West-Coast Offense clarification.
Hey Guys,
I understand the basics of the west coast offense, but I have one big question. From what I've seen from the west coast teams they use a fullback. Is this a big staple in the west coast? If so -- Lorenzo Neal is reportedly going to be released from the Chargers. Can't think of a better fullback than him. I like Sellers, but not sure how I like him in the fullback role. |

Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I disagree purely on a blocking perspective. I love seeing him get some carries and a target in the passing game, but he leaves something to be desired in run blocking.
|
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I think you only have to look as far as Tom Rathman, William Henderson, Mike Alstott, and Lorenzo Neal to see that a quality FB is crucial in the West Coast offense.
Whether Mike Sellars can step up his blocking game has yet to be seen, and while he does catch the ball well, what he does afterwards (leaving his feet) needs to be attended to. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I would welcome Lorenzo Neal in here for our new west coast offensive scheme.

Sellers is one of the better FBs in the league. Neal is a great FB, but while Sellers is here, there's no need to get an other FB. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
Lorenzo Neal is 37 years old. Let me repeat that. Lorenzo Neal will turn 38 this year. DOB 12/27/1970
Stop living in the past people. |

Sellers is one of the better FBs in the league. Neal is a great FB, but while Sellers is here, there's no need to get an other FB.
Lets get serious. Sellers is good but with the exception of the hit he put on Kennoy Kennedy (which he got tackled by him anyways) he goes down to often for his size and he is a sub-par blocker. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
While he's 38, he's still the best fullback in the league...4 time Pro Bowl, 3 time All Pro, all in the last 5 years. And while he may not have many years left, he's still a viable option at FB.

and he is a better candidate than Sellers, no matter how much we like Sellers |

Also while we're at it why don't we talk about how Michael Vick was a pocket passer while Peyton Manning is the leagues best scrambling QB. Is Chris Berman going to have to choke a bitch? JESUS!! I challenge anyone here to survive a hit from Mike Sellers. I suggest a lot of you go back and watch film on the guy and stop relying on Madden ratings to evaluate players, especially after the season. Ok, I feel better now. I still love you guys, but damn. |

Quake you make no sense. He's a very good run blocker, that's the best part of his game. |

Iron Mike Sellers Just got off the phone with Big Mike. As those of you who read this blog often probably already know, if you made me pick a favorite football player on this team - from a pure football standpoint - it would be him. I have no rooting interest in it or anything, but the way this guy puts his neck out for his team and the kind of punishment he dishes out, it's hard to not have a soft spot for him.

Opposing defenses only saw a bruising blocker that made a living paving lanes for tailback Clinton Portis. Sellers however, proved to anyone watching closely that his talents were endless, scoring a touchdown 61.5 percent of the time he touched the ball last year.

At 6-3, 284 lbs. he is a unique mixture of size, muscle, and skill. He is a lethal blocker, able to smash holes through a defensive line. He is good receiver, a large target with great hands. He is a power back, one who tends to run over people rather than around them. For some the image of Mike Sellers is synonymous with that of a madman, one who jaw-jacks to players of opposing teams after crushing them under blocks. To others the image is that of a cagey veteran who can sell a block and then slide out for a touchdown catch in the flat. Still to others, he is a terrorizing runner with the ball, one who can knock them on their rump and keep going.

FB Mike Sellers is a bruising lead blocker at 278 pounds and a reliable weapon when given touches.

Sellers was inactive after injuring his back in practice. Sellers, who twisted his back during drills Wednesday, missed his second game since signing with the Redskins in 2004. Sellers is a staple of the running game as a lead blocker for Clinton Portis, is heavily involved in pass protection and is a short-yardage rusher. His absence was felt when the Redskins failed to convert on fourth and one in the third quarter. Sellers did not accompany the team to Tampa Bay and continues to receive treatment for his back.

Sellers, a Pro Bowl alternate, is a bruising blocker and he had three touchdowns ...

Sellers rejoined Washington in 2004 after playing his first three seasons in the NFL with the Redskins from 1998-2000. In the last two seasons, he has emerged as an offensive threat, both as a blocker and a pass-catcher in red zone situations.
Alright now that we've put the Sellers talk to rest we can get back to talking about the WCO. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
It all depends on the system. Nobody really knows at this point what Zorn will bring to the table in terms of schemes.
Regarding Sellers I think he's a quality FB. I don't see a huge need to replace him. |

But I feel this season is the one where we've got to find his successor. Maybe have someone share some time with him, or fill in for him when he's injured. I think late in the draft... just get a big coach-able body, tailor him to be ready in a year or two. |

He’s also more of a blocking back then a gimmick or receiving back, so he might work out real well under Sellers. Plus they are both about the exact same size. Definitely part of the big reason White and Slaton have become household names is because of him. Plus I think he went to PVI, so he may very well be a skins fan. I think he’s projected to go in the 4th round, but he had a really big run in WVUs bowl so that might of upped him a little bit. Neal is just too old. Someone said that he hung around Chris Henry and other notable WVU alum a little bit and might have some character issues. But who would be better in this league then Mike Sellers to mentor him? Big Mike took the long road to get where he is now because of his character problems when he was younger. Plus if you smoke drugs (weed) and you had the chance to play for the team you grew up watching wouldn’t you change your lifestyle entirely? If not just to keep the chance of getting trader or cut the slimiest possibility. |

