’d love to see us implement a west coast hybrid offense. With someone who throws the deep ball like Campbell and the burners we have it’s important to go deep from time to time, but the NFL is a passing league now, and short passes can take the place of the running game now. The west coast offense will work well for our team in my opinion. I really don’t like the choices of Fassel and Rex Ryan (especially since we’d have to give up draft picks for Ryan) but I’m sure there’s a reason why these guys are floating to the top. Snyder seems as if he’s been very thorough on this process and there’s so much information missing from us, the fans, that we can’t even begin to make an educated guess about what’s going on behind the scenes. I guess my point is this, we can’t automatically sit here and blame Snyder for everything that happens. Would you be happy if he gave full control to Williams? What are Williams’ demands? Just remember, everything isn’t what it seems from our vantage point. We’re looking for someone to blame for Williams not already being named our head coach – but that blame may itself be on Williams and not Snyder. We don’t know. |

Good points made, good post

Re: Please Calm Down:
If The Danny decided that he couldn't coexist with Gregg Williams, then I'm fine with him looking elsewhere. That said, I think he can do a lot better than Fassel. He could have been bold and gone for Jason Garrett or the Tennessee D-coordinator - young guys that could be your coach for the next 15 seasons. At best, I only see Fassel as a 4-5 year stopgap that will require us to make yet another change in a few short years. A Fassel hiring doesn't smell of long term stability to me.

you're right...it smells of a seat warmer for Cowher |
Re: Please Calm Down:
I certainly agree about Zorn, he will be great for Jason Campbell.

Re: Please Calm Down:
Excellent post. I think at this point it's pretty obvious by the whole 4 interviews thing that GW and The Danny were pretty far apart on what direction to go with the team. I think GW is a relatively difficult guy. Apparently he didn't get a long with a lot of folks in Buffalo, and he buts heads with Vinny and Al.
I think on paper Fassel is a better head coaching candidate than Williams. But better enough to clean house? Not so sure about that. |

History has shown that when a coach is also GM it brings about the conflicting issue of win now versus building for the future and also time constraints and job demands become that much more demanding. If Williams demanded to also have full control on personelle issues I would be against that, but if all Williams was asking for was to bring in a GM like Floyd Reese to take over for Cerrato than I would be quite diappointed if Synder didn't agree because Reese is a well respected GM. One thing that has been said with Vinny being promoted - it now puts the pressure squarely on his shoulders. If the teams makes some huge blunders on things like trades and drafts, there will no longer be the "we made all the decisions together approach". I actually like that the team now has a peaking order to the decision making and we can squarely put blame and praise on front office moves on someones shoulders. |

No more hiding behind personnel "decisions by consensus". I'm not overly confident, but I hope that Vinny proves us wrong and kicks ass in his new position. |
Re: Please Calm Down:
I think you've presented one possible scenario here and I appreciate the thought that went into it. It's a good counter scenario to some of the fears that seem to be in line with the facts we DO have, that a number of folks including myself have.
It's every bit as speculative as the so-called "doom and gloom" scenarios, though, and you could make a pretty convincing argument that Snyder hasn't really earned the benefit of the doubt in these kinds of situations, but ultimately all I care about is the process and the organization is going about this in the right way. |

Daseal, are you sure we would have to give up draft picks to get Ryan? I'm just asking because I have no clue how the "compensation" works. Would it be draft picks or money? He has been director of player personnel for a team that has amassed a 50 - 62 record on his watch. By any objective measure, which you pride yourself on, that's a losing record, and a poor job. |
Re: Please Calm Down:
You make some good points, but...
I'd like for GW to do things his way for the most part b/c Snyders way really hasn't worked. I'm not exactly sure how long Vinny has been in DC... maybe since 2000?? Anyways our record since 2000 is 60-68 by my calc's. I think you're actually giving him a little benefit, he's actually below average as a "personel" guy. In the last 5 years he's 37-43, bordering on bad. So for all the talk about the good things vinny's done (sure he's done some good things as many gm's/personel guys do), our FO is below average. And yes, i was hoping Snyder smartened up and would allow GW to do his thing. Yes i do think we need changes and i was hoping GW's would do it. Not to bring in a coach that may not even be selecting his asst. coaches...don't know that for a fact. |

