The reason GW DIDNT want the job
According to someone with very close ties to the organization (and Snyder) Gregg Williams DIDN'T WANT the job with Vinny Cerrato calling the shots. He said he knows this for a fact. People have been chalking it up to Snyder and GW not getting along, or not "fitting" but this isn't true. Our front office structure ran him out of town, just like it kept a number of candidates from considering the job.
Hopefully Zorn works out, but he'll have to win over the lockeroom before anything else. |
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
Who/what is your source?
|
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
I think back to the Lavar situation and last years "mole" in the locker room, probably gave the appearance that GW didn't have as good of control of his team as he would like everyone to think.
|
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
I think most of us figure some variation of this to be the case, but without naming a source this thread really isn't any different than any of the other speculation that has littered this site for the past 4 weeks.

GW is a polarizing guy. For every Fletcher who runs through walls for him, you have a Pierce who can't wait to get away from him and succeed elsewhere to prove him wrong. If your info is true (and I question posts like this with no sources other than a guy I know) then it means that he will probably never get to be a good HC. Only coaches with previous rings and almost universally accepted clout are given final say over personnel. |

"littered" is absolutely accurate. |
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
Oh so now GW didn't want the job, despite interviewing multiple times and saying he wanted the job.
I get it now. |

pierce didn't have any issues with anyone here... until he got let go. now all he can do is talk sh*t constantly. |

Pierce actually liked playing for GW. Not sure where you got that info from. He hates the skins now. Most guys who actually play and perform for GW like him. |

Well thats a strange comment to make, because Pierce came out and said he loves Williams on Comcast and he was stunned that he did not get the job. He also said they still talk on the phone. |
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
I would compromise my source by naming names. He was at Snyder's super bowl party in arizona, at the press conference this past week at redskins park and is very close to a number of people within the organization. You can take the info however you want, just putting it out there.
|
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
Don't get me wrong, he wanted to job very badly just not under the circumstances presented. This is the same reason Cowher, Carrol, Spanolo, and Jim Mora all didn't want to touch this job with a 10 foot pole. Would you want to accept a job where you have nearly zero control and yet are held accountable for everything?
The result: we have a previous QB coach with no head coaching experience in any capacity on his resume, who was going to be passed over for the OC position in seattle when Mora takes over next year anyways. (From JLC's blog). It's great that everyone is excited about this hire (because it isn't fassel) and I hope it works out; but we have to be honest that we resorted to option number 10 on our wish list thanks to our front office structure and hierarchy. |

Well why in the world start a thread that you can't back up with anything other than..."I would compromise my source"? No offense but I take it as another worthless thread. GW was here 4 years waiting in the wings until JG retired and interviewed 3 maybe 4 times of course he wanted the HC job. I guess you did narrow it down to a 100 people or so that nobody knows... |

From all accounts, he loved playing for Williams and quarterbacking our defense. Pierce didn't ask for huge money, which made it even more troubling that he stayed in the division at a bargain rate for one of the best MLB's in the league.

Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
What I don't get is people seem to think Snyder and Cerratto don't want and wouldn't strongly value the opinions of a head coach with regards to any kind of personnel decisions. It's not like they will say to Zorn hey why don't you take the week off during the draft. We got it taken care of. Having a GM with lots of power and an overbearing owner isn't some new concept in the sports world.

How do you know Antonio Pierce wanted to get away? Williams is the coach who helped catapult his career and they had a great working relationship. Pierce not staying was attributed primarily to the front office's undervaluation of him. |

True, I noted in a previous thread recently that if you take a look back at snyder's tenure there has been a progression of sorts w/his coaches. In 01 Marty was given full control but DS didn't like that. So he fired Marty & brought vinny back. He hired spurrier & suddenly we get a bunch of gators. Obviously, Spurrier had a hand in signing them. Then, Gibbs comes back & from all reports & appearances, it seems he had quite an impact on decisions to say the least. Of course Gibbs was also team prez & Snyder's idol, so his situation may be incomparable to anyone else. However, I think snyder has shown some maturity in facilitating the collective minds of his head coaches & vinny, and I expect to see offensive players that meet Zorn's overall approval. The real questions about the GW issue to me are; if JLC is correct in stating that Blache has essentially been guaranteed full authority over defensive personel (whatever that means), was GW not given this same power in their negotiations? Did DS feel he had to give Blache that much power to keep him, even if he refused to do so w/GW? What are the limits of Vinny's power vis a vis Blache? I would imagine he would overide Blache on personel acquisition, but Blache would have full say over who makes the team or gets cut. |

From the same source (who is friends with Snyder)...i called it a week before it was public. http://www.redskinswarpath.com/locker-room/22409-skins-in-hof-game.html Believe me or not, but this is why GW didn't "fit" (Snyder) or "work out" (Gibbs). You guys treat JLC's blog like its the bible; but 75% of everything he reports is from "league sources", "sources close to the situation", "team official who asked not to be identified"...news flash...this is how information disseminates in today's media. |

And "compromising your source"? Are we suddenly dealing with international spies? Is this the CIA or NSA handling football information? It sure would be a dark day if your "source" were uncovered in the field and then tortured for his misdeeds. You are right about JLC, and frankly it's why I don't put a lot of stock in his blog. It's the same for the guys who pick stocks - make dozens and dozens if not hundreds of predictions, when one finally comes true point it out to everyone and hold it up as a shining example of your keen insight, failing to mention the other 99% that turned out to be completely bogus. The bullshit people can spout on the internet with zero accountability is really amazing. |

Didn't Snyder himself hint that the Skins would be playing in the HOF game before it was announced? I mean it wasn't exactly a newsflash when the official announcement was made.

When I saw the DS interview at the Super Bowl I was under the impression that we had no choice but to play the game. I mean orders are orders. However the recent reports on this story have me thinking that Snyder went to Goodell and said something along the lines of hey "Hey Rog, we'd be perfect for this game."' |

VC is not a talent evaluator, he knows nothing of how to really build through the draft, and I think that is probably the wedge that kept GW from taking the job, he probably wanted a say in how we attack the draft, but with Cerrato in there it allows DS to play GM as well, so GW wasnt going to happen, remember that was why Marty was given his walking papers after 1 season, because he wouldn't let Snyder in on personnel decisions. I also remember a quote right after Spurrier was hired, apparently he went up to Snyder to talk to him about the draft and Snyder told him to basically take a hike and just worry about coaching the offense or something to that effect. |
Re: The reason GW DIDNT want the job
I don't know about the rest of you Redskins fans out there but Im more than willing to give Jim Zorn a shot at this thing. I hope he can help to turn us around and get us back to championship status. What do the rest of you all out there think, how many are willing to back him? Also I'm glad it wasn't Fassal that was hired but also I hate to think that my feelings posted on here and on ExtremeSkins cost him a job (which according to Peter King of SI is reason Fassal didn't get the job was because of all of the negative response of us fans in these blogs and live chat rooms).
But I do feel comfortable with Zorn getting the job and I hope he doesn't let us down I he can turn things around. |

I don't agree with the assessment that Pierce wanted to get away from here. I believe it was Williams who said that we didn't necessarily need him and that Pierce used that as motivation to prove that he was a good LB. I guess Pierce 1 and Williams 0 on that assessment. |
