Updating a previous item, Southern California LB Keith Rivers (ankle) will not run at the NFL Scouting Combine because of a sprained ankle. He will bench at the NFL Combine, but will do his running at his Pro Day April 2. He is also represented by Athletes First.

University of Michigan QB Chad Henne said during his NFL Scouting Combine interview that he has talked with the Washington Redskins.

Cowboys | Team talks with Henne
Sat, 23 Feb 2008 00:41:27 -0800

interesting... i think henne is the best value as a NFL QB starter this year, but i didn't think we'd be considering taking a QB with a 2nd round pick (or moving up). probably just due diligence.

That Guy 02-23-2008 11:01 PM

Re: Draft - Combine/Pro Day results, info from KFFL

the Redskins, as of now, have NOT talked to devin thomas (WR), malcolm kelly (WR)

Malcolm Kelly (1st round WR) will NOT workout at the combine.

University of California-Berkley wideout DeSean Jackson proclaimed himself 100 percent healthy at the NFL Scouting Combine. He also said that he had a chance to work legendary NFL receiver Jerry Rice, who Jackson now views as a mentor. Jackson said that Rice stressed the value of off-the-field conduct and relationships most to him. Jackson, by the way, measured in at a mere 5-foot-9, three inches shorter than his billed height by the university.

-Cousins, Oniel 5.11
-Albert, Branden 5.17
-Williams, Chris 5.17
-Giacomini, Breno 5.20
-Cherilus, Gosder 5.21

jake long (OT), and fred davis (TE) did not run.

Dustin Keller destroyed the TE competition as far as combine stats are concerned.

10'11" broad jump (8" better than 2nd place), 4.14 shuttle (best by .05), 38" vertical (best by 2") 4.55 40 (best by .03), 26 bench presses (2nd best, 1 behind the lead), 2nd best in 3 cone (6.88, 6.8 was the lead).

he went to purdue originally as a 185 lbs WR, and came to the combine as a 242 lbs athletic TE.

btw, the NFL is doing a much better job of tracking the draft this year.

glenn dorsey will NOT workout

tom zbikowski came in at 5'11" and 211 lbs (8% body fat). that'll help him.

mcfadden's run times also (obviously) lock him as the #1 RB and a top pick. he's only half as good as peterson though (he has trouble breaking tackles just like reggie bush did, only mcfadden doesn't catch as well. better field vision though).

owen schmitt (blocking FB) did 26 reps on bench press

a guy i'd like in the 7th... 6'6" WR - good blocker/special teamer, had lots of practice blocking for mcfadden over the years.

Re: Draft - Combine/Pro Day results, info from KFFL

combine notes:

DE - gholston and groves showed a lot of speed and good bench numbers, harvey looked solid, and campbell may have dropped himself clear out of the first round by not living up to the hype he was getting (5.03 40, which is okay, but he got a bit oversold pre-combine). long did not disappoint, and merling did not run.

DT - dorsey, of course, is now an injury liability. trevor laws followed a great individual season (100 tackles at DT) with a great senior bowl week and a great combine. he may not even may it to our 2nd round pick now... we'll have to see. ellis had another great showing, but that's expected when you're a top 5 pick.

QB - chad henne has recovered quite a bit from Michigan's terrible year in the senior bowl and combine, and he's still the best value pick at QB. Flacco's arm has helped his stock, and colt brennan looked MUCH improved since his senior bowl flop (Accuracy and weight... he didn't run, but for QBs that's not a big deal).

RB - while mcfadden isn't nearly the bullet proof pick that peterson was, he ran a 4.33 which, combined with his production, makes it impossible not to rate him as the best running back. great values can be had at this position though, with guys like steve slaton and ray rice buried a bit in the depth pool. chris johnson ran a 4.24 by the way, which will get him picked earlier than he should probably go (tatum bell got picked for speed, and, well, it hasn't worked out very well. johnson's a better back though).

WR - james hardy, jordy nelson, devin thomas, and eddie royal all helped themselves by running expected or better than expected times and looking good in drills. kelly didn't really participate, and desean jackson hurt himself by being 3" shorter than expected and weighing under 170 lbs. I still like dexter jackson and marcus monk and value picks and special teamers.

TE - Fred Davis didn't run and didn't really help himself on drills. Tamme can catch well, but dustin keller stole the show with top results in every workout and great drill work. he really helped himself as much as anyone there.

OL - not much to report... long and zuttah looked the best, lots of good talent depth throughout. there are 2 centers (justice, pollack), a few guards, and a million tackles worth drafting this year, but it's hard to pick them out of the crowd right now. jeff otah ran a terrible 5.56 40, but it probably won't kill him due to his production.