Jacksonville would love to hire him for its Defensive Coordinator opening, league sources said. Or he could depart Washington with a fat payday, take a year to pull a mini-Cowher and watch his kids play sports, and then size up offers in 2009. Re: Please Calm Down:
gw would be a bad choice for hc thing will fall apart for him!!!!!!!!!! need someone with hc exp!!!!!!!!!
|
Re: Please Calm Down:
sir You make great sense. I had not heard that about Williams. Not that the media would actually tell the whole story. thank you for that information. Williams with that much control would not be favored by me. Not sure what he had in Buffalo, but that he was not successful there. I believe we are still just so emotional over everything last season. Williams would be easy for everyone to accept. Maybe we all need a fresh start. I did notice they took down the black ribbons at Redskin park. Maybe we all need a fresh start and just move on... thank you again

Good point. Say, I hear that Terry Robiskie is available -- he's got head coaching experience. A much better choice than Gregg Williams. |

Re: Please Calm Down:
Look on the brightside, we'd have nothing to talk about if we didn't need a new coach.

Re: Please Calm Down:
Don't think ryan's system will be a good fit with our players. Besides the Raven's still have rights to him and he reportedly is happy with the hiring of Harbaugh. On the compensation note it only applies to HC's and isn't allowed for assistants, but as PFT's Mike Florio points out "nothing prevents the Redskins from simultaneously sending a fourth-round pick to the Ravens for their backup punter". I hope the organization has learned from its prior draft pick trade blunders.
I too believe the hold-up on william's is him wanting to much control. Nice post Zorn seems like a good replacement for Al Saunders and should help develop Campbell. I hear alot of people saying it's not fair to Campbell to have to learn a new system and that Saunders should stay. To me it is apparent that the current system Campbell could do okay in with time, but I don't see anything great. Put him in the west coast system now and get him a reciever able to catch a jump ball already. |
Re: Please Calm Down:
I agree with you 100%...I was listening to "Fans" call into Redskins Radio(John riggins Show)who said that if Williams was not hired they would no longer support the team and others said that Dan Snyder needs to be gone as owner. This is not the actions of a true fan. I think everyone needs to just chill and trust that Snyder and Cerrato know what they are doing and will inform Redskins Nation when it is appropriate. Look at all of the Rumers going on with the speculation about who is the leading canidate. My only concern is if a coach is brought from the outsid that I hope we can keep the majority of the players and I hope that players will agree to restructure their contracts if asked to....This will also help to promote team stability.

Don't you guys realize Danny isn't just trying to be an asshole. Why would be he interview GW 4 times?! Use logic guys. It is all about control, remember Marty? Wanted too much we got rid of him. It seems to be a similar issue in this case. Look across the NFL, very few owners give the coach full reigns as president. We did with Gibbs, but that is it. So don't say Danny is the only asshole owner, not true. Also Danny might not know much but that is why he has a huge staff of others such as Vinny, to help out. As for him being a failures, let's compare him to a real failure such as the Detroit ownership. Even the great Cowboys have won 2 less playoff games than us in the last decade. When mods and other "older" posters are telling people are freaking out, there is good reason. Right now everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Take a deep breath and try to understand things from both sides of the table. |

Re: Please Calm Down:
If the proposed coaching staff were to come to fruition (which doesn't appear likely), there is only one reason for it.
Jim Zorn has worked in an offense with more power running and play action than Al Saunders. Rex Ryan runs an attacking 3-4. Jim Fassel is a guy whose firing would be celebrated, leaving us with a team perfect for... Bill Cowher. |