He is also getting along in age. Plus, I know you didn't fall down the stairs as a child because your house didn't have stairs, and I doubt very seriously that you're Chinese. |

Sellers is getting kinda old and even though he has bounce around over the years and hasnt had a demanding starting position, he had some injuries last year. But I guess everyone did. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
Sellers just got a new contract at the end of last season. He's an excellent lead blocker for Portis, and should fit in well with the new offense. I don't think we need to replace him, but I'll admit that I was very impressed with Owen Schmidt of WVU. It's a bonus in the WCO if the fullback has decent hands, which Sellers has, giving another outlet for the QB.

Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
Sellers is okay, but we need someone younger and more athletic

Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
Has anybody thought about the possibilities of having both Portis and Betts in the backfield at once?

More athletic? Dude is a 280 pound FB who can run, catch, and block. He can also play the h-back and TE. Not sure what else you could want from a guy. |

He isnt gonna play for too much longer. Yes, Sellers is a good player, but if we can get someone younger and more athletic to be used in the passing game, then why not? Dallas converted a LB, that wasnt gonna make the team. He turned out pretty good. Look at Seattle's FB, remember that TD run that they scored on us in the playoffs, I dont think Sellers breaks that run and takes it to the house. Do you? |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
The only problem with Sellers is he didn't touch the ball often enough.
|
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
Sellers is one of the best fullbacks in the league. This is one of the dumbest threads I've ever seen.

When the line was healthy the season before last he was better able to get to the second level, and the man created holes you could drive a mack truck through. Also, at 32 he is in no way young, but FB's often have some of their best production late in their career. Like Lorenzo Neal for example. It is possible that we could get another 3-5 years of excellent production from Sellers, so Im not sure we even need to start polishing a young replacement just yet. Certainly not one drafted before the 5th round. |

Do you?
you have to expand your brain just a tad... now didnt the seahawks spread our defense out and run a draw/delay play to the fb??? and when did gibbs ever spread the field for sellers?? how do you expect sellers to run for a 20 yard td when he gets the ball on 3rd and 1 and goaline situations? the major issue i had with gibbs was his ability to cram the offense together instead of spreading them out. and when sellers rushed... he had 1 wr and two tights or a xtra tackle in the game with playcalls specifically designed for 2 yard gains by rushing behind samuels and kendall. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I like MS, but I think we can get younger and faster at the position for the future.
|
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I love Sellers on special teams, as a receiver, and as a run blocker. I don't think Sellers is a particularly good pass-blocker however. I've seen Big Mike whiff on far too many occasions.
|
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I definitely believe Mike Sellers is a guy you keep on the team. Yeah, he's probably more suited as a lead blocker, but are we forgetting that Chris Cooley would probably work in the passing situations?
|
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
First of all, I was never saying get rid of Sellers. If anything, I'd want to expand his role to be the anti-Reggie Bush. Try to use him to get mismatches in the passing game and getting the rock from time to time. However, to mention Sellers in the same breath as Lorenzo Neal when it comes to run blocking is ridiculous. Lorenzo Neal goes to the pro bowl every year for a reason, ask LT why he has such huge holes.
There are plenty of reasons to not want Lorenzo Neal. Cap, Age, etc. I understand and never expected the Redskins to make a move for him. While my main question was to the importance of the fullback in the west coast offense, the 2ndary question came about Neal. I really like Sellers, but just don't like him when it comes to blocking. Give him the ball and mismatches all day, but I don't recall many incidents of him clearing out a big hole for Portis. Maybe it was due to scheme, I don't know. |

However when the running game got going near the end of the season a lot of the credit is attributed to Sellers. I also think you can see his impact by watching how much more the running game suffered when Sellers was out. In my opinon there was a huge difference. I really wish you'd reconsider and watch film, though I understand getting your hands on Redskin broadcast isn't exactly practical. The next best thing would be to watch Clinton Portis highlights on YouTube and see how much CP hung onto Sellers during key plays, especially during the course of the Giants game and the early part of the Vikings game (before he ran downfield full speed and gave himself a concussion). Of course he also did that a lot with RT and JJ. Either way I will not stand here and let you bad mouth MY BOY. Lol, caps and Bold type FTW. |
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
I cannot fathom why anyone who has watched Sellers thinks he isn't not only a good blocker but a very good run blocker. In terms of positions that need an upgrade on our team FB is near the bottom. And certainly not with a 38 year old. Sellers is a top 5 FB in the league.
|
Re: West-Coast Offense clarification.
maybe draft a guy like hester (if he grades 4th round or lower) for future use (Sellers is getting old), but in the short term, we'll be alright.
