Brandon Flowers
 

I'm pretty sure most of you guys have heard of this guy. I'm a huge Va Tech fan and Brandon is a tremendous CB. I agree totally that a big WR is a huge need for our team, but if we had to draft a CB i like this guy a lot. He is a typical VT corner, very very physical, highly athletic with great closing speed. Ive never seen a CB tackle at the line of scrimmage like this guy can. He left college early unfortunately for us Tech fans, but it be awesome to see him in the a Skins uniform. They had a special on NFL network a few days ago on the top corners in the draft. I was happy when Brandon got some love when he was put at the top corner in the draft. This guy is worth the hype. What is all of your guys opinion on him?

I'm hoping that he stays under the radar at the combine. Early projections have him at 2nd rnd. at best. If he were to be there or to drop to 3rd he would be a steal. He could contribute immediately as a nickel, then start next year.

Underclassmen can be somewhat of a gamble in that they may not be ready for all the challenges they face, but on the upside if you draft one in the 2nd w/that much potential, you're really getting a 1st round guy a year early. If he stayed at VT & remained healthy, he'd definitely be a 1st rounder next year, if not top 10-15 pick.

oh for sure and the Hokies wouldn't have to worry about throwing another freshman out next year to start. Dammit brandon haha he should have been smart like Macho and stay for his senior year.

Yeah I'm a Tech fan as well, and I'm very impressed by him. I'd love to see him in a Skins uniform if he fell to us in the second round, although I wouldn't be too upset if we used our first rounder on him if there weren't any players available that filled a position of need.

he's not bad, but i think cromartie or tracy porter would be better in the 1st or 2nd, respectively.

I agree, however i think Brandon is up there with these guys. He really plays press covrage really, well but also can close when needed, and has amazing hands. But i definetly wouldn't mind cromartie or porter both very good

Yeah, someone else had him 11th overall, but I doubt he will be there in the 2nd. He may go in the first.

I'm a firm believer that these days the key to stoping the pass with secondary alone is decent corners and great saftey play, especially from the FS. Thats why I wouldn't mind taking Kenny Phillips in the first round though I would rather have a DL like Kentwan Blamber or a DE like Campbell taken in the first round. And according to my theory we have what it takes to stop the pass in terms of personel in the secondary.

Right now I'm hoping for a quick DT, LDE, and a Guard in the first three rounds.

yeah i'm surprised by that. I thought he might move up but not that much. It's just Mayock's list though, he's got some picks that are outside the box for sure. He has Mendenhall as the top rb.

Flowers ran 4.58 at the combine. Maybe he'll be available in the 2nd if the Skins go DE or WR in the 1st.

This kid is a stud, hard hitting animal that has an amazing knack for the pall and pre play reads. I think he will become one of the better NFL CB just based on his heart and pure style of play. GREAT CB!

Brandon Flowers just ran a slow 40-yard dash(4.55). To slow for me. I am no longer interested.

I love the 40 yard dash. Thanks to this drill great players fall to the later rounds and overated guys constantly become reach picks. *cough* Matt Jones *cough*

However as I've said before I'm not to crazy about getting a corner. I think that we can be a better team with a rookie DT, LE, and G. Those are three positions (especially G) that can contribute right away, and eventually turn into great palyers.

[B]Strengths:[/B] Plays with confidence, doesn't dwell on mistakes and is comfortable playing on an island. Opens hips smoothly when forced to turn, is fast enough to run with most receivers and does an excellent job of getting head turned around downfield. Plays with a mean streak, flashes a powerful punch and flashes the ability to slow receivers down at the line. Change directions well, shows good burst coming out of breaks and reads routes well. Shows good awareness and can cover a lot of ground when asked to drop into zone coverage. Has quick feet and explodes out of backpedal. Aggressive, has excellent ball skills and is a dangerous open field runner. Isn't very tall but times jumps well, elevates well and flashes the ability to compete for jump balls. Shows good instincts and fills hard when reads run. Takes sound pursuit angles, has sideline-to-sideline range and always seems to be around the ball at the end of the play. Times blitzes well and shows great closing speed coming off the edge. Stays alert and gets hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback.

[B]Weaknesses:[/B] Doesn't have great size and is going to get pushed around at times. Can be overaggressive, is vulnerable to double moves and lacks the second gear to recover when gets caught out of position. At times looks like a sound open field tackler but lunges at ball carriers' feet and fails to wrap up at other times. Fractured right fibula in 2004, injured ankle in Chick fil-A Bowl at the end of the 2006 season, hindered by ankle injury during 2007 spring practices and durability is a concern.

[B]Overall:[/B] Flowers appeared in the first game of his true freshman season in 2004 and actually returned an interception for a touchdown but he fractured his right fibula in that game and the NCAA granted him a medical red-shirt. He appeared in all 12 games of the 2005 season finishing with 20 total tackles including 13 unassisted tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss. Flowers also intercepted a pass that year. He moved into the starting lineup in 2006 and finished with 51 total tackles including 29 unassisted tackles and 7.5 tackles-for-loss. Flowers also recorded 3.5 sacks and intercepted three passes that year. He started all 14 games of the 2007 season finishing with 86 total tackles including 56 unassisted tackles and eight tackles-for-loss. Flowers also intercepted five passes including one he returned for a touchdown and recovered a fumble last year. Flowers is a slightly undersized corner who has had some problems staying healthy so taking him in the first round would be a substantial risk. However, he has excellent man-to-man cover skills and he is a willing run defender so he projects as a second round pick.