I dispute that this has been established. Prior to this post (which I think is about as reasonable as a speculation as we've seen, mind you), I haven't seen ANY coverage from WaPo or other outlets that claims this is true. It's all just the opposite -- that Vinny has always had an issue with Gregg and only Joe's presence was able to smooth things over.
Look across the NFL, very few owners give the coach full reigns as president. We did with Gibbs, but that is it. So don't say Danny is the only asshole owner, not true.
Seriously, this is our measuring stick now? "He may be an asshole, but he's not the only one?" I thought we were a premier NFL franchise, one of the classiest in the league. Why are we lowering the bar now?
As for him being a failures, let's compare him to a real failure such as the Detroit ownership. Even the great Cowboys have won 2 less playoff games than us in the last decade.
Again, comparing ourselves to other terrible franchises like Detroit is a terrible idea. Those guys aren't even remotely in our league, or at least they weren't prior to Snyder's ownership of the team. We've regained some of that status during Joe's second term, but I think the outrage you're sensing is people who feel it slipping away the minute Joe left. As for the Cowboys, sure, that's true. They also went to a Super Bowl, and have won the division a couple of times. Let's not turn this into a quest to make stats tell the story we want it to, we both know that right now, today, the Cowboys would be regarded as a much better run organization than the Redskins by the majority of randomly sampled NFL fans.
When mods and other "older" posters are telling people are freaking out, there is good reason. Right now everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Take a deep breath and try to understand things from both sides of the table.
I don't buy this for a second either. Just because the mods are tired of reading "the same old crap every five minutes" doesn't mean the bulk of the sentiment isn't valid. It's not a minority of 10 or 100 posters on this board who are irritated. Even the "mainstream" media coverage is reporting that fan reaction is universally negative on this subject. It's always a good practice to try and consider both sides of a situation before rushing to judgment. That practice shouldn't preclude one from deciding that, ultimate, one of the sides is wrong. |
Re: Please Calm Down:
This hints at the Front Office issue.

Re: Please Calm Down:
But I still don't see the implication that Williams demanded control there, although (again, continuing the theme of speculation) perhaps he identified a lot of potential dysfunction, especially between himself and Cerrato, if he were "just" the head coach and Cerrato were essentially the GM.
Either way, I'm just saying, we haven't seen any reports that publicly and explicitly point the finger at Williams for being difficult in this particular situation. Doesn't mean that hasn't happened, of course. |

Snyder has a track record of butting heads with coachs and doing what he wants. He ran Marty out by doing that. Gibbs finally got complete control, but clearly Snyder wants it back now. If I was interviewing with the skins, frankly id want control or a GM just to protect me from Synder. Atleast Snyder doesnt go to teh sidelines when we are loosing and stare at everyoen like jerry jones does, I almost feel bad for teh cowboys players when he shows up on teh sidelines...(not really) |
Re: Please Calm Down:
I sent this to the John Riggins Show, and well this is how I feel about this whole deal:
"I'm puzzled at why Dan Snyder seems to always make decisions that go against everything that the players, fans, other NFL execs, and the sports media say. In all the bad moves that the Redskins have made (Brandon Lloyd, Adam Archuleta, not hiring a GM, trading away picks for free agents, hiring Saunders to completely overhaul the offense after making the playoffs, and making desparate yet unnecesary moves like the trade for Duckett) there always seemed to be a public opinion by not just fans, but football experts and NFL execs that these were bad ideas. Yes we know that Snyder wants to win, but shouldn't he start to listening to other people besides Vinny Cerrato? Let's look at the last offseason, if the team (and possibly Snyder) would have had their way, they would have traded away the #6 pick for either Dre Bly or Lance Briggs. Fortunately, these teams did not deal these players, otherwise it would have been a typical Snyder move to give away our picks for big time free agents. Fassell may have a better record than Gregg Williams as a coach, but once against Snyder is going against what fans, players, NFL pundits, and even Gibbs himself have recommended: Hire Gregg Williams as the head coach. If Snyder wants to win, he needs to look at other successful teams and take example at what their owners do. And for once, just once, he may want to listen to what the public is saying. I really hope that if Fassell is hired, he works out for the team. But in the end, it is Mr. Snyder that needs to change his controlling ways as an owner. Otherwise, we are looking at 10 or more years of mediocre football. Thanks." |