LB - ILB - hey look, it's dan connor... and no one else. OLB - a bunch of guys ran 4.9's and killed their stock, ali highsmith being the biggest name. adibi ran a 4.69 when a 4.55 was expected and didn't lift... not good for them. erin henderson (UMD) also ran a bit slow. Rivers is the best LB there, gooden looked like a miami LB, and a guy named shawn crable (6'4" michigan) really helped himself with a 4.6 (@ 245lbs) and 29 reps.

S - kenny phillips (6'2" 212 lbs miami S) ran a 4.54 and did 19 reps (similar to taylor's stats), which is definitely good. he did not jump (taylor got 42" on the vert). A guy for arizona state named josh barrett ran a 4.35 40 at 223 lbs (6'2"), which is a bit crazy, and definitely going to help him (productive in college, but with some injury issues). he probably jumped a long ways up with such a good showing. zbikowski ran a 4.5 and did 24 reps, and also measured in at less than 8% body fat, so his combine was productive.

CB - cromartie helped his stock the most (4.33, 6'2", 38.5" vert) after a great senior bowl. talib, jenkins, mcklevin, porter, godfrey, and king all helped themselves, and the overall times were good across the board.

the skins talked to QB dennis dixon and RB Yvenson Bernard (who ran a 4.8 at 200lbs, ouch). bernard will probably not be drafted. dixon could go in the 4th or 5th, but he's a great value pick (20tds, 4ints, 4.6 40, ran for 580 yards 9tds, 5 fumbles, 2 lost... he's also just had a torn ACL though, and he's a bit light).

That Guy 02-27-2008 04:28 AM

Re: Draft - Combine/Pro Day results, info from KFFL

oh and the short version -

LB - BAD (unless you're keith rivers or dan connor)
CB - GOOD, DEEP, FAST
WR - mixed bag, good luck picking a stud #1. very tall year.
RB - DEEP (johnson is 4.24 fast)
OT - VERY DEEP
OG - some talent
C - justice, pollack
QB - Ryan, followed by a mess of guys (henne and flacco look good)
DT - dorsey - injury issue, ellis - stud, laws - shooting up boards, dre moore - great, balmer - not so great, sims - not well known
DE - gholston - stud, a LOT of starting talent, some of everything (3-4 DE, LB, 4-3 DT/DE, etc)
S - kenny phillips, tom zbikowski, josh barrett (4.35 @ 223lbs = crazy)

That Guy 02-27-2008 04:39 AM

Re: Draft - Combine/Pro Day results, info from KFFL

i like slaton, zbikowski, zuttah, jackson, monk, porter, king, and possibly henne or brennan as value picks.

i think dustin keller, trevor laws, and josh barrett would be the best values, except they're going to get massively reslotted on draft boards. they're worth watching though, just in case...

brennan wasn't lying when he said he was on a weight gain diet or that he was working on his footwork. while it would have served him MUCH, MUCH better to show up more prepared in the first place, his determination and vast improvement show that writing him off so quickly after the senior bowl may have been a mistake... my bad.

campbell looks bad again. porter helped himself. phillips and porter are definitely worth watching (phillips combine 40 time was a 4.50).

the jets are a popular spot for golston in mock drafts... interesting the dolphins are looking at him. I'd assume for a trade down scenario.

Buccaneers | Kiffin impressed with Jenkins
Sun, 9 Mar 2008 18:21:19 -0700

The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said he is impressed with University of South Florida CB Mike Jenkins. "He can play man and he's got great man skills. We always talk about the Tampa 2. But like I said earlier, I can't teach speed. You can't teach a guy who runs a 4.8 (40-yard dash) to run a 4.3. You can work on skills, you can improve on catching the football. . . But the real good ones, they just have the hands," Kiffin said.
combine notes:

DE - gholston and groves showed a lot of speed and good bench numbers, harvey looked solid, and campbell may have dropped himself clear out of the first round by not living up to the hype he was getting (5.03 40, which is okay, but he got a bit oversold pre-combine). long did not disappoint, and merling did not run.

That Guy - I was a fan of drafting C. Cambell because of his height and many comparing him to Ed "To Tall" Jones - but after seeing this I don't know if he is the answer at Defensive end - do you know or anyone else on the Warpath if Campbell participated in the benchpress? If he didn't that would raise a big question mark in my book because if he is not too fast and not too powerful what are his main positives besides height?

Thanks for insight

combine results: (campbell did not lift there, reps aren't mentioned at his pro day either)

i never really wanted to draft him pre-combine either though, but i'm less of a fan now. guys 30lbs lighter were putting up 31 reps left and right, and guys like harvey and merling (one of which might make it to 21) have better production and highlight packages.
